EXPLODING WITH SOUND!
G
By Peter Gaunt
rab your drumstick and play along to the beating pulse that drives the rhythm of Recycled Percussion. You, along with the hundreds of other patrons play, sing and interact with the four members of the band throughout the performance that is the highlyenergetic show inside The Showroom at The Quad. Walking into the theater, you are handed a drumstick and an instrument. That “instrument” is a bowl, pan or pot of some kind to bang out a beat in time with the guys on stage. Your instrument is also used to applaud, show support for your favorite member of the band and all-around to just make celebratory noise. With the bright lights, and showmanship that is all-things Vegas, this show doesn’t disappoint. The theater is table and chairs style with seats coming all the way to the front of the stage. This is an added bonus when sitting close to the action See Exploding on pg 58

WHAT'S HAPPENING
Las Vegas Spring Restaurant Week
From Friday, March 8 through Friday, March 15, Restaurant Week gives tourists and Las Vegas locals the opportunity to help out by dining out. Participating restaurants all over the city are offering price fixe menus ranging in price from $20.13 to $50.13 per person. A fixed portion of the proceeds from each menu will benefit Three Square Food Bank and the fight against hunger in Southern Nevada. (Participating restaurants create menus for breakfast, lunch or dinner and select a donation of $4, $5, or $6 for each meal sold.) Las Vegas Restaurant Week began in 2007 to support Three Square, Southern Nevada’s only food bank. Today, Three Square feeds nearly 100,000 men, women, children and seniors each month; however the need is estimated at three times their current reach. By participating in Las Vegas Restaurant Week, you are helping them get closer to their goal of feeding the 300,000 people in need in Southern Nevada. All proceeds from Restaurant Week remain in Las Vegas and help Three Square in its fight to end hunger in Southern Nevada. Three Square is a member of the Feeding America network of food banks. For additional information visit threesquare.org or helpoutdineoutlv.org. Participating restaurants for 2013 include the following, but be sure to check www.helpoutdineoutlv.org for the latest information, addresses, phone numbers and menus with pricing for each participating restaurant.

Their selection of signature rolls includes the Katana Roll made with spicy tuna and shrimp tempura topped with tuna and yellowtail; a delicious combination. Want to try something really special? Ask your server if they can make you a roll that is not on the menu – the White Lotus Roll. It is made with rock shrimp, asparagus and avocado topped with albacore and crispy onions in truffled soy. The amazing combination of flavors and textures is not to be missed. If you are not in the mood for sushi, their entrée selections include Filet Mignon with ginger teriyaki sauce and “Ji-Dori” Free Range Chicken served with grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes as well as other favorites. If you’ve made it this far and still have room for dessert, you absolutely must try their Raspberry Bread Pudding served with Caramel Gelato and a trio of sauces. It is a fantastic, indulgent end to an amazing meal! Sushi Roku is a unique culinary experience that will have you talking about it for weeks after. Don’t leave Las Vegas without trying it out!

