Mike Hammer at Four Queens Downtown comedy-magician Mike Hammer may not have as many billboards as his Strip counterparts, but his show is just as entertaining, while being considerably less expensive. His magic and “mind-reading” routines range from the tried-and-true to the strange and wonderful, but nearly every segment of his show depends upon finding willing subjects to join him onstage. Hammer is a master of balancing teasing his volunteers for comedic effect, while never straying into mockery territory. Make the trek downtown and you won’t be disappointed. Bob Weir

Kansas

For nearly 50 years, Bob Weir has been known for being the most distinctive rhythm guitarist in rock ‘n’ roll. Influenced by hard bop pianist McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane and Igor Stravinsky, Weir has brought unusual depth and a new approach to the role of rhythm guitar expression over the years. At age 17, Weir became the co-founder, guitarist and vocalist of the improvisational jam band Grateful Dead. The band enjoyed a 30-year career with songs written by Weir, including “Truckin’,” “Sugar Magnolia” and “Cassidy.” Weir also found success apart from the group, releasing his first solo album Ace in 1972 and playing in a number of other bands such as Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog and Furthur. In 1994, Weir and his band mates of Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2007 they were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Weir has participated in various reformations with Grateful Dead members, such as stints as The Other Ones and The Dead. Weir has also collaborated in recording and on stage performances with Bob Dylan, bassist Rob Wasserman, pianist Bruce Hornsby, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Black Crowes’ singer Chris Robinson, and in 2008 he performed in two Deadheads for Obama concerts. Weir continues to stay active with RatDog and Furthur, co-led by former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.

Known for the hits “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind,” ‘70s progressive rock band Kansas returns to Las Vegas as part of their 2013 tour. Kansas started as a bar band in Topeka, Kansas, combining Britishstyle progressive rock with elements of both early ‘70s heavy metal and classical music, all while maintaining a hard rock edge. Instrumentally, the music of Kansas is noted for the presence of violin as a lead instrument, dual lead guitars, extensive orchestrations and melodic interplay. In 1976, more than two years after their debut release, Kansas charted their first hit single, “Carry On Wayward Son” and in 1978 they charted their biggest hit, “Dust in the Wind.” In all, Kansas has released 25 radio singles and 14 studio albums, including the 2000 release “Somewhere to Elsewhere.” Kansas recently reached a new audience through their presence in popular video games “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero.” Their music was also featured in such hit films as “Old School” and “Anchorman.” Dates: 3/2-3/3 Price: $55 and up Time: 8pm Location: Orleans

The White Buffalo Singer/Songwriter The White Buffalo comes to Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip Saturday, March 2nd. Special guest Jack Evan Johnson, frontman for local Vegas favorites Dude City, will be opening the show. Jake Smith’s “White Buffalo” consists of Matt Lynott on drums and Tommy Andrews on bass. Alone or with his band, The White Buffalo incorporates blues, old time country, folk and rock into a stripped down unmistakable sound. The White Buffalo is a reference to a big powerful kind of American Symbol, which is a perfect moniker for Jake. Everything about him is big, from his physical size to his amazing vocal range. The White Buffalo represents an authentic homage to hard life on the road, when artists truly lived what they sang about. The White Buffalo’s first full-length album, Hogtied Like a Rodeo, debuted in 2002, followed by The White Buffalo EP. Off the grid for a while, The White Buffalo returned in 2010 with the release of his second EP, Prepare for Black and Blue.Being a great lyrical storyteller and singing with honesty and thoughtful reflection is something that comes naturally to Jake. His recently released, Once Upon a Time in The West, is his second full length album. He said that this was the first time since 1999 that the band had performed at the venue, and was excited to have a feverish crowd. Surprising Discoveries at Main Street Station

