sultry new steakhouse was recently unveiled at The Shops at Crystals at Aria, although you may need to reconsider the image that comes to mind when you read those words, “steakhouse,” because this is SHe by Morton’s. SHe is a boutique steakhouse, and a distinctly female-friendly one at that. Steakhouses don’t tend to cater primarily to women, traditionally, but SHe breathes new life into the steakhouse experience. SHe is a collaboration between the popular chain of upscale Morton’s The Steakhouse

One of the more remarkable elements of SHe is that it’s two restaurants in one. Dining Out in Style Rock Out at Pink Taco

H

ip, fun and feisty are a few words that can describe Pink Taco at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. With a name like “Pink Taco,” you know that they don’t take themselves too seriously. Pink Taco is decorated in folk-art, low rider bicycles, eclectic artifacts and unique tables. Average, boring Mexican restaurant, this is not. Great music pumps loud in the dining room, or for a quieter setting, choose their open patio overlooking the pool. No meal at Pink Taco would be complete without a Margarita, and they have some amazing options. Ever had a Margarita with a tiny bottle of Corona suspended on top so it mixes in as you drink it? You can find one here! Prefer to sweeten your cocktail as you drink it, order their “Rock Hard” and it comes with a rock candy swizzle stick that you can stir as much as you want. They have plenty of other cocktails available, so choose the one that suits your fancy, and start checking out the menu! Now, Jalapeno Poppers have been done before, and some of them are even pretty good. Pink Taco’s version beats them all hands down. They take a jalapeno, stuff it with blended Mexican cheese, then wrap the whole thing in bacon and serve it with smoked Ranch. Yep, you heard it here. Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos – and trust us that you do NOT want to miss out. You can find all of your other favorite appetizers and some new ones on the menu, from Ceviche to Churrasco Skewers or Sweet Corn Fritters. They offer salads and soups as well. Dale Chihuly’s Works of Art From weaving glass in tapestries to being one of the most prolific contemporary glass artists today, Dale Chihuly leaves a beautiful trail through the Las Vegas Valley. His career spans decades and his chosen medium has taken him and his art around the globe. Chihuly has just released his latest book titled, “Chihuly Silvered,” and it is a simply fantastic addition to his catalog of printed work. The book is something of a piece of art in itself, with the artist choosing approximately 125 or so of his favorite pieces to feature. “There are a lot of bright and colorful ones,” said Chihuly, “and there are some that are just white that aren’t so colorful.” The process of “silvering” glass is the same as mirror making. “It’s something I tried and I really liked it, so I’ve been

putting a lot of energy towards silvering pieces,” said Chihuly. He began working with the process after he had studied in Italy under master glass blowers when he was a young artist. “What I like most about glass is that light goes through it,” said Chihuly. “It’s different than any other material in that way…The idea that sunlight or artificial light can go through it is what makes it luminous in a way that no other material is.” Chihuly creates pieces that range in scale from something to fit on a shelf to grandiose installations using materials ranging from glass to ice to even incorporating neon into his work. He creative ideas have taken him all over and his work can be seen in Vegas in the lobby ceiling of the Bellagio, and at his gallery in City Center at Crystals Place.

Twisted Vegas La Bayou Casino: Please Don’t Call It a Dive By Scott Roeben

In downtown Las Vegas, there’s a little hole-in-the-wall slot joint called La Bayou. If you didn’t know better, you might walk right by, on your way to a flashier establishment. But if you want a taste of the real downtown, mixed with a little Sin City history, La Bayou might be worth a stop. It may not be obvious from the looks of the joint, but La Bayou sits on hallowed ground in Las Vegas. The La Bayou site has been around since the earliest days of the city. Originally opened as the Las Vegas Coffee House, it was once the Northern Club, which later became the Turf Club, which later became the Monte Carlo which later became the Coin Castle. That’s right. Don’t call the La Bayou casino a dive. Call it a landmark. In fact, the Northern Club was the very first establishment to get a Nevada gaming license. Now, that’s a pedigree.

