BYU-Hawaii in the West Regional by a 5-0 score. In the round of 16, the Tritons were edged by Drury by a 5-2 score. The doubles tandems of Eric Rubens and Alex Placek and Bijan Moallemi and Erik Elliott both earned points for UCSD.
E
ric Steidlmayer, a UC San Diego graduate, begins his 12th season as head coach of the Tritons’ men’s tennis team in 2009-10. Regarded as one of the best tennis teachers in the country, Steidlmayer’s passion for the game and his competitive nature are evidenced by his team’s tenacity and fiery perseverance. During his first 11 seasons on the La Jolla campus, Steidlmayer has amassed a .612 winning percentage, posting 137 wins through the first 224 matches of his coaching career. The Tritons made their 10th straight playoff appearance under Steidlmayer’s watch in 2009, finishing the season with a 12-11 overall record. UCSD’s regular season ended on a high note, with a 5-4 upset of UC Santa Cruz. Steidlmayer’s team ended up earning the No. 4 seed in the West Regional and falling to top seeded Hawaii Pacific, but not before Samuel Ling and Naveen Dixit recorded a win in doubles competition. In 2008, the Tritons advanced to the NCAA D-II National Championships after defeating
6
In 2007, the UCSD had its best-ever national finish, completing a season in which it finished third nationally and posted an 18-7 overall record. UCSD defeated Northwest Missouri State in the Round of 16 by a 5-0 score before disposing of 8th-ranked Barry University in the National Quarterfinals by a 5-2 margin. The team’s season came to an end in the National Semifinals, but not before a fight, as the Tritons played No. 5 Valdosta State very competitively before falling by a 5-1 score. The 18 wins during the ‘07 campaign included four over NCAA D-I opponents and another two against UC Santa Cruz, the NCAA D-III National Champion, and Azusa Pacific, the NAIA Division I National Runners-Up. Additionally, juniors Blake Meister and Eric Rubens were honored as ITA All-Americans after posting a 19-4 record together at the top spot on the doubles ladder. A 14-10 record in 2005-06 in which the squad qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament, advancing all the way to the Sweet Sixteen before falling to Lynn University by a narrow 5-3 margin. Lynn was the 2006 NCAA D-II National Runner-Up. Without enough teams in the West Region, Steidlmayer’s squad plays with no conference affiliation during the year, forcing the Tritons to play one of the toughest Division II schedules in the country on an annual basis. In 2006 alone, Steidlmayer’s squad played 11 matches against NCAA Division I schools. His team notched an 8-1 record against D-II institutions during
l

that campaign. Steidlmayer guided the Tritons to a 15-7 record in 2004-05, once again qualifying for the NCAA postseason. The team won its first three tournament matches and advanced to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals. UCSD finished in fifth place overall after losing to Armstrong Atlantic State, who finished the year ranked No. 2 in the ITA poll. Steidlmayer’s squad posted a record of 18-10 in 2003-04, qualifying for the NCAA Division II Regionals for the fourth-straight year after the move up from Division III in 2000. It was the fifthstraight postseason appearance for the Tritons. After the team’s 12-11 record in 2008-09, Steidlmayer’s all-time coaching mark improved to 137-87, building upon his mark as the winningest men’s tennis coach in UCSD history. His win percentage of .612 is the best number in the UCSD men’s tennis annals for coaches who were on the La Jolla campus for more than one season. A 1996 UC San Diego graduate who played for three years on the Triton tennis team, Steidlmayer served for two seasons as assistant tennis coach at UC Davis prior to returning to La Jolla. He also earned a master’s degree in Economics from UC Davis in the fall of 1998. While attending UCSD, Steidlmayer was named the Tritons’ Most Valuable Player after helping them earn a berth in the 1996 Division III National Championships. Widely respected for his coaching prowess, Steidlmayer also serves the NCAA tennis community by serving on the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship committee. He also served as the Chairman for the Championship Committee during the 2007-08 season.