Twisted Vegas
A Bucket Full of Things You Didn’t Know About Slots
By Scott Roeben They’re everywhere in Las Vegas. In grocery stores. In gas stations. And, yes, even in casinos. Actually, slot machines bring in the lion’s share of revenue to casinos (a whopping 70 percent). There’s even a slot machine called “Lion’s Share.” More about that in a minute. Think you know everything there is to know about slot machines? Think again! The Liberty Bell was the very first slot machine, invented in 1895. It was based upon the card game of poker. Did you know the bell is the oldest symbol still used on today’s slot machines? When you see a bar symbol on a slot machine, does it make you think of gum? It should! The bar came from the Bell Fruit Gum logo. In the early 1900s, machines gave out gum, and other fruit symbols (including the cherry and melon) on modern day slots also came from gum flavors. Slot machines have a number of nicknames. “One-armed bandit” is probably the most common, but did you know a slot machine is called a “fruit machine” in Great Britain? A slot machine is called a “pokie” in Australia.
There is one slot machine for every eight inhabitants of Las Vegas. Ever play Megabucks? Megabucks is a “progressive” slot machine, linked with others to generate a giant jackpot. Of each dollar played in a Megabucks machine, about eight percent goes into the big jackpot. The lights on slot machines, called “candles,” are color-coded to signify the minimum bet on a given machine. If you see a yellow candle, it’s a quarter machine. Red means it’s a nickel machine and blue means it’s a dollar machine. On a slot machine reel, spaces without symbols are called “ghosts.” On a casino floor, a row of slot machines is called a “bank.” Sometimes, a group of slot machines are in a circular or oval shape, known as a “carousel.” The world’s first video slot was developed in 1976. They first appeared in the former Las Vegas Hilton (now the LVH). Although used less and less frequently because of ticket-in/ticket-out technology, the bin where coins fall in a slot machine is called the “hopper.” There’s a term for how slot machines pay small amounts, fairly frequently, to entice players into staying seated and betting. It’s called a “taste.” Because today’s slot machines are run by microprocessors, the reels and “arm” are said to exist “for historical and entertainment reasons only.” As for that Lion’s Share slot, it’s a holdover from an earlier era in Vegas. The machine, at MGM Grand, is a curiosity because its jackpot has never hit, and gaming laws state it can’t be removed from the casino until it pays off. Bonus: Whoever ultimately wins the big jackpot also wins the slot machine itself. 57
Exploding continued from pg 6
because the show is fully interactive with the audience. Whether you are with your kids, friends or grandparents, everyone will have a good time. The show starts with the curtain rising and the four members of the band playing upside down from high above the stage attached to drum kits. The kits are made of buckets of different sizes, trash cans and other unusual items that make a great beat. This is the first of many great visuals to come. The four band members, Justin Spencer, Matt Bowman, Ryan Vezina, and Todd Griffin come out of their harnesses to show that they don’t all just play the drums; there is a guitar and a nice set-up for a DJ also. The jumping, dancing and acrobatics of this act is what keeps fans coming back beyond just the cool feeling of the entire show. With its high-energy and familiar songs Recycled Percussion comes alive with audience members clanging and thwacking along with big smiles throughout the hour and 15 minute performance. Another great aspect of the show is the inclusion of songs that
everyone should know. Whether it be from an oldies station on the radio playing classic Beatles songs, Journey or Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, there is something for everyone. The show even included a “Totally Random Cookie Time”, where warm chocolate cookies were passed out to the crowd. Who doesn’t love a fresh, warm cookie surprise! Recycled Percussion started with front man, Spencer, putting together a high school talent show gig, more than 10 years ago and the group now plays on the Las Vegas Strip. Not to mention an array of other awards including a third-place performance on television show “America’s Got Talent” and on the front page of “USA Today.” You can tell that these guys have earned their stripes or, should I say sticks, over the years. Solid performers and equally good musicianship allows this show to change from show to show with nuances that only professionals know how to pull off. Another fun aspect of this show is when the performers ask for volunteers in the audience to
participate in a “Training Zoo” exercise on stage with them. These eight people come up and are given masks to wear. The masks are funny monkey faces with one of the volunteers unaware that the eyes are blinded. This is where the funny happens. The person can’t see the band leader instructing the rest of their masked companions doing various exercises like raising their arms or doing leg bends and require the assistance of the person standing next to them. Getting a blinded person to do some
of the aforementioned activities is a pretty humorous and gets the crowd laughing (as if they weren’t already enjoying themselves). When the skit is over, everyone with a mask takes off from the stage only to leave, again, the blinded one behind. He finally figures it out, and too leaves the stage wearing a smile. If you want a family-friendly show on the Strip, and for a good price then look no further than Recycled Percussion at The Quad. It is one you don’t want to miss!
Vegas Insider Today: What “Vegas Tradition” haven’t you done yet? Andy: Having Elvis marry me and a girl I just met in a casino, prior to her stealing my credit card that is. Today: Best tip for tourists? Andy: Buy your show tickets from www.vegasliveshow.com - I own that site.
We caught up with Emmy award winning Andy Walmsley of AWE (Andy Walmsley Entertainment) to ask for some inside scoop on Las Vegas for our readers. Today: What do you find most unique about this town? Andy: The fact that you can walk into any Casino and hear laughter within 10 seconds. People who live in “Normal” towns have normal life problems but when they come to Vegas they are here to forget them and just have fun. It’s intoxicating to live in an environment where everyone is happy and laughing. Today: Craziest Vegas story you care to share? Andy: Perhaps the time I met a girl at a Casino bar, I had put my credit card behind the bar and opened a tab, I went to the restroom and when I returned the bartender informed me that my “wife” had closed out the bill and taken my card! My spouse imposter was arrested an hour later at the Trump hotel buying jewelry in the gift shop. Today: Where do you eat in Vegas at night? Andy: I live, breathe and eat on the Strip. It’s rare I even venture into the local neighborhoods so I would have to say that I eat almost exclusively on the Strip. I am addicted to Brio at town square, The Eiffel Tower restaurant is one of my faves and I’m kind of obsessed with Public House in the Venetian at the moment. Today: Best place to see the sexy people? Andy: Throw a rock and your going to hit a ‘10’ in this town, but I’d have to say specifically XS, Surrender and in the summer Encore Beach Club. 60
Today: What show have you seen in Las Vegas stands out in your memory and why? Andy: For all the right reasons: Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and “Siegfried and Roy” For all the wrong reasons “Raw Talent Live” and “Surf the Musical”. Today: Where do you see the most art in Las Vegas? Andy: Well I have a Bachelor of Arts degree and having spent three years studying Art History I can safely say I am kind of anti-art. One of the many reasons I moved to Vegas is to be in a vacuous environment with little culture or art. I LOVE it here. Today: Best place to be single and mingle? Andy: I’d say a regular casino floor bar where it is natural to strike up a conversation with a stranger in a fun atmosphere. Certainly not a nightclub, you can not trigger attraction in a woman when you are screaming in her ear. Today: Hidden treasure in Las Vegas is? Andy: Fremont East, The Four Seasons Hotel, The Barrymore Restaurant, The Foundation Room, The Artisan, Mount Charleston Lodge, The Las Vegas Little Theater, I could list places all day long. Today: Time to plug, tell us about AWE: Andy: I am best known for designing some of the most famous TV shows in history, most notably: American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Americas Got Talent, The Biggest Loser, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but I have also designed many shows here in Vegas for example: Terry Fator, Human Nature, Nathan Burton, Divas and many more. I also occasionally produce shows and I own a ticket broker company in Vegas. I also own www.vegashungover. com which is a hysterical site where people can upload funny photos of their friends embarrassing themselves while on vacation in Las Vegas.
