Jamelle R. Elliott '96, '97 MA
Assistant Coach, Women's Basketball UConn
Jamelle Elliott is a distinguished figure in the world of women's basketball, currently marking her 16th season as an assistant coach for the UConn women's basketball team as they wrap up the 2023-24 season. Her journey with the team has been nothing short of remarkable, standing out as a student-athlete and contributing significantly to UConn's first NCAA Championship team.
Her journey in basketball began at a summer camp at the high school her cousin Adrian Elliott attended, leading her to also attend H.D. Woodson High School in Washington DC. Jamelle played volleyball, basketball, and softball in high school-- winning a city championship in softball as the starting pitcher. In addition, her basketball team won two consecutive city championships, and she earned individual honors, including Scholar-Athlete recognition and a place on the Washington Post All-Metro Team her senior year. Jamelle graduated 9th in her class. Her talent and commitment to sports and academics continued into college as she played summer league in the Georgetown area of DC, catching the eye of Geno Auriemma.
Recruited to play for the University of Connecticut, Jamelle played in 135 games, achieving an impressive overall record of 117–18 (.867) and contributing to the team's undefeated season in 1995, securing the NCAA National Championship. As a four-year letterwinner, she played an instrumental role in building the women's basketball dynasty. Her achievements include ranking No. 2 among UConn's all-time rebounding leaders (1,054), holding the No. 5 position in Big East career rebounding (558), and securing the No. 11 spot in UConn career scoring (1,387). Jamelle's impact on UConn's athletic history is further accentuated by being only the second player in the university's history to surpass both the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound milestones. Throughout her collegiate career, Jamelle exemplified dedication and consistency, never missing a single game or practice
during her four years as a player.
She remained in Storrs, accepting an assistant coaching position for the women’s basketball team. During her 12-year run in this role, she helped coach UConn to five national championships, as well as another undefeated 39–0 season in 2009.
Jamelle left UConn to serve as the head coach of women’s basketball at Cincinnati from 2009-2018. Over nine seasons, she turned the program around and improved its performance culminating in a 19–13 season that earned the Bearcats a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Under her guidance, they earned two postseason berths, and every student-athlete who completed their eligibility during her tenure earned their degree. During her time at Cincinnati she was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve on Geno Auriemma’s staff for the 2016 USA Olympic Women’s Basketball team who went on to win the gold medal in Rio, Brazil. In 2017 the gymnasium at John Hayden Johnson Junior High School in Washington, DC was named after her.
After Cincinnati, Jamelle returned to UConn, taking on the role of associate athletic director for The National C Club – a community of former UConn student-athletes created to engage with current UConn student-athletes through networking, mentoring, internships, and job opportunities.
Jamelle graduated from UConn School of Business in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. She went on to earn a master's in sport management from UConn in 1997 with aspirations of becoming an athletic director. Her remarkable statistics at the University of Connecticut showcase her consistent and impactful performance both on and off the court.
