Head Coach 29th Season

Harper

In his 28 years as UCSD water polo coach, Denny Harper has established one of the top programs in the country. For the second year in a row in 2006, the Tritons set a program record in wins, completing a 26-6season with their 14th WWPA title and a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championship tournament. Harper was named the ACWP DII Coach of the Year, the third time he has earned the honor since 2000.

Additionally in 2006, Ty Lackey finished up his Triton career being named to the ACWP All-American Division I team and a national finalist for the Peter J. Cutino National Player of the Year Award.

In 2005, UCSD won what was a school record 24 times. With multiple victories against Division I schools in Long Beach State, UC Davis, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, Saint Francis and a total of 19 victories against ranked opponents, UCSD climbed as high as No. 5 in the national polls and finished the season with a No. 10 national ranking.

In 2004 the Tritons had several young players gain valuable experience with only one graduating senior. While the Tritons fell short in their quest for their 14th Western Water Polo Association title, they had several wins over division I powers including Long Beach State, UC Davis, Loyola Marymount and UC Santa Barbara. Harper was named the 2004 CWPA division II Coach of the Year after leading the Tritons to their third 20 win season in the past five years. It was the second Coach of the Year (2000, 2004) honor at the division II level for Harper.

One of serveral highlights occured in 2000, when the Tritons defeated USC, 9-8, in a national semifinal in Malibu to become the first non-Division I team to play in the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship Game. The Tritons have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in nine of the past 13 seasons, finishing second for the first time ever in 2000, third in 1995 and 1998, fourth in 1999 and 2002 and sixth three times. The 2002 squad went 19-13 and earned its ninth NCAA berth by winning its 13th WWPA title at home inside Canyonview Pool. In 1995, Harper’s Tritons became the first Division III team to advance to the NCAA Water Polo Final Four, repeating the feat in 1998 and at Canyonview in 1999.

Under Harper’s direction, UCSD has dominated the Western Water Polo Association since the league began sponsoring championships in 1981. In 24 seasons, the Tritons have captured 13 titles and eight runner-up trophies.

Harper has been honored as WWPA Coach of the Year 14 times, including in 2002.

UCSD has been consistently ranked among the top 12 teams in the NCAA rankings, including reaching as high as No. 3 in the nation in 2006, after an upset win over UCLA. At the 2008 FINA Masters World Championships in Perth Australia, Harper guided the San Francisco Olympic Club’s 45+ team to the silver medal, loosing the championship game to the same Russian squad that won the 1980 Olympics. The 40+ squad won the Bronze medal, and the 30+ team won the Gold medal.

Harper concluded an outstanding tenure as coach of the UCSD women’s water polo team in 1999, winning five USA Water Polo crowns, one national runner-up effort and two national third-place trophies. He has also coached the highly-successful Sunset San Diego club teams, leading the men’s team to three Indoor National Championships and the Sunset women’s team to eight national titles. The coach also led the UCSD men into the Guiness Book of Records when his squad played 26 continuous hours of water polo on April 7-8, 1989. Harper, a 1978 graduate of San Diego State University, began coaching at Rancho Alamitos and Indio High Schools, and at San Diego State before coming to UC San Diego.

Kreutzkamp

Associate Head Coach 10th Season

Brad Kreutzkamp begins his10th season with the Triton men’s team. After serving seven years as an assistant coach, Kreutzkamp was promoted to Associate Head Coach before the 2006 season. Before coming to UCSD, Kreutzkamp was head coach at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego for two years, followed by two years as head coach at Grossmont High School.

While at Patrick Henry, he led the girl’s team to the inaugural San Diego CIF Championship, earning Coach of the Year honors in the process. He also served as co-coach of the highly-successful Sunset club team, winning three silver and three bronze medals at the National Junior Olympic Tournament. Kreutzkamp assisted with the Triton women’s team in 1998 and is also now the Internal Operations Assistant for the department.

Kreutzkamp played on back-to-back CIF championship teams at Costa Mesa High School. He later attended Orange Coast, Grossmont and San Diego State University.

Glen

Assistant Coach 3rd Season

Busch

Glenn Busch is in his third season as an assistant coach for the men’s water polo team at UC San Diego. Glenn played on the UCSD men’s water polo team from 1997-2000 and earned All-WWPA honors twice and was named an All-American his senior season. Glenn made the crucial save to seal the upset win over USC in the 2000 National Championship Semi-Final game advancing UCSD to its first ever National Championship game appearance.

Before joining the coaching staff at UCSD, Glenn spent six seasons at Torrey Pines High School as the boy’s water polo junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach. He helped the school reach three consecutive San Diego Section CIF Division 1 Championship games.

Glenn graduated from UCSD with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience. He also obtained his Masters in Educational Sciences from UCSD.

HIGH SCHOOL: Local product attended University High School where he earned All-League and All-CIF honors in his last two seasons... named the team’s offensive MVP in his junior year, and team MVP his senior season after netting 102 goals.

AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2005: Jerkovic scored 38 goals with 34 assists and 31 steals in 123 quarters... one of two returning players with at least 38 goals during the year.

AS A FRESHMAN IN 2004: Finished the 2004 season tied for the team lead with 48 goals as a freshman... also tied for the team lead with 51 steals... led the team with 42 assists.

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Palm Desert High School were he was a member of the water polo, basketball, and swim teams... high school water polo team won four league championships, going undefeated each season... earned All-League MVP honors twice, the 2003-04 Inland Empire MVP, and was All-CIF First-Team for three years... finished his career in the Desert Valley League as the all-time leader in goals.

Triton teams have captured 29 National Championships while 36 teams have finished as National Runners-Up. 38 others have achieved National Third Place honors.

