A LO HA

ach island in the Hawaiian Island chain boasts its own natural splendors, cultural offerings, popular foods and friendly residents. O‘ahu is the site of the state capital of Honolulu, and moves at a faster pace as the hub of government, military defense and international business. Start your exploration here, then venture to our neighbor isles—there’s something for everyone.

\

History ‘Iolani Palace, located in downtown Honolulu, is the nation’s only official state residence of royalty. Historic buildings, many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sit within a two-mile radius. Nearby Chinatown bustles daily amid historic buildings and unique businesses. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor gained nationwide attention when Japan’s Imperial Navy carried out a surprise attack. The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites consist of four locations illustrating America’s entry into World War II to its end when the Instrument of Surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri.

Polynesian Cultural Center in La‘ie. Experience the Pacific cultures of Samoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawai‘i via interactive villages and exhibits. At Waimea Valley, learn about Hawai‘i culture and history, deeply rooted in spirituality and traditions. Explore botanical gardens and take part in daily activities.

Environment The island offers hiking trails to suit all

levels, botanical gardens and nationally recognized white sand beaches in every direction. Take to the road for a drive to the countryside—the North Shore—out to the community of Kailua and back toward Waikiki along the scenic Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline. For panoramic views stretching from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor, head to Tantalus via Round Top Drive. Stop at Pu‘u Ualaka‘a Park and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Sunset is the best time!

\

People We are a mix of global ethnicities, cultures and traditions. O‘ahu is called the Gathering Place for a reason! While here, get to know the people behind the counter, and you’ll touch upon the heart of aloha. Talk story, sample the wide array of cultural dishes, get the inside scoop and make new friends. Your vacation will be all the more richer because of it. Visitors come from around the world seeking a memorable vacation experience, a getaway to paradise. Hawai‘i will most certainly provide just that. But take one step further and open your eyes and heart to the adventure of getting to know the unknown. Arrive as a tourist, leave as a traveler. he summer months of June, July and August are the time the islands celebrate Obon, or Bon, season. It carries a universal theme of honoring and remembering our ancestors. The observance has its roots in Buddhist tradition and Japanese culture that says this is a time when ancestral spirits return to visit family homes. At homes that observe this tradition, usually two spherical paper lanterns are lit and placed alongside the family altar with offerings of food. Ancestors thus make their way there and spend a few days among family. Once Obon is over, ancestors return to their spiritual home.

At Buddhist temples across the islands, a memorial service is held first followed by the bon festival (usually called “bon dance” by locals). The community, people from around the island, as well as visitors gather to celebrate the return of ancestors with lots of delicious foods and dancing to the accompaniment of drums. Every bon dance is different, but all offer food and a fun way to mingle with isle residents. The obon season began in June. The bulk of the festivities take place this month and will end in mid-August.

owntown Honolulu is a rich mix of historic buildings where ali‘i (members of Hawai‘i’s nobility) once lived and sleek modern-day structures reflect the mid-day sun. Hawai‘i is unique to the nation’s states in many ways, but a visit to Honolulu’s Capital District best illustrates the state’s unusual place in history. It’s the only one to have once been ruled by its own monarchy. Architecture buffs will find a treasure trove of jewels. At the center of it all facing busy King Street, is the stately ‘Iolani Palace, designed in an American Florentine style. It was the first building in Honolulu to have electricity. King Kalakaua dedicated the building two years later in 1874. This palace, meant to be a place of grandeur for the monarchy, was the site of its dissolution on January 17, 1893. Kawaiaha‘o Church was built by the first missionaries to settle in Honolulu. Its walls are made of coral rock and it is the burial site of King William Lunalilo and his parents. Legends in Concert

Exciting nightlife

aikiki offers a number of fun evening shows perfect for the family. Here are a few highlights: Whether you’re familiar with the music of The Beatles or not, one night with Fourever Fab will make you a fan. Comprised of seasoned musicians who have performed the timeless hits of The Beatles for years, this group of four tribute artists takes you back to the 60s and 70s with songs that enthralled audiences worldwide. “Hard Days Night,” “Help,” “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude” and “Here Comes the Sun” are just a handful of tunes you’ll be humming long after the show. Created especially for Hawai‘i, Burn’n Love captures the Elvis whom fans in the islands experienced in the 70s. Darren Lee has been performing as Elvis since he was 15 years old and carries on the King’s legacy on Maui and now, on O‘ahu. Enjoy a trip back in time listening to your favorite songs, and seeing lots of memorable hip-shaking dance moves and Elvis’ iconic outfits. If you’re not already a fan, you will be by the end of the show! Legends in Concert’s RockA-Hula features a top-notch cast of tribute artists portraying The King Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson at the Royal Hawaiian Theater. Hear the songs and see the moves that brought Elvis to the forefront of the music scene. Dynamic dancers and a live band really add to the fun. In the Magic of Polynesia, thrilling magical feats and Polynesian song, chant and dance merge into a one-of-a-kind show starring International Magician Society’s Merlin awardwinning master illusionist John Hirokawa. Polynesia’s rich culture is illustrated through colorful performances and a fire dancer, interwoven with illusions backed by creative pyrotechnics. Te Moana Nui: Tales of the Pacific shares the stories of the exotic South Pacific through beautiful song and dance at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Moose McGillycuddy’s

