NCAA Committee Comes Calling After advancing to a 10th straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships Tournament last week, the UC San Diego women’s soccer team received an at-large bid into the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship field of 48. As the second seed and one of two host sites in the West Region, the Tritons (14-5-1) earn a first-round bye and await the winner of No. 3 Seattle Pacific and No. 6 seed Chico State. SPU and CSUC will play each other Thursday at 7 p.m. on Triton Soccer Field, with the winner returning to the same field to take on UCSD at 7 p.m. Saturday in second-round action. November to Remember? This week will mark UCSD’s 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 24 years, combining the Division II and III levels. The Tritons are 12-5-2 all-time in the D-II Soccer Championships with two national titles. UCSD won back-to-back championships in the program’s first seasons at the Division II level, defeating Northern Kentucky 2-0 in 2000 and besting Christian Brothers by the same count in 2001. The Tritons won five national championships in D-III. Scouting the Falcons Defending national champion Seattle Pacific (16-3-1) is making its seventh straight NCAA postseason appearance this fall. The Falcons started 2009 with 10 straight wins and in spite of a small rough patch toward the end of October, they closed out the regular season with November wins over Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene to secure the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. The Tritons and Falcons have met on three occasions, all in second-round regional action. The most recent match between the two squads was on Nov. 15, 2008, on the SPU campus. The Falcons left victorious, 3-1, while outshooting the Tritons 26-6. In the 2006 tournament at UCSD, the Tritons topped the Falcons 3-0 behind goals from Caitlin Ryan, Megan Dickey and Kelly Cochran. The first-ever meeting between UCSD and SPU came on Nov. 12, 2005, a 2-0 Falcons’ home win. Scouting the Wildcats Making its fourth NCAA postseason appearance in the past six years, Chico State (8-5-8) has yet to advance past the first round in its tournament history. Similarly to the Tritons, the Wildcats bowed out of the CCAA Tournament in the first round with a 1-0 loss to Cal State L.A. CSUC now turns its attention to Seattle Pacific of the GNAC for Thursday’s match, the second meeting of the year between the two teams. The Falcons edged the Wildcats on Sept. 8 on the campus of Chico State in a non-conference contest. In regards to a potential matchup on Saturday with UCSD, the Wildcats are 4-7 all-time against the Tritons. UCSD lost to CSUC on the road Sept. 20, 2-0, behind a pair of goals from Lisa Webster in a stretch of under two minutes. The Wildcats and Tritons have met twice in the CCAA Tournament, both UCSD wins, but never before in the NCAA postseason. Tritons vs. Tournament Field UC San Diego played a total of seven matches against squads that qualified for the 2009 Soccer Championships, posting a record of 2-4-1 in those contests. The Tritons went 1-1-1 against No. 4 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills -- including the penalty kick shootoout that ended in the Toros’ favor last week in the CCAA Tournament -- and went 0-2 against No. 1 seed Cal State L.A. The Tritons defeated No. 5 seed Dixie State, 5-1, on Sept. 5 and lost to No. 6 seed Chico State, 2-0, on Sept. 20.

Head Coach Brian McManus
2009 marks Brian McManus’ 23rd season as head coach of the UC San Dieg women’s soccer team. Widely regarded as one of the best women’s soccer coaches at any collegiate level, McManus has racked up the thirdhighest win percentage in NCAA women’s soccer history, winning 84.5% of his games entering Thursday’s match. The storied coach has an all-time record of 384-58-30 in his 23 years on the La Jolla campus. Through 10 years of Division II and CCAA competition, McManus’ Tritons have won the CCAA South Division nine times and the CCAA Championship on five occassions. His squads have qualified for the NCAA Far West Region nine times and won two NCAA National Championships. Triton Soccer Stadium played host to the CCAA Championship and each round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001, with standing-room-only stadium record crowds for the National Semifinals and National Championship. McManus has led the Tritons to a total of five NCAA Division III National Championships, including a title in 1999, their final season at the Division III level. Under his direction in D-III, UCSD was the only team in the nation to participate in every NCAA Tournament since 1986. In all, the Tritons were crowned NCAA Regional Champions nine times. Remarkably, UCSD lost just one regular-season game to a Division III opponent in the school’s history. A three-time NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year honoree, McManus was the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 2001 and the West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2003. He has also received UCSD’s Excellence in Coaching Award a total of three times, in 2001, 1998 and 1996. McManus, who came to UCSD as an assistant coach in 1986, is a native of Scotland. He played professionally for Raith Rovers and Aberdeen and spent 11 years as a semi-professional player and coach. He also coached semi-pro soccer in Los Angeles, and previously coached the boy’s team at Torrey Pines High School in La Jolla. Tritons Well-Represented On All-CCAA Teams When the annual all-conference awards were announced last week, UCSD was well-represented once again. A total of seven Tritons were named to All-CCAA squads, highlighted by Kristin Armstrong, Lisa Bradley and Anne Wethe, all members of the conference’s First Team. Sarah McTigue, Jessica Wi and Shelby Wong earned AllCCAA Second Team honors while freshman defender Ellen Wilson was awarded an honorable mention.
The Right Balance Entering the NCAA postseason, the UCSD squad has positioned itself as one of offensive and defensive balance. The Tritons rank second in offense (38 scores) and second in defense (14 goals allowed) out of the CCAA teams. With 10 of UCSD’s 11 starters being freshmen and sophomores, the Tritons are poised to continue their conference success for years to come. In 2009, the UCSD lineup features five players with doubledigit points. Shelby Wong, having knocked in a hat trick against Central Washington, leads with the way with six goals and five assists on the season. Freshman Jessica Wi, a member of the All-CCAA Tournament Team, ranks second on the team in points with four goals and six assists. Finding Success on the Field and in the Classroom Sophomore defender Sara Spaventa was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, CoSida officials announced last week. A Santa Barbara native, Spaventa has started in each of UCSD’s 20 matches so far in 2009 and has bolstered a defense that has allowed 13 goals, which ranks as the secondlowest total in the CCAA. She tallied her first-career score on Oct. 19 in a road match with Cal State L.A. In 2008 Spaventa earned the starting nod in 21 of the Tritons’ 23 contests. Academically, Spaventa has amassed a grade-point average of 3.88 while majoring in Psychology at Muir College. Part Tactician, Part Captain, Complete Player Lisa Bradley, a junior out of Martinez, Calif., is one of three captains on UCSD’s 2009 squad. Taking a leadership role on the field, Bradley can be seen reorganizing the Tritons’ formation and playing the part of on-field tactitian and coach. This sort of contribution doesn’t translate to the box score - Bradley has three points in 2009 - but her well-rounded play and in-game prowess was recognized by the league’s coaches as she was named to the All-CCAA First Team last week. This year’s honor will add to her existing conference accomplishments - 2007 Freshman of the Year and 2008 All-CCAA Second Team. To the Winner the Spoils CCAA champion Cal State L.A. (17-2-2) drew the top seed in the West Region and will host a second-round game against the first-round winner between No. 4 Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-8-1) and No. 5 Dixie State (14-4). The two winning teams from the West Region will meet at the site of the higher seed for a third-round clash on Nov. 19 with the victor advancing to the Nov. 21 quarterfinals.
