Head Coach
Duncan McFarland
Duncan McFarland begins his ninth season as head coach of the UC San Diego women’s volleyball team in 2004. He guided the Tritons to a 25-5 overall mark and a second-straight 19-3 record in the highly competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association. His team held the No. 1 national ranking for the first time since the move to Division II and took that ranking into play in the NCAA Pacific Regional in RIMAC. The top ranking gave UCSD a first round bye before they were eliminated by a 3-2 score in the Regional Semifinals by Hawaii Pacific.
9th Season
The 2002 season saw UCSD go 26-5 overall and 19-3 in league play, finishing second in the CCAA race behind Cal State San Bernardino for the second year in a row. The Tritons’ season concluded with a 3-1 defeat at CSUSB in a Pacific Region Semifinal. UCSD led the conference in digs for a second straight year, while also leading in kills and assists. Four Tritons were named to All-CCAA Teams. McFarland led the Tritons to the NCAA Division II National Semifinals in a remarkable 2001 campaign. After finishing second in the the CCAA, UCSD stunned league champion Cal State San Bernardino in the NCAA Pacific Region Championship. UCSD earned a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in Allendale, Michigan, defeating Lock Haven University (PA) in the Quarterfinals. The Tritons’ season came to an end with a loss to eventual National Champion Barry University (FL) in the Semifinals. UCSD finished with an overall record of 25-7 and a 17-4 CCAA mark. McFarland was honored as the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year. In eight seasons at UCSD, McFarland has compiled a record of 20147, givinig him a winning percentage of .811. His tenure at UCSD was highlighted by the 1997 season, when UCSD captured the Division III National Championship with a dramatic victory over Juniata College (PA) in RIMAC Arena. McFarland was named the 1997 NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year. A 1973 graduate of San Diego State University, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Physical Education, McFarland was an All-American volleyball player for the Aztecs. A member of the 1973 NCAA National Championship team, McFarland also played for the U.S. National Team from 1969 to 1975, including the 1972 Olympic team. Following his amateur career, he played three seasons with the International Volleyball Association, including one year with the San Diego Breakers. In 1999, he was named one of San Diego State’s Top 10 Athletes of the Century.