Downtown’s Main Street Station Hotel and Casino and Brewery is full of surprises. If you’re in the mood for exploring, you’re bound to find a few curiosities you’d never expect to see in a Las Vegas casino. Slab of the Berlin Wall A portion of the infamous wall that once separated East and West Germany now calls the men’s restroom at Main Street Station home. No kidding! The wall, a symbol of oppression, now takes its rightful place behind a row of urinals. While the graffitifilled wall is in the men’s restroom, we hear intrepid women can’t resist taking a look (often with their male companions serving as scouts to ensure they won’t invade anyone’s privacy). A plaque over the urinals provides information about the Berlin Wall, explaining it was built in 1961 and demolished in 1989, was 12 feet tall, 18 inches thick. Glimmering Chandeliers One of the more striking aspects of the décor at Main Street Station has to be the chandeliers. Guests are often surprised to find out many of the chandeliers have a colorful history. Bronze chandeliers over the casino’s main pit came from the Coca-Cola Building in Austin, Texas. Another chandelier, in the rotunda near the bridge that connects Main Street Station to the California casino, came from the Figaro Opera House in Paris, France. Other chandeliers, from the San Francisco Opera House, now hang in the hotel’s Garden Court Buffet, helping to

make it one of the most stunning buffet spaces in Las Vegas. The Wild Boar An oversized, distinctive brass boar certainly stands out, adorning one of the casino bars at Main Street Station. This brass boar came from a fountain in Nice, France. It’s a replica of a Renaissance period original in Florence, Italy. Buffalo Bill’s Private Rail Car That’s right. Outside Main Street Station is a fully-restored rail car once used by Buffalo Bill Cody. The car, called “The Blackhawk,” was built in 1903 and transported Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show from 1906 until Cody died in 1917. The car’s interior has sleeping berths, a dining room and even bathrooms with showers, a rare luxury in its time. The car still has some of the original private china and flatware. It’s a railfan’s dream come true. Belgian Street Lamps Main Street Station’s red granite and bronze street lamps were first installed in the Town Square of Brussels, Belgium. They were kept in storage to protect them during World War I before making their way to Las Vegas. One of the great things about these, and other, discoveries at Main Street Station is the hotel provides guests with a comprehensive brochure highlighting the location and history of these hidden gems, and visitors can take self-guided walking tours to their heart’s content, completely free of charge. 57

the most quirky and unforgettable shows in Las Vegas, it’s one of the quirkiest anywhere in the world. A recent relocation from The Venetian to Monte Carlo has resulted in new elements being added to the show, but much remains the same, including opportunities for audience members to get up-close-and-personal with the Blue Men themselves, complete with their trademark, wide-eyed stares. You haven’t really lived until you’ve shared a Twinkie dinner onstage with these masters of the absurd. “Show in the Sky” at Rio Las Vegas This free show at Rio features Broadway-quality singing and dancing, with a Las Vegas flair, followed by a parade of overhead “fantasy floats.” For $12.95, guests can ride along in the floats, tossing Mardi Gras beads to revelers below. It’s a rare perspective, and makes for a great story when you get back home. Jeff Civillico at The Quad Comedian and juggler Jeff Civillico has the energy of a hummingbird and the comedic timing of a veteran street performer (because he was one). He also has a way of seamlessly integrating members of his audience into his show in a way 58

that’s original, charming and hilarious. In one segment, Civillico teaches an audience member to juggle in under a minute. In another, he uses two volunteers to help him mount his unicycle, with uproarious results. Civillico’s 2:00 p.m. at The Quad (formerly the Imperial Palace) is nonstop, family-friendly entertainment, and not just because some volunteers get marshmallows. (You’ll see.) Anthony Cools at Paris Las Vegas A family show this is not! Anthony Cools’ comedy-hypnosis show is brimming with adult humor and outrageous behavior, and that’s what makes it such an incredibly entertaining night out. Again, without audience participation, Cools wouldn’t have a show. He starts with a large group of volunteers, whittling them down to the best subjects, then it’s off to the races. Cools masterfully creates scenarios which elicit laughter and blushes, all based on posthypnotic suggestion. You’ll swear the volunteers are plants, but they’re real people, just letting go and having a blast. One word of caution: The shows are videotaped (for sale after the show), so remember that what happens onstage in Vegas doesn’t necessarily stay in Vegas.

