COACHING STAFF
2008 UC SAN DIEGO CROSS COUNTRY
nateGARCIA Head Coach UCSD, 2000 Second Season Nathan Garcia enters his second season as the UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross coun-
try head coach in 2008. He was elevated to the top spot on an interim basis on July 31, 2007 after the resignation of then-head coach and mentor Ted Van Arsdale, who had directed both squads for 15 years prior to his retirement. After a nationwide search following the 2007-2008 school year, Garcia was hired back in the same role as cross country head coach and assistant coach for the track and field squad. In 2007, Garcia guided both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Division II National Championships, marking just the second time UCSD has accomplished that feat at the D-II level. The women’s team finished 11th at the championships, having moved up five places from a 16th place finish in 2006. The men finished in 20th spot, marking their best season since 2003. Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude. He then completed a multi-subject professional clear CLAD credential at UCSD in 2001. In the fall of 2001, Garcia began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant alongside Van Arsdale. Garcia was a four-year athlete in both track and cross country while attending UCSD from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a Triton, he earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including Verizon All-Academic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 200001. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year.
lindsaySTALKER Assistant Coach UCSD, 2005 Second Season E
ntering her second season as an assistant coach with UCSD’s cross country program’s is another former Triton in Lindsay Stalker. Stalker returns to the sidelines after helping guide both the men’s and women’s program’s to the NCAA Division II National Championships in first season in 2007. A native of Corona, Calif., Stalker was a four-year letterwinner at UCSD from 2001-04. She earned All-CCAA honors after crossing the line with a personal best time of 22:24 at the league championships in 2003, helping the team to a second place finish. As a senior Stalker had an impressive showing at the D-II West Regional, leading the squad to a second place finish after posting a time of 23:43. She earned All-West Region recognition for her performance and the Tritons advanced to the National Championships in Evansville, Ind., where they finished 17th. Stalker was also a two-time All-American in track and field in the 800 and 1500m. She graduated from UCSD in 2005 with a degree in human development.

2007 MEN’S YEAR IN REVIEW
2008 UC SAN DIEGO CROSS COUNTRY In his first season as the head coach at UC San Diego, Nate Garcia led the men’s cross country team to a berth in the NCAA National Championships for the first time since 2003. It marked just the second time in program history that the men and women squads both qualified at the Division II level in the same season. After grabbing the final West Regional qualifying spot, the men’s team finished 20th overall at the NCAAs. When longtime coach Ted Van Arsdale announced his retirement on the morning of July 31, 2007, Garcia was hired as his successor later that afternoon. The new head coach took the reins of the program for which he had been associated with for 10 seasons -- five years as a student-athlete and the previous five as an assistant coach with both the cross country and track and field programs at UCSD. In his 15 years as head coach, Van Arsdale established the program as a perennial powerhouse at both the D-II and D-III levels. During the 2007 season, Garcia aimed to build on the success of his mentor. The Tritons opened up their schedule on Aug. 25 with a dual meet at home against Point Loma Nazarene University. UCSD had five of the top seven finishers, cruising to a 15-point victory. Daniel Anderson was the top overall finisher on the men’s side, breaking the tape in the four-mile race with a time of 22:22.9 while Kevin Klein and Jake LeVieux were the next two fastest UCSD runners, finishing in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with their times of 23:01.6 and 23:14.4. Timur Crone and Gabe LaMothe rounded out the Tritons who scored on the day, finishing sixth and seventh with times of 23:17.4 and 23:18.1. Two weeks later, UCSD competed in the UC Irvine Invitational and claimed 6th place out of the 20-team field. LeVieux put in another strong performance, placing 22nd with a time of 25:33.0, while Lamothe finished with a time of 25:57.10, good enough for 33rd. The Tritons found success the next weekend at the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo., finishing 11th out of 36 squads. The top five UCSD finishers were all juniors, led by Klein and LaMothe, who crossed the finish lines with times of 25:36 and 25:41, respectively, placing 36th and 40th on the day. Greg Geldman, Matthew Noble, and Crone were the next three fastest finishers for the Tritons, posting times of 25:59, 26:26 and 26:32. Geldman’s time was good enough for 60th place individually, while Noble was the 99th fastest runner on the day, seven spots ahead of Crone.
Kevin Klein (right) and Jake LeVieux had strong performances for first-year head coach Nate Garcia in 2007.
At the Bob Firman Invitational in Boise, Idaho, on Sept. 22, UCSD took 5th out of 11 teams with a score of 127. Anderson and Morrill -- a member of the 2006 NCAA Division II All-West Region squad -- were the top two finishers, placing 17th and 25th overall with respective times of 26:05.33 and 26:15.26. LeVieux was next, finishing just one spot behind Morrill with a time of 26:16.93, while Ryan Becijos finished in 31st place at 26:27.38. Mike Wright concluded the UCSD scoring at the meet with a 37th place showing. After a week off, Garcia’s squads hosted the Triton Classic Invitational on Oct. 6. The UCSD men put together an impressive second-place performance with 75 points, 55 behind top finisher UCLA. Anderson was the top Triton finisher, placing 7th overall with a time of 33:50.5. At the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Turlock, Calif. on Oct. 20, the Tritons finished in third place for the second year in a row. Anderson was the top finisher for UCSD, finishing 13th overall with a time of 25:40.70. He crossed the finish line just ahead of teammate LeVieux, whose time of 24:45.10 put him in 14th place. Anderson and LeVieux both earned All-CCAA honors for their efforts. Lamothe, Klein and Max Mullender, the 2006 CCAA Freshman of the Year, rounded out the Tritons’ scoring, finishing 18th, 19th, and 20th, respectively. Returning to Boise, Idaho, for the West Regionals, the Tritons put together impressive team performances on the Eagle River State Park cross country course. UCSD finished third to grab the final qualifying spot in the NCAA National Championships. All five of the Tritons’ scorers finished in the top-31, led by Morrill, who finished 24th overall with a time of 31:44.53 on the 10k course. Klein and Geldman finished back-to-back at 27th and 28th, while Anderson and Mullender crossed the finish line 30th and 31st. As team, UCSD compiled a score of 135, just five points ahead of Western Oregon, who was left on the outside looking in for nationals. Chico State was the West Region champion, finishing with 39 points, while Western Washington finished second with 93 points. The NCAA Division II National Championships were held two weeks later in Joplin, Mo. The Triton men finished 20th overall while Abilene Christian claimed the National Championship at the 10k race. Morrill had an impressive showing, leading the UCSD squad with a time of 32:52.7. Geldman was the next Triton to finish, placing 102nd overall with a time of 32:58.5. Garcia lost just two runners at the end of the season to graduation and returns 13 letterwinners for what should be an improved men’s squad in 2008.

