NATE

GARCIA Head Coach Fourth Season UC San Diego, 2000 N

athan Garcia enters his fourth season as head coach of the UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country program in 2010. In three years at the helm, Garcia has guided the Tritons to a pair of NCAA National Championship appearances, while also coaching several All-CCAA and all-region selections. Garcia took over head coaching duties for both programs in 2007 after the resignation of longtime coach and mentor Ted Van Arsdale. He served as an assistant under Van Arsdale for five seasons prior to his appointment to the top spot. In addition to leading the cross country teams, Garcia also coaches distances events for the UCSD track and field teams. In his first season as head coach, Garcia guided both the men and women’s teams to the 2007 NCAA Division II National Championships, marking just the second time UCSD has accomplished that feat at the D-II level. The women’s team finished 11th at the championships, moving up five places from their 16th place finish in 2006 . The men finished in the 20th spot, which was their highest finish since 2003. In 2008, Garcia led the women’s team to a sixth place finish at the NCAA West Regionals, while the men came in seventh. Redshirt freshman Bre Schofield advanced to the D-II National Championships in Slippery Rock, Pa., finishing 22nd overall, which was UCSD’s best individual finish since 2002. Schofield took home USTFCCCA All-American honors for her performance. The Tritons posted a combined six top-five team finishes in 2009, highlighted by the women’s second-place showing at the CCAA Championships in Arcata. They went on to finish seventh at the NCAA West Regionals in San Francisco, while the men placed ninth following a fifth-place effort at the conference meet. Garcia was a four-year athlete in both cross country and track at UCSD from 1996 to 2000. During his time as a Triton, he earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including Verizon All-Academic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2000-01. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year. Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude. He then completed a multi-subject professional clear CLAD credential at UCSD in 2001.

CYNTHIA

CASTRO Assistant Coach First Season Arizona State, 2003 Cynthia Castro enters her first season as assistant coach for the UC San Diego cross country program. She

joins the Tritons after a five-year stint as an assistant coach with the women’s cross country and track and field teams at Oregon State University. Alongside head coach Kelly Sullivan, Castro helped resurrect the running programs at OSU, which had been cut for budgetary reasons in 1988. She played an important role in recruiting a number of high caliber runners and was heavily involved in the program’s daily operations and alumni/community relations efforts. During Castro’s tenure, the cross country team went from last place in the Pac-10 Conference in its first season to earning a No. 28 overall national ranking in just a few short years. The Beavers went on to place ninth at the 2008 NCAA West Regional Championships, the program’s highest finish since the sport was reinstated. Castro also had a hand in coaching 13 different track athletes who cracked Oregon State’s all-time top-10 performance list, as well as a number of NCAA West Regional qualifiers. Prior to her arrival at OSU, Castro served as a research study coordinator at the University of Washington and was a health services intern for the U.S. DHSS Office on Women’s Health Region X based in Seattle. Castro graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Spanish from Arizona State. She competed in both cross country and track and field for the Sun Devils, helping the cross country team to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2000 (the highest finish in school history at the time). On the track, she recorded personal bests of 2:15 in the 800, 4:34 in the 1500, and 9:46 in the 3,000. While at ASU, Castro conducted several research projects pertaining to minority health disparities and went on to earn a master’s degree in public health with an emphasis in women’s health from Oregon State. Castro and her husband David live in Rancho Penasquitos with their two children Olivia and Joaquin. David works as a post-doctoral cancer researcher with the Sanford/Burnham Institute in La Jolla.

2010 TRITON CROSS COUNTRY

WOMEN’S 2009 SEASON REVIEW • The women’s cross country team started the year with a bang, recording five of the top ten times at the UC San Diego Opener on August 29. Bre Schofield broke the tape with a first place time of 15:12.2, setting a new course record and winning the Tritons’ opening meet for the second year in a row in the process. Elena Inouye placed second overall at 15:51.3 and Aaryn Kobayashi was fourth with a time of 16:00.2. Jackie Sikkema came in ninth (16:25.6) and Marie Schaper placed 10th (16:29.9) to round out the scoring for UCSD. • Schofield led the Tritons again two weeks later, finishing fifth overall at the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational. She clocked in at 17:45 to pace UCSD for the ninth consecutive race. Inouye finished 41st (18:54.30), followed by Kobayashi in 46th (19:00.10), Catherine Crisp in 55th (19:08.20), and Brianna Alban in 70th (19:21.30). The Tritons finished eighth out of 13 teams with a total of 199 points. Schofield was named the CCAA Female Runner of the Week for the second time in her career after finishing in the top five against many Division I competitors in Irvine. • The Tritons placed sixth of 11 squads at the University of Southern Indiana PreNational Invitational on September 26 in Evansville. Competing without Schofield, UCSD got a strong performance from Inouye, who finished the 6k with a time of 23:28.36 to lead the Triton contingent for the first time in her career. She placed 17th overall. Caprice Thompson and Schaper finished 30th and 31st, respectively, while Alban came in 35th and Nina Su rounded out scoring in the 37th spot.

Bre Schofield paced the Tritons in five out of six events in 2009.

• UCSD finished fourth out of 13 teams at the Triton Classic on October 10. Schofield returned to action and finished fourth overall with a time of 22:20.8. Schofield finished just behind individual winner Vivien Wadeck of Cal State L.A., clocking in at 22:13.5 to place second and earn All-CCAA honors. Schaper finished 18th with a time of 23:44.2 and Inouye also made the top-20, finishing 19th at 23:45.1. Kobyashi came in 24th (23:53.6) and Caprice Thompson was 32nd (24:07.9) to round things out for UCSD. Chico State claimed its sixth CCAA title in eight years.

Marie Schaper was one of four Tritons to win USTFCCCA AllAcademic Team honors last season.

• UCSD then posted a top 10 finish at the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships, as Schofield led the way once again in the Tritons’ final meet of the season. She clocked in at 21:52.8 -- good enough for 18th place individually -- but just barely missed the cut to qualify for the national championships as an individual. Inouye was 37th with a time of 22:52.3, followed by Schaper, who clocked in at 23:01.5 to finish 42nd. Kobayashi (23:19.5) and Alban (23:36.5) were the final two Tritons to score, finishing 54th and 66th, respectively. UCSD finished seventh overall as a team. • Four Tritons were named to the 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic team, as Inouye, Kobayashi, Schaper, and Schofield all finished in the top 30% in San Francisco , while maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Athletic Performance & Sports Medicine

T

wo integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports. The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored out by Rudy Thomas, UCSD’s Director of Strength and Conditioning. Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athlete Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two fulltime ATCs, two graduate assistant ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students. The UCSD athletic training room is a clinical site for San Diego State University’s accredited athletic training education program, where some of the athletic training students fulfill their clinical experience. Additionally, the UCSD Sports Medicine Center offers a wide variety of options for examination and rehabilitation. From acupuncture to a group of six highly specialized sports medicine, family practitioners and orthopedic surgeons, the UCSD training room has a multitude of options at your disposal to get you healthy and back on the field of competition in no time.

Community Outreach

T

he UC San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Student-athletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The student-athletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per studentathlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.