L
iz LaPlante completed her 30th season at the helm of the UC San Diego women’s tennis team in 2009. It was LaPlante’s ninth year at the NCAA Division II level after 21 seasons during which she became the most successful coach in Division III women’s tennis history. Her teams qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships a total of 19 times, winning four national titles, finishing second on five other occasions. The Tritons also placed third nationally three times while at the D-III level. During her 30 years on the La Jolla campus, LaPlante has amassed a .706 winning percentage with her 469-195 overall record. She has posted double digit victories in all but three of her 30 campaigns at the helm, and has notched winning seasons in all but one. Only twice in her career has she ever had a team with double digit losses while recording 20 or more wins on four different occasions. LaPlante was recognized in 2009 as Coach of the Year by both the California Collegiate Athletic Association and Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Region after leading the Tritons to their sixth-straight undefeated CCAA Championship season. Under LaPlante’s tutelage, UCSD recorded wins against Hawaii Pacific, the University of Hawai’i Hilo, No. 17 Florida Southern, No.

through the NCAA brackets came to an end in the Elite Eight as the Tritons fell to Armstrong Atlantic State University. The team ended the year with a 20-4 overall record, including LaPlante’s 400th career win, its best mark since the 23-4 campaign in 2002.
The 2008 season was another banner year for the women’s tennis program as LaPlante guided the Tritons to their 5th-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association title. The team posted a 14-11 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in CCAA play. The undefeated league campaign ran the Tritons’ win streak up to 50-straight in CCAA action. LaPlante earned her 5th-straight CCAA Coach of the Year award while also placing five of her student-athletes on the All-CCAA Team.
2004 marked a season of firsts for the Tritons at the Division II level, going a perfect 8-0 in league play and winning their first CCAA Championship. Coach LaPlante guided her squad to an 18-9 overall record and a final ranking of No. 15 in the country following her team’s advancement to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to the team’s success during the regular season, LaPlante also guided her squad to the NCAA postseason for the 27th-straight season. The Tritons won their first round matchup, defeating Cal Poly Pomona by a 5-0 margin before traveling to BYU-Hawaii and losing in the second round by a 5-0 score. In 2006 LaPlante directed her squad to a 3rd-straight CCAA Championship and amassed a 14-8 overall record and advanced to the second round NCAA D-II Tournament before being ousted by Hawaii Hilo in a narrow 5-4 decision. UCSD placed four student-athletes on the All-CCAA teams while LaPlante earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors for the 3rd-straight year. The 2005 campaign marked the secondstraight season that the Tritons went undefeated in conference play, winning its second league title in as many years in the process. The CCAA title led to another NCAA Championship appearance in which the Tritons won the NCAA West Regional at home and moved on to the round of 16 in Florida. While in Florida, UCSD won its round of 16 match and advanced on to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2002. The run
In the 2003 season, UCSD finished with an overall record of 17-6 and a final ITA national ranking of 19th in Division II. The Tritons were a near-perfect 7-1 in conference play, finishing as runner-up at the CCAA Championship for the third year in a row. Three Tritons were named to the All-CCAA Second Team. Following an opening-round win over Hawaii-Hilo, the Tritons lost to eventual repeat national champion BYU-Hawaii on the road in an NCAA Division II Second Round match in Laie, Hawaii, to conclude the season. Since LaPlante took over the program in 1980, 29 Tritons have earned All-American honors, and she was honored for her achievements as the NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade in 1991, as well as earning ITA Division III Coach of the Year honors in 2000. LaPlante has served as a member of the Western Region Ranking Committee since 1981, and has also been on the ITA National Ranking Committee and the NCAA National Subcommittee, which governs the national championships for men’s and women’s tennis. La Plante graduated from San Diego State University in 1979, and played varsity tennis for three years as an undergraduate. Prior to that, she was one of the top junior players in San Diego County and currently plays club tennis.

E
arl Edwards accepted the position of Director of Athletics at UC San Diego in March 2000. Since his arrival, the UC San Diego athletics department has been nationally recognized for its academic and athletic achievements on numerous occasions. Under his guidance, the 23-sport program has made a very successful transition from the NCAA Division III ranks to Division II. In fact, UC San Diego has surpassed all expectations at the D-II level, capturing women’s soccer national championships in both 2000 and 2001. Since moving to Division II in 2000, UC San Diego has been ranked among the top six programs in the country on seven different occasions. In two of those finishes, UCSD was the national runner up. UC San Diego also won four straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Commissioners Cup titles in 200506, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09, an award that recognizes the best overall athletics program in the conference. In 2008, UC San Diego was ranked No. 1 in Division II and No. 20 overall in the National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) Collegiate Power Rankings, which comprehensively measures student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess. Edwards has served on many regional and national committees and organizations. Currently, he serves on the Executive Council for the CCAA and he served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) from 2003-07. Edwards was the president of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) and has severed on numerous other NCAA committees, including the Division II Management Council, the Division II Championships and Minority Opportunities and Interest, the Walter Byers Scholarship and Committee for Women’s Athletics. ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE
T
wo integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports.
The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation. From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
T
he University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.
