HEAD COACH NATE GARCIA / COACHING STAFF 2007 UC SAN DIEGO CROSS COUNTRY

Head Coach

Nate Garcia 1st Year Nathan Garcia begins his first season as the UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country head coach in 2007. He elevated to the top spot within the program on July 31 after the resignation of former head coach Ted Van Arsdale who directed both squads for 15 years prior to his retirement. “I am excited and honored to be named the head coach at my alma mater,” said Garcia. “I feel privileged to have spent the last 10 years running for and working with Coach Van Arsdale. I am looking forward to continuing the great tradition of excellence he helped to establish here at UC San Diego.” Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude. He then completed a multi-subject professional clear CLAD credential at UCSD in 2001. Since 2002, he has been an assistant coach with both the Triton men’s and women cross country and track & field programs. Garcia was a four-year athlete in both track and cross country while attending UCSD from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a Triton, he earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including being named Verizon All-Academic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2000-01. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year.

Fellow freshman Max Mullender finished second for UCSD in a time of 22:31.5. After Point Loma runner Noe Castellon finished third, UCSD sophomores Daniel Anderson and Gabe LaMothe finished third and fourth with their times of 22:58.4 and 23:28.7, respectively. Up next was the annual UC Irvine Invitational where the Tritons posted an 8th place finish out of the 15 teams competing at the prestigious event. Head coach Ted Van Arsdale had runners finish 21st, 29th, 35th, 52nd and 55th for a team total of 192 points. Morrill was the top runner for the Tritons for the second week in a row, posting a time of 25:44.9, which was the 21st best time on the day on the five mile course. After a decent finish at the Aztec Invitational during the third week, the Tritons traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota, for the Roy Griak Invitational where they finished 13th out of 52 teams. Once again, it was the freshman Morrill crossing the line first, followed by sophomore Jake LeVieux and junior Greg Geldman. UCSD’s lone senior, Daniel Holligan, was the fourth Triton to finish the race, crossing the finish line in a time of 27:50.55

Max Mullender was the 2006 CCAA Freshman of the Year and the Tritons’ top finisher in the conference meet last year.

In a tune-up for the CCAA Championships at the Triton Cross Country Classic, it was again the freshman duo leading the way for UCSD at home. Morrill, the freshman from Huntington Beach, was again the first Triton to complete the race, crossing the finish line in an unofficial time of 26:14.6. The Tritons’ Max Mullender finished the 8k course right behind Morrill with his unofficial time of 26:17.8. Remaining home to host the CCAA Championships two week later, the Tritons finished 3rd among the seven competing teams for the fourth consecutive season. UCSD finished behind Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State, with the Wildcats, ranked 2nd in the nation, picking up their fifth-consecutive CCAA Championship. Mullender and junior Greg Geldman earned All-CCAA recognition after finishing among the top-15 individual racers. Mullender, a Laguna Beach High School graduate, was the top Triton on the afternoon, coming in at an impressive 6th overall with a time of 26:28.40, while Geldman was the second Triton to cross the finish line, finishing 15th overall with a time of 26:46.90. Jesse Morrill finished 3rd for UCSD and just outside conference honors at 17th place overall with a time of 26:50.10. UCSD’s lone senior, Dan Holligan, was 22nd overall with a time of 27:11.80, sophomore Jake LeVieux finished in a tie for 25th at 27:24.30, sophomore Tim Crone was just behind him in 27th place with a time of 27:29.50, and Daniel Anderson was the final Triton to earn points, finishing 36th at 27:59.90. UCSD’s strong efforts continued on November 4th at Chico, as the squad placed 5th during the NCAA Division II West Regionals, two spots away from qualifying for the NCAA National Championships with a total of 161 points. Jesse Morrill was again the top finisher for the UCSD men, crossing the line in a time of 33:05.27, good enough for 11th place overall. Jake LeVieux was the next Triton runner to finish, concluding the 10k race in a time of 33:47.45. Greg Geldman placed 35th 34:00.51, while Dan Holligan, in his final race, and Max Mullender, in the final race of his first season, rounded out the UCSD scorers with their 41st and 47th place finishes in times of 34:12.24 and 34:31.72, respectively. Freshman Mike Wright came in 56th place while Daniel Anderson finished 61st for the Tritons out of the 107 competitors in the event. The Tritons return an incredibly strong nucleus to work with next season, with only one graduating senior and the team being led by freshmen, Max Mullender, who was selected CCAA Freshman of the Year after his performance at home during the CCAA Championships, and Jesse Morrill, who’s performance at the NCAA West Regionals earned him a spot on the NCAA D-II All-West Region squad and capped a terrific first-year campaign at UCSD.