At around 3,200 square feet, La Bayou is, well, intimate. It doesn’t have table games or a sports book. It does have about 125 slot machines, the old-school kind, where coins come out rather than slips of paper. La Bayou is a throw-back to the days when gambling involved getting your hands good and grimy, and cashing in buckets of coins meant you’d defied the odds and whipped the house. Aside from the slots, and free Mardi Gras beads, La Bayou’s claim to fame is its daiquiris. They’re some of the best in Las Vegas. La Bayou serves what are called “street stoppers,” which means if you see one of their drinks on the street, you’re likely to ask where it was purchased. There are 26 varieties of daiquiris, so pace yourself. Just a dozen flavors appear on the overhead menu, but combining those flavors results in an even wider variety of ways to spark your brain freeze (a name of one of the flavors, by the way). Brain freezes are actually serious business at La Bayou. Bartender Joy (in the business for 17 years) gave us this advice, “Cup both your hands over your mouth and nose and blow warm air. That’s better than anything I’ve ever tried before.” An XL yard is $18, with refills for $10. A 42-ounce football is $16, $9 for refills. One dollar daiquiris are available from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (one per person per day). Aside from being some of the most flavorful daiquiris in town, they’re also some of the strongest, even without adding additional shots of liquor (although that’s an option). Other diversions at La Bayou include gazing at the array of oddities affixed to the ceiling, including a boat, a piano and a sculpture fashioned from dozens of musical instruments. So, please don’t call La Bayou a dive! Maybe try “an unforgettable Las Vegas experience.”

Mint Martini, Citrus Champagne Cocktail, Lavender Lemontini, Orange Hibiscus She-tini and the Blueberry Red Bull Champagne Cocktail. If you haven’t already been seduced by the entertainment or cocktails, the cuisine is sure to finish the job. Executive Chef Erick Stecher says, "The whole idea behind SHe is to have a female-friendly steakhouse. So, we have quite a few options that are smaller in size, portions for the ladies, as well as catering to men with larger portions. We also have portions which can be shared." The “Sharing” begins with a section of the menu bearing that very name. Appetizers run the gamut, with an emphasis on seafood. Must-try items are the Crab Cake Minis, Crispy Tempura Shrimp and Sea Bass Bites, although it's difficult to single any dishes out. "Our appetizers are definitely meant to cater to our female clientele,” states Chef Stecher. “One of our top sellers is the Shaved Hamachi. We went with light flavors, not too heavy." The Shaved Hamachi (yellowtail fish) is not only delivered with an artwork-like presentation, the flavors (coconut lime dressing, jalapeno and avocado) are exactingly orchestrated, with palate-pleasing results. The Little Big Royales are sliders prepared to perfection, their name inspired by a famous sequence in "Pulp Fiction," of course. Other items to share are Hand Cut Steak Tartare, Le Poulet Wings, Maine Lobster Rolls and Baked Oysters. Perhaps not surprisingly, SHe boasts a fine selection of salads such as the Tomato Panzanella and Pear and Saga. The restaurant's menu serves up a dizzying array of signature entrees, from a Free Range

Chicken Chop to Spiced Ahi Tuna to Beef Short Ribs. Blackened Scallops and Pan Roasted Jumbo Shrimp ensure those who prefer surf over turf have an ample number of delicious dishes to choose from. Naturally, the centerpiece of the SHe menu is the steaks. The steaks are divided into three sections: “She Cuts,” “He Cuts” and “We Cuts.” For a lighter appetite, there's a six-ounce center-cut filet, for example, whereas "We" cuts are meant to be shared and range up to a massive, 40-ounce porterhouse for two. Assuming those two are absolutely famished, of course! The filets at SHe are, without exaggeration, some of the most delicious steaks you'll find anywhere in Las Vegas. Chef Stecher notes, "You start with a great product, then it's all about the way we season and sear the steaks, and rest them. We top our steaks with 'beurre fondue,' an emulsified butter, and it's more like a sauce than butter. The way we prepare our steak is really something special." The beurre fondue helps make the steaks at SHe delicious, and also keeps them extraordinarily moist. Should your tastes run more to

