NCAA Division II Tournament Third Round

NCAA TOURNAMENT Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. Triton Soccer Field at UC San Diego Weekend of Wins Less than 24 hours after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chico State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the UC San Diego women’s soccer team recorded another type of win - securing the right to host another weekend of November playoff soccer as a result of Cal State Dominguez Hills upending top-seeded Cal State L.A. In the 2003 season, the most recent occurence of the Tritons hosting at this stage of the tournament, UCSD topped Metro State 3-2 in the quarterfinal round at home before falling to Franklin Pierce in a 2-1 overtime decision in Virginia Beach, Va. November and December to Remember? In 2009, UCSD is making its 23rd NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 24 years, combining the Division II and III levels. Including last weekend’s win over Chico State, the Tritons are 15-5-2 all-time in the D-II Soccer Championships with two national titles. UCSD won back-toback championships in the program’s first seasons at the Division II level, defeating Northern Kentucky 2-0 in 2000 and besting Christian Brothers by the same count in 2001. The Tritons won five national championships in D-III. Scouting the Toros UCSD and CSUDH squared off twice in the 2009 regular season as the two squads traded 2-1 road wins. In the opening round of the conference tournament this year, the Toros advanced past the Tritons with a 5-3 shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw. Through the two regular season contests and the CCAA Tournament match, Tritons’ sophomore midfielder Anne Wethe has totaled one goal and two assists. On the Toros’ side, Jessica Murphy has knocked in two scores. In this Friday’s match the CSUDH squad will be without Murphy, as a result of the red card she received in the 80th minute of Sunday’s second-round contest with Cal State L.A. Making their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Toros are 9-2 on the road in 2009, outscoring opponents 18-8 through the 11 matches. Sophomore on Roster, Senior in Experience Sophomore Sarah McTigue, after scoring twice to lead the Tritons past Chico State last Saturday, now leads UCSD in NCAA postseason scoring with five points. Besides the two goals against the Wildcats, she earned her first career playoff point with an assist in the Tritons’ 1-0 win over BYU-Hawaii on Nov. 13, 2008, in the first round of last year’s tournament. McTigue’s heroics highlighted Saturday’s match as she helped even the match 1-1, less than two minutes after Chico State opened the contest with a score at the 22:06 mark. Her goal in the 86th minute, collecting a loose ball in the box and firing it to the right of the Wildcats’ netminder, held up as the game winner. Saturday’s performance by McTigue was her first career multi-goal game.

Head Coach Brian McManus

2009 marks Brian McManus’ 23rd season as head coach of the UC San Dieg women’s soccer team. Widely regarded as one of the best women’s soccer coaches at any collegiate level, McManus has racked up the fifthhighest win percentage in NCAA women’s soccer history, winning 84.6% of his games entering Thursday’s match. The storied coach has an all-time record of 385-58-30 in his 23 years on the La Jolla campus. Through 10 years of Division II and CCAA competition, McManus’ Tritons have won the CCAA South Division nine times and the CCAA Championship on five occassions. His squads have qualified for the NCAA Far West Region nine times and won two NCAA National Championships. Triton Soccer Stadium played host to the CCAA Championship and each round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001, with standing-room-only stadium record crowds for the National Semifinals and National Championship. McManus has led the Tritons to a total of five NCAA Division III National Championships, including a title in 1999, their final season at the Division III level. Under his direction in D-III, UCSD was the only team in the nation to participate in every NCAA Tournament since 1986. In all, the Tritons were crowned NCAA Regional Champions nine times. Remarkably, UCSD lost just one regular-season game to a Division III opponent in the school’s history. A three-time NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year honoree, McManus was the NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 2001 and the West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001 and 2003. He has also received UCSD’s Excellence in Coaching Award a total of three times, in 2001, 1998 and 1996. McManus, who came to UCSD as an assistant coach in 1986, is a native of Scotland. He played professionally for Raith Rovers and Aberdeen and spent 11 years as a semi-professional player and coach. He also coached semi-pro soccer in Los Angeles, and previously coached the boy’s team at Torrey Pines High School in La Jolla. Tritons Featured on All-West Region Teams Three UCSD players earned Daktronics/NCAA Division II All-West Region honors Tuesday, including sophomores Kristin Armstrong and Anne Wethe being selected to the First Team and freshman Ellen Wilson earning a spot on the Second Team. Stepping into the starting role this season, Armstrong has totaled 67 saves while posting six shutouts and leading the team in minutes played. Starting in every match so far, she has amassed 15 wins en route to being named the West Region’s top netminder. Wethe, a dynamic midfielder eager to make plays in the air and on the ground, has contributed as a leader on both ends of the field while adding 13 points on three goals and seven assists. Actively involved in the Tritons’ attack, Wethe has recorded four of her points this season against CSUDH. Wilson, having started all of UCSD’s 21 matches thus far, has played the second-most minutes on the team. As the center back for the Tritons’ defense, Wilson has guided the squad to a conference-low 15 goals allowed.

Small in Stature, Big in Heart Freshman Jessica Wi, the conference’s Co-Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-CCAA Tournament Team, ranks third on the team in points with four goals and seven assists. Her most recent point came when she assisted on McTigue’s game-tying score in the 24th minute of Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Chico State. Listed at 5-foot-1, Wi regularly dazzles the crowd and neutralizes the defense with her shifty ball-handling. A native of Oakland, Calif., she tallied her first career multi-goal game in the Sept. 16 match against Cal State East Bay, a homecoming of sorts. Rivaling McTigue for the Ms. November title, Wi has contributed a goal or assist in each of the last three matches. Home Cooking In the 2009 season, the Tritons have compiled a home record of 10-3. The 10 victories in La Jolla are the most for a UCSD squad since 2006, when the Tritons went 11-0-1 at home. This year, UCSD reeled off seven consecutive home wins between Sept. 13 and Oct. 25, during the heart of the CCAA schedule. In that span of matches the Tritons allowed just one score and the streak included four 1-0 decisions, against Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. More importantly, the UCSD squad is 12-1 all-time in NCAA D-II postseason matches at Triton Soccer Field. Sunshine State to Summon Sunday’s Winner Sunday’s quarterfinal match between the West and South Central regions’ top teams will decide which squad advances to the Final Four held at the University of Tampa’s Pepin Stadium from Dec. 3-5. The Tampa facility, with a 1,500-seat capacity grandstand, has hosted five NCAA National Championships, including the 2008 and 2009 men’s and women’s championships.