2006 WXC YEAR IN REVIEW 2007 UC SAN DIEGO CROSS COUNTRY Coming off their best season ever at the Division II level, the UCSD women’s cross country team had plenty to be optimistic about heading into 2006. Despite losing the DII West Region Runner of the Year Mimi Hodgins, the Tritons put together another great season under the guidance of Head Coach Ted Van Arsdale. Van Arsdale, in his 15th season at the helm of the UCSD cross country program, led his team to victory at two of three meets UCSD hosted during the season, including a repeat as champion of the Triton Classic. After a 3rd place finish at the CCAA Championships, the Tritons finished 3rd again at the DII West Regionals, good enough for their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA National Championships. UCSD set the tone for the year, tasting victory in its first meet, and first home meet, of the season with a narrow five-point win over local rival Point Loma Nazarene on the UCSD Par Course. UC San Diego juniors Diane Dunn and Emily McGregor finished third and fourth with their times of 15:41.8 and 15:49.3, respectively. Sophomore Ashleigh Montgomery finished fifth with her time of 16:11.8, nine seconds quicker than senior teammate Nina Miller who crossed the line in a time of 16:20.2. Newcomer Jordana Henderson scored the meet-winning points for the Tritons as the freshman finished eighth with her time of 16:28.2. Defending their home territory and their victory at the meet from the previous season, the UCSD women’s cross country team repeated as DII Champions at the Triton Cross Country Classic, edging out Cal State L.A. by one point for the win. Diane Dunn, a captain on this year’s squad, was again the top finisher for the Tritons, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:49.4, giving her sixth place overall. Emily McGregor and junior Amanda Burkhardt were the next two UC San Diego runners to cross the finish line with their times of 23:24.6 and 23:24.9. The duo finished 11th and 12th overall, respectively. Ashleigh Montgomery and Nina Miller rounded out the Triton scorers on the women’s side, finishing in 19th and 20th places with their times of 23:44.8 and 23:50.8 in an important precursor to the CCAA Championships.

Diane Dunn was a 2006 All-CCAA and AllWest Region performer during her junior campaign last season.

Playing host for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships two weeks later, the UCSD women’s cross country team finished third among the strong group of 11 competing teams, with Chico State emerging to capture their fourth league title in the last five years. Despite being unable to repeat as CCAA Champions, the Triton women put on a strong performance at the league championships with Dunn finishing fourth overall with a time of 23:15.30, Miller finishing sixth with a time of 23:25.40, and Montgomery coming in 14th at 23:50.80. All three would earn All-CCAA recognition for their performances. Amanda Burkhardt was the next Triton finisher, completing the 6k course just outside of conference honors in 16th place with a time of 24:01.70. Jordana Henderson (23rd overall), sophomore Catherine Strouse (28th), and sophomore Jessica DiMascio (38th) also scored points for the Tritons. UCSD would finish third again, this time at the NCAA DII West Regionals, earning an invitation to the NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships. After watching the Wildcats pick up the league championship two weeks earlier, the Tritons edged their league rival by one point on Chico’s own course. Diane Dunn was the top finisher for the Triton women, finishing sixth overall with her time of 21:31.05. She was joined on the 15-person All-West Region team by Emily McGregor who finished 10th overall with her time of 21:47.41. Nina Miller, Amanda Burkhardt, and Ashleigh Montgomery finished 19th, 20th and 21st overall respectively, to round out the UCSD scorers. Catherine Strouse finished 48th overall, while Jordana Henderson finished in 60th place out of the 125 runners. The Tritons would end their season on November 18th in Pensacola, Florida, finishing 16th at the DII National Championships. UCSD was paced on the day by Diane Dunn, who finished in 38th place with her time of 21:34.7. She narrowly missed out on All-America accolades as the top-30 finishers earned that status. Nina Miller, the lone senior on this year’s Triton squad concluded her collegiate running career with a 59th place finish in a time of 22:00.4. Amanda Burkhardt finished just one second behind Miller, crossing the line in a time of 22:01.4, good enough for 62nd place. Ashleigh Montgomery and Catherine Strouse rounded out the UCSD scorers on the day, finishing in 84th and 126th places, respectively, with their times of 22:33.7 and 23:24.5. The Tritons also ran Jessica DiMascio and Jordana Henderson who finished in 148th and 155th places out of 187 runners in the race. DiMascio had a time of 24:09.0 while Henderson crossed the finish line in a time of 24:57.2. Losing only one graduating senior and with a host of players gaining valuable experience during the year, the Triton women’s cross country team will be looking to recapture the CCAA Title and continue their string of National Championship appearances in 2007.

In fact, UCSD has surpassed all expectations in Division II, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001, and finishing in the top-10 of the Director’s Cup standings in four of its first five seasons. Edwards’ move to UC San Diego represented a homecoming, as he had previously served as Associate Athletic Director at UCSD from 1987 to 1993. He then took a position as Director of Athletics at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. During his seven-year tenure at the NCAA Division II institution, he served on numerous NCAA committees, including a 1999 appointment to the Division II Management Council. Edwards is also currently a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee. Edwards is a 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a master’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts. In addition to East Stroudsburg, he has athletic administration experience at UMass, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, Drexel University and UC San Diego. While previously serving at UCSD, Edwards initiated the Triton Athletic Associates, the athletic department’s primary fund-raising source. Edwards now presides over a UC San Diego program which is recognized nationally for both its athletic and academic achievements.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE / SPORTS MEDICINE UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletic department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports. The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are monitored and planned out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics. Mamula represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room that is over 12,000 square feet in size with state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the studentathlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletic Department as one of the premier intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation. From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.
