Tritons to Meet Toreros to Start 2010 The UC San Diego men’s tennis team begins its 2010 campaign with a 1 p.m. exhibition road match on Saturday against cross-town foe University of San Diego, a Division I competitor. To end the 2009 season, UCSD lost in the first round of the NCAA D-II West Regional to Hawaii Pacific. This year’s schedule features trips to Arizona and Hawaii but the Tritons aim to include plenty of postseason travel as well.

Returners Highlight New UCSD Roster The 2010 roster for the Tritons features nine returners, including six underclassmen. Without any seniors on the squad, leading the way are three juniors - Erik Elliott, Armaun Emami and Vincent Nguyen. In 2008, Elliott played only doubles, tallying a record of 15-5. Emami went 1-0 in singles and 6-7 in doubles, while Nguyen put together a 5-10 singles record. Scouting the Toreros After getting rained out twice to start the season, USD hosts UC Riverside Wednesday. Following Saturday’s match with the Tritons, the Toreros are scheduled to challenge USC, the No. 1 ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, on Feb. 5. The Toreros are led by first-year head coach Brett Masi and the squad returns four starters this season: senior Charles Wolmarans, juniors Nils Schive and Dean Jackson and sophomore Nikola Bubnic. Preseason Division II Rankings Released The Tritons have been ranked No. 35 in the D-II ITA preseason rankings. UCSD’s duo of Emami and Austin West are positioned at No. 17 in doubles. Doubles Pair Advances to Fall ITA Championships The doubles pair of Emami and West finished fourth at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships, after qualifying for the tournament as the best duo out of the West Region. The Tritons, following a victory over Midwestern State, dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to a second-seeded pair from Francis Marion and then later fell to Bloomsburg 6-2, 6-3 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile.