T

he humble hamburger first caught widespread attention at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Mo. in 1904. It sure has come a long way since then—fried, grilled, flame broiled, slider sized, supersized and more. All we want is a juicy, tasty burger that hits the spot. Here’s where to find one: Moose McGillycuddy’s offers a long list of burgers from the Basic to the Fantasy Burger boasting three patties—a full pound!—bacon, sauteed mushrooms and onions and cheese. Their Famous Burgers are made from grass-fed cattle from the Maui Cattle Company. The Molokai BBQ Burger includes kalua pig tossed in a mango BBQ sauce. The Kalua Pig sandwich is a local favorite—it’s shredded pork topped with sauteed onions and served with cabbage and mayo on a french roll. Experience the Aloha at Mahaloha Burger! The burgers here

Kalua Pig

Lomilomi Salmon

Laulau—It’s like unwrapping a gift—peel away the outer ti leaves to find edible taro leaves that look and taste much like cooked spinach. Inside, you’ll find either pork, chicken or butterfish. Usually cooked in the imu (underground oven), laulau is also steamed on the stovetop. Kalua pig—The highlight of every lu‘au is the uncovering of the kalua pig that’s been cooking in the imu for hours. Its flavor is smoky, salty; consistency is tender and juicy. It can also be cooked in a slow cooker or oven for the same delicious flavor. Lomilomi salmon—It may not be a traditional Hawaiian dish, but lomilomi is a favorite. It’s made with diced salmon, tomatoes, green and round onions and salt to taste. Let it marinate overnight to enhance the flavor of the salmon. The salmon’s omega-3 fatty acids are a plus!

Poi—Certainly an acquired taste, poi is made from mashing steamed or baked taro root, and adding water to create a desired consistency. Because the taro plant, or kalo, is central to the Hawaiian people; its cultivation is an honored tradition.

ISLAND LIVING

Investing in a vacation property in Hawai‘i can be fun and profitable depending on your goals, usage and timing. If you plan written by Trevor Benn (R)

to make Hawai‘i a regular destination for your family, a corporate incentive for your employees, or even as a second home, one possible option might be a condo-hotel. A condo-hotel is generally a wholly owned property you can purchase that is zoned for transient accommodations. This means it can be utilized for daily, weekly, or longer-term rentals. Regular condominiums often have restrictions that disallow short-term rentals. Condo-hotel units allow easier access for management. They are also usually sold fully furnished and often have onsite management as an option for owners to use to manage their unit (i.e. Trump, Outrigger, Ritz-Carlton, Aqua). Most guests of these properties do not even realize the hotel room they are in is actually owned by an individual. This allows for hassle-free ownership, daily upkeep and, hopefully, a reasonable return on investment. Most condo hotels do not include parking and have no in-room laundry. Financing can also be more difficult. Do your homework and consult with an expert when deciding if a condo hotel is the right purchase for you.

about the “3 Ride Special.” The movie “Jaws” terrorized an entire generation of ocean goers—who didn’t experience a nightmare of a great white attack on dry land, or better yet, thought twice before entering a pool? If they’re awake and playful, an in-water “drop” allows guests to get wet with the dolphins and experience the sights and sounds of dolphin interaction from an underwater perspective. Snorkeling and safety gear is provided, including prescription masks. Afterwards, enjoy a sit-down meal at Spinners Café. Transport provided between Waikiki and Ko Olina hotels.

If you’ve ever hesitated to use snorkeling equipment, there’s now an easier-to-use option from Easy Breath Snorkel Rental. Designed in France and made in Italy, the Easybreath snorkel mask is an award-winning, innovative product that allows you to breathe normally through the mouth and nose while allowing a 180-degree panoramic view

of the marine world—you can even go completely underwater thanks to a dry top system that prevents water from entering the snorkel. Great for all ages, beginners and expert snorkelers. No fogging, no clearing, no hassle! A U.S. veteran, locally owned and operated business. Online reservations are required. Snorkel Bob’s rents and sells its own brand of gear: Seamo Betta and Li‘l Mo Betta RX masks; Bigfoots (15-17) and Moflex fins; Ultima Bubba dry snorkel; plus Mofl02 for fresh air with every breath. Bob’s 250-page fish photo book, Every Fish Tells a Story, is $7.50 with snorkel gear for the week (reg. $28). Free 24-hour interisland gear return. Snorkel Bob’s also offers land, sea and air activities. Book two seats on specific activities and get a beach bag or boogie board for the week.