the sea than land, the "Ocean Cold" dishes feature a tempting collection of seafood such as oysters on the half shell, the Menage (shrimp and oysters), Tuna Tartare and Jumbo Lump Crab Wraps. Just when you think you've reached maximum capacity, you discover SHe's dessert offerings, entitled "Misbehaving" on the menu. It's a gauntlet of treats for the senses, in the form of skillfully prepared dishes like Tiramisu Cups, cheesecake (make that Shescake), Goodnight Kisses, Sinnamon (sic) Twists and even a Popcorn Milkshake. SHe by Morton's is open daily for happy hour at 5:00 p.m., with dinner service starting at 5:30 p.m. The restaurant closes at 11:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and at midnight on Friday and Saturday. We caught up with Laci Urcioli a Marketing & Entertainment Consultant to ask for some inside scoop on Las Vegas for our readers. Today: What do you find most unique about this town? Laci: Las Vegas is an exceptional place that lures the inner wild child out of our visitors like no other place in the world. Maybe it is the neon lights or the cold air in the casinos? Whatever it is, I love it! This is the only town that provokes people to think before posting photos to Facebook (most of the time) and turns everyone into a superhero while they are here. Today: Craziest Vegas story you care to share? Laci: I have lived in Vegas since I was nine years old and my parents were performers on The Strip, so crazy and interesting stories are part of my DNA. I watched my parents rehearse on stage while I colored pictures and drank Shirley Temples in the back of the lounge. Celebrities, Elvis impersonators, magicians, musicians and showgirls were a normal part of my everyday life. My favorite memory, which could definitely be considered crazy, is when Sammy Davis Jr. spent the evening with my family. Rehearsals, dinner, drinks and lots of cigarette smoke are mostly what I remember but even through all of the smoke, I knew he was something special. He was mysterious and dapper with a smile that reminded me of my grandfather. He gave me mints every time I walked by and even taught me a couple of tap dance moves. As a kid, you don’t realize how cool all of this is until you grow up and then wish you paid more attention. Today: Where do you eat in Vegas at night? Laci: There are so many great restaurants off of The Strip that are unique to Vegas. Every tourist 60

should venture outside of the neon corridor to check out these places and see what else they find. If you like Thai food, Lotus of Siam provides an incredible adventure for your palette and will never disappoint. Nora’s is one of the best Italian restaurants in town that leaves you feeling as if you spent an evening in the family kitchen tasting sauce from grandma’s spoon. I Love Sushi is a little bit further away from The Strip but is one of many sushi restaurants in town that deliver incredible concoctions. Lastly, Firefly is a great place to hang with friends, drink and munch on tapas. Today: What “Vegas Tradition” haven’t you done yet? Laci: It seems that Vegas traditions have shifted recently thanks to movies like The Hangover. Long gone are the days where riding down The Strip in a limousine while you and your friends hang out of the sunroof is the highlight of your trip. Watching the Mirage volcano and trying to win millions of dollars on Megabucks now seems old school and tired. So, in the vein of the new traditions set forth by Hollywood, I can confidently say that I have never spent an evening in a hotel suite with Mike Tyson while running for my life from a tiger. I have also never gotten married at a little chapel nor have I stolen a police cruiser while escaping a group of thugs and mobsters. Today: Best tip for tourists? Laci: Wear comfy shoes to the club because nobody is looking at your feet, trust me. Always over tip your servers as this town survives on gratuity. Don’t try to reenact The Hangover...it was a movie. Be careful what you post on Facebook. Today: What show have you seen in Las Vegas stands out in your memory and why? Laci: The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil is my one of favorite shows on the strip. Today: Hidden treasure in Las Vegas is? Laci: The Artisan is a really cool hotel, bar and restaurant off of The Strip that feels like Paris in the 1940’s. I could hang at this place anytime day or night. Unique artwork covers every inch of the walls and ceiling while the furniture, lighting and fountain the lobby provide a mysterious allure to anyone that visits. Today: Time to plug, tell us about yourself: Laci: I have been very fortunate in having the chance to work for many great companies in Las Vegas before venturing out on my own as a consultant. I was most recently the Director of Marketing for Cirque du Soleil, which was an unforgettable experience as I learned to take a colorful approach to every project that I worked on. I now consult for companies on marketing and public relations strategies, promotional partnerships and business development and am enjoying the variety of projects that I am asked to contribute to.
