Larry Sanders begins his sixth season as head coach of the UC San Diego women’s water polo team. He first joined the UCSD staff in 1993, serving as the men’s water polo assistant coach and director of the team’s recruiting efforts. In five seasons at the helm of the highly-successful UCSD women’s water polo team, Sanders has led the Tritons to a 96-74 record, with WWPA Championship in 2000 and three runner-up finishes. Sanders took over the team during an exciting time for women’s water polo. UCSD had established itself as one of the nation’s top teams, winning five national championships from 1986 to 1994. But in 2000, the NCAA officially recognized women’s water polo as a championship sport, providing Sanders with new opportunities and challenges never before presented to the team. While water polo continues to be added as an NCAA sport at more and more institutions, Sanders has done an admirable job maintaining UCSD’s level of national prestige. Sanders was selected WWWPA Coach of the Year in his rookie season as head coach. His Tritons have also boasted 10 WWPA All-Americans since the move to Division II, including two Player of the Years (Emma Kudritzki in 2002 and Dana Tucker in 2003). A 1988 UCSD graduate, Sanders was a four-year starter for the Tritons, earning All-WWPA honors in each of his last three seasons, as well as Team MVP and an All-American Honorable Mention nod as a senior.

Allison Gregory is in her second season as an assistant water polo coach at UC San Diego. Gregory played water polo at San Diego State from 1995-1999 and graduated in May of 2000 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a double minor in Sociology and Psychology. Since graduation, Gregory has been coaching locally at La Jolla High School. She is currently finishing her teaching credential at San Diego State.

Randy Franke has been associated with water polo at UC San Diego for over 21 years. He begins his sixth season as goalie coach for the women’s water polo team, joining his former Triton teammate, Larry Sanders. Previously, he held a similar position with the men’s water polo team at UCSD. Nicknamed “Franchise,” he had an outstanding playing career at UCSD from 1984-88, earning All-American Honorable Mention as a senior and WWPA Player of the Year honors in both his junior and senior seasons. His 776 goalie saves rank third in Triton history.