Paul Vigil at The Mirage Magician Paul Vigil’s show features jaw-dropping parlor magic with an intellectual twist. Vigil effortlessly appears to read the minds of audience members, leaving them to ponder his amazing feats days and weeks after his show is over. He performs just one show a week, on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., but it’s worth the wait. As an added bonus, Paul Vigil’s show, inside King Ink, is free. “Recycled Percussion” at The Quad The hyperkinetic percussionists in this rhythm-fueled show at The Quad ensure everyone takes part in the performance by distributing instruments to guests as they enter the theater. From there, audience members drum along as the musicians, who gained national exposure on “America’s Got Talent,” use everyday objects like ladders and sinks as instruments. The show, which recently moved to The Quad from the Tropicana, is a dazzling display of what’s described as “extreme percussion, engaging humor and extraordinary athleticism.” “V, The Ultimate Variety Show” at V Theater One of the constants in this everchanging variety show at the V Theater in The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is

comedian Russ Merlin. In his bestknown routine, Merlin (an alum of Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show”) invites four volunteers onstage and, with the assistance of masks and balloons, puts volunteers through their paces, resulting in a routine both funny, strange and a true original. Marc Savard at V Theater Marc Savard is said to be the world’s youngest professional hypnotist, and part of the fun is watching one of your friends or loved ones fall under his spell. As with many stage hypnotism shows, audience members let their guard down and interact with Savard, and each other, in ways comical and absurd. Savard skillfully guides his subjects through amusing situations, astounding one and all with the power of the subconscious mind. This show is one of the best you’ll almost perhaps remember having attended in Las Vegas. Vinnie Favorito at Flamingo Las Vegas Audience members aren’t just part of the act for this seasoned comedian, they are his act. Favorito is a master of audience interplay, working his way through the crowd and using his years of onstage experience to toss out equal opportunity, roaststyle zingers like a machine gun of mirth. Few subjects are off limits, and if you can’t take a joke, this may not be the show for you. With Vinnie Favorito, you don’t even have to volunteer. He’ll find you. 59

There are wonderful restaurants and unique destinations; restaurants like Ichiza and Le Thai, used bookstores like Amber Unicorn, vintage shops downtown, Red Rock and the Valley of Fire. Theater, music, visual arts, unique museums; so much to do that is rich and varied and one of a kind if you are brave and do a little digging.

We caught up with Danielle Kelly, Executive Director at The Neon Museum to ask for some inside scoop on Las Vegas for our readers. Today: What do you find most unique about this town? Danielle: Where do I start? Today: Craziest Vegas story you care to share? Danielle: I care only to share that most of them started at Champagne’s and ended at Dino’s sometime the next day. Today: Where do you eat in Vegas at night? Danielle: I love Casa Di Amore on the East Side. It is very old world: great food, cozy little bar, intimate atmosphere, red leather décor and lounge acts every night-a Vegas classic and authentic neighborhood joint. The sign is great, too. Today: Best place to see the sexy people? Danielle: I don’t know about The Sexy People, but Fremont East is pretty easy on the eyes. Today: What “Vegas Tradition” haven’t you done yet? Danielle: I have not and will not be 60

Functional: Don’t try to hail a cab on the street and please, for heaven’s sake, use the crosswalks. We want you to get home in one piece. Today: What show have you seen in Las Vegas stands out in your memory and why? Danielle: I seem to recall a particularly life changing lounge act at the Italian American club. Today: Where do you see the most art in Las Vegas? Danielle: Downtown-where else? Today: Hidden treasure in Las Vegas is? Danielle: The Pinball Hall of Fame is not so hidden anymore, but a treasure nonetheless. Today: Time to plug, tell us about The Neon Museum: Danielle: The Neon Museum celebrates Las Vegas’ native art form: the neon sign. Signage dating from the 30s is collected for an outdoor exhibition that features signage from popular international icons like the Stardust and local icons like the Green Shack. The neon sign, as innovatively developed in Las Vegas, intersects architecture, art, pop culture, graphic design, and advertising. The Neon Museum is home to Las Vegas’ spectacular visual and pop cultural history; come to see the icons and leave with fresh and unexpected knowledge about America’s most storied city.