2007 WOMEN’S YEAR IN REVIEW 2008 UC SAN DIEGO CROSS COUNTRY
After Ted Van Arsdale retired in July 2007 and handed the coaching reins to his assistant, Nate Garcia, the new leader managed to build on the past success of the women’s cross country team. In his inaugural campaign, Garcia led the squad to its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Championships, marking just the second time in program history at the D-II level that the men and women squads qualified for the National Meet together. The Tritons began their season on Aug. 25 with a home meet against Point Loma Nazarene University. Ranked 14th nationally to start the year, UCSD had only three of the top eight runners to cross the finish line and came in second place, nine points behind the Sea Lions. PLNU had the top two times, as well as the fifth, seventh, and eighth place finishers. The top finisher for the Tritons on the 6k course was senior Diane Dunn, who crossed the finish line with a time of 15:49.5, good enough for third place. Amanda Burkhardt finished in fourth place at 15:51.8, while Emily McGregor finished sixth with a time of 15:53.0. Two weeks after the loss to the Sea Lions, the Tritons rebounded with strong performances at the UC Irvine Invitational. UCSD placed 5th out of 12 teams as McGregor and Dunn led the Tritons with 7th and 12th place finishes, respectively. McGregor’s time of 18:24.0 was the fastest of any non-Division I student-athlete and just 5.7 seconds ahead of Dunn. Climbing to No. 13 in the national poll, UCSD competed next at the Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. a week later. The Tritons finished 3rd out of 37 teams, just behind the University of Tulsa and host Missouri Southern State. The senior trio of Dunn, McGregor and Burkhardt again paced the UCSD women, finishing as the top three runners on the team and the 9th, 15th and 24th fastest overall, respectively. At the Bob Firman Invitational in Boise, Idaho, on Sept. 22, Dunn came up with the best performance of the day as the Tritons went on to place 4th of 13 teams with a score of 158. Crossing the line with a time of 18:16.93, Dunn finished 3rd overall out of 124 individual runners. Jessica DiMascio was the next fastest UCSD runner, finishing 37th overall with a time of 19:52.58.
Senior Diane Dunn paced the Tritons six times in their eight meets in 2007. She finished second among UCSD’s runners in the other two.
The following weekend, Garcia’s squads came home to host the Triton Classic Invitational. Entering the meet with a No. 10 national ranking, UCSD claimed the 5th spot out of 10 teams competing as McGregor and Dunn continued to the lead the squad out front. They finished 8th and 15th, respectively, out of 119 totall runners. McGregor’s time of 22:53.2 was just over 24 seconds faster than Dunn, who posted a time of 23:17.6. Competing at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Turlock on Oct. 20, the Tritons took third place for the second consecutive season just like their male counterparts. Dunn was the second fastest individual runner in the meet, crossing the finish line of the 6k course in a time of 21:01.90, just 6.5 seconds behind Cal State L.A.’s Karla Alburez, who’s victory paved the way for a Golden Eagle overall team title. McGregor, Burkhardt, and Ashleigh Montgomery were the next three fastest UCSD runners on the day, each earning All-CCAA honors for their 12th, 13th and 15th respective finishes. Returning to Boise, Idaho, for the West Region Championships two weeks later, the Tritons put together a strong race on the Eagle River State Park course and grabbed the fourth and final spot at nationals with their team total of 125. Dunn, an All-CCAA honoree, placed 7th with a time of 21:04 to earn All-West Region honors. McGregor was next for UCSD, finishing 17th with a time of 21:26. Montgomery finished 27th individually as she crossed the finish line in a time of 21:49, while Burkhardt and Jessie Bodenhamer were the final two Triton women to post scores for the team, finishing 34th and 40th, respectively. Burkhardt finished in a time of 22:02 while Bodenhamer, the CCAA Freshman of the Year, posted a time of 22:15. At the NCAA Division II National Championships in Joplin, Mo. on Nov. 17, the UCSD women’s cross country team posted an 11th place finish, five spots higher than where it rang in in 2006. McGregor led the Tritons with her 31st individual finish with a time of 21:38.0, while Dunn trailed closely behind, finishing 36th at 21:47.3. Burkhardt was the next highest UCSD finisher with a time of 22:37.4, good enough for 85th place overall. All four teams from the West Region finished in the top-11 of the 6k race. West Region champion Seattle Pacific finished as the National Runners-Up to Adams State, while Chico State finished 4th, one spot ahead of Cal State L.A. Garcia lost three of his top performers in Dunn, McGregor, and Burkhardt to graduation at the end of the year but returns 13 talented runners in 2008. The Tritons will be aiming for a berth in the NCAA National Championships for the seventh consecutive season.