Individually, 117 Triton student-athletes have captured National Championships and a remarkable 900 student-athletes have been named to All-America teams.

UCSD student-athletes have excelled academically as well, earning 23 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 130 Academic All-America selections. Consistently, over 55 percent of the student-athletes earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, placing them on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Triton Athletics posted a Second Place Finish in the USSA Director’s Cup, emblamatic of the best overall athletics department in the country, during the 2006-07 season. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2000, UCSD has placed in the top six programs in the country on six different occasions. As a D-III member, the Tritons finished first in the Director’s Cup standings following the 1997-98 season.

UCSD captured Back-To-Back California CollegiateAthleticAssociation Commissioner’s Cup titles in 2005-06 and 2006-07, an award symbolizing the best overall athletics department in the CCAA.

Earl W. Edwards - Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March, 2000.

Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a successful transition from the NCAA Division III to Division II. In fact, UCSD has surpassed all expectations in Division II, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001, and finishing in the top-10 of the Director’s Cup standings in four of its first five seasons.

Edwards’ move to UC San Diego represented a homecoming, as he had previously served as Associate Athletic Director at UCSD from 1987 to 1993. He then took a position as Director of Athletics at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. During his seven-year tenure at the NCAA Division II institution, he served on numerous NCAA committees, including a 1999 appointment to the Division II Management Council. Edwards is also currently a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee.

Edwards is a 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a master’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts. In addition to East Stroudsburg, he has athletic administration experience at UMass, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, Drexel University and UC San Diego. While previously serving at UCSD, Edwards initiated the Triton Athletic Associates, the athletic department’s primary fund-raising source. Edwards now presides over a UC San Diego program which is recognized nationally for both its athletic and academic achievements.

CANYONVIEW AQUATIC CENTER UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Located on the eastern end of campus, between Eleanor Roosevelt College and Warren College, the Canyonview Aquatic Center features two outdoor, Olympic-Size Pools, which can be divided into 8 lanes of 50 meters in length or 19 lanes of 25 yards in length. The west pool is home to the UCSD men’s and women’s water polo teams, as well as the men’s and women’s swimming teams. The east pool is used for recreational swimmers in addition to the UCSD men’s and women’s diving teams who practice and compete while the diving boards and platforms used by the UCSD Diving Teams are located in the complex on the east side.

RIMAC ARENA UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

The Recreation, IntraMural, Athletic Complex (RIMAC) is the cornerstone of the UCSD sports facilities. This nearly 200,000 square foot facility is located just south of the 12-acre North Campus Recreation Area Field on the northwest corner of the campus. Opened in January 1995, RIMAC is a multi-purpose facility with the most advanced forms of quality control, state-of-the-art equipment and a strong staff commitment to customer service. Every room in RIMAC is climate controlled and many of the spaces feature an abundance of natural lighting. RIMAC houses the offices of the Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreation and Sports Facilities departments. RIMAC also features a variety of recreational, educational, and meeting spaces which can accommodate a variety of activities.

The RIMAC Arena is a multi-use facility capable of accommodating a wide variety of activities ranging from large spectator events including ceremonies and concerts to athletic competitions and tournaments. The 44,000 square foot floor is also capable of accommodating large floor exhibits. The Arena Floor is spring loaded employing the use of Robbins Bio-Cushion I and is curtain divisible for multi-sport use in basketball (total of five courts), volleyball, and badminton. The arena is furnished with 10 retractable glass basketball backboards, and floor plates and sleeves for volleyball and badminton. Employing the use of telescopic bleachers and floor seats, the RIMAC Arena may accommodate up to 5,000 people.

RIMAC is home to the UCSD men and women’s basketball teams along with the men and women’s volleyball squads. Over 50 home athletic events are contested in RIMAC every year, and with entusiastic support from both the campus and surrounding communities, the Tritons truly enjoy a home court advantage. Both of the basketball and volleyball teams utilize the main court for both practice and games, while the auxiliary courts, which are located on the third floor, are used only for practices.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area.

In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years.

Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met.

Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents.

In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005.

Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE / SPORTS MEDICINE UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletic department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.

The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are monitored and planned out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics. Mamula represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room that is over 12,000 square feet in size with state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the studentathlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletic Department as one of the premier intercollegiate programs in the country.

The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists.

The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation.

From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

UCSD: ACADEMIC RANKINGS The National Research Council ranks UCSD 10th in the nation in the quality of its faculty and graduate programs. (The top ten, in rank order, are: UC Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, CalTech, Yale, Chicago, Cornell and UCSD.) The NRC ranks oceanography and neurosciences 1st in the nation.

UCSD ranks 6th in the nation in National Academy of Sciences membership while also being ranked as the 7th best public university in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report.

A U.S. News and World Report survey of graduate programs ranks the Jacobs School of Engineering 13th in the nation and 7th among public engineering schools, and the School of Medicine as 17th among medical schools with a research focus, and 6th among public schools. In Master of Fine Arts programs, UCSD’s multimedia/visual communications program ranked 6th in the nation.

Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s first neighborhoods to be settled. TRITON BASEBALL FIELD UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

The UC San Diego Baseball Facility has one of the premiere playing surfaces in all of San Diego County. The facility is located on the east side of campus off of Voigt Drive, across the street from Scripps Memorial Hospital.

Features include: • Two covered dugouts (with lighting and power) • Scoreboard (located in right center field) • Fenced batting cage with power available • Bleacher seating for approx. 1,200 Field Dimensions from home plate to the fence: • Left Field - 330 ft.

• Right Field - 330 ft.

• Center Field - 400 ft.