Earl W. Edwards - Director of Athletics Earl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001. Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those finishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won three straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess. Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. He has published several articles in Athletic Management and was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue. In 2007 he was selected Athletic Director of the Year for the West Region by the NACDA. A 1972 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He then went on to receive his masters in Sports Administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1973. In addition to working as athletics director at East Stroudsburg University and UC San Diego, he has athletics administration experience at the University of Massachusetts, UC Davis, the University of Michigan, and Drexel University.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS The University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD studentathletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per studentathlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season studentathletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.

ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE / SPORTS MEDICINE UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS
Two integral parts of the UC San Diego athletic department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports. The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are monitored and planned out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics. Mamula represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room that is over 12,000 square feet in size with state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletic Department as one of the premier intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is the hub for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athleticrelated injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation. From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

SAN DIEGO - AMERICA’S FINEST CITY UC SAN DIEGO INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS The UCSD campus is located in La Jolla, Calif., just minutes north of America’s sixth largest city, San Diego. Spanish for ‘the jewel’, La Jolla is one of San Diego’s first neighborhoods to be settled. The city of La Jolla has spectacular beaches and park areas that are popular for great diving, swimming, surfing, hiking, romantic sunset strolls, and family fun. La Jolla’s village area boasts a beautiful Mediterranean charm and a cool Southern Californian vibe, and rolls out the red carpet when it comes to it’s fine dining, theatre, cultural activities, boutique shopping, art galleries and fine lodging establishments. It is no wonder why La Jolla’s Prospect Street was dubbed ‘San Diego’s Rodeo Drive’. Named “America’s Finest City” due to its hospitality, beauty and ideal climate, San Diego is located at the southern tip of California, just north of Mexico. The residents of San Diego county are so physically active that Sports Illustrated magazine once called it “Sportstown, U.S.A.” San Diego’s 70 miles of beaches are a haven for swimmers, surfers, divers, boaters and sunbathers. The city of San Diego is a major commercial business center with more than 2.6 million residents and a varied economy based in agriculture, manufacturing, aerospace, technology, electronics, aircraft, ship-building, scientific research and tourism. The city is one of the largest biotech centers in the U.S.
