Tritons Host Sagehens to Start 2010 The UC San Diego women’s tennis team begins its 2010 campaign with a 2:30 p.m. home match against Pomona Pitzer on Friday. On Saturday, the Tritons will travel to play Cal St. Northridge at 12:30 p.m.

Returners Highlight New UCSD Roster The 2010 roster for the Tritons features nine returners, including six upperclassmen. Leading the way are 2009 All-CCAA honorees Valerie Tang, Taskeen Bains, Natalie Varnay and Anita Athavale. Last year UCSD earned its 29th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance before falling the West Regional to Hawaii Pacific. Preseason Division II Rankings Released The Tritons have been ranked No. 19 in the D-II ITA preseason rankings. Varnay, after posting a 6-10 singles record and 12-4 doubles record in 2009, is positioned at No. 45 in the individual singles poll. Scouting the Sagehens of Pomona Pitzer Pomona Pitzer advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament last year. The Sagehens, similar to the Tritons, feature plenty of returners on their 2010 roster. Making up the backbone of the team are All-Americans Siobhan Finicane and Olivia Muesse, who advanced as a doubles pair to the NCAA Championship Finals. Friday’s match will also be Pomona Pitzer’s season opener before the team travels across town to face Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at 11 a.m. Scouting the Matadors of Cal St. Northridge Saturday’s contest between the Tritons and Matadors will serve as CSUN’s 2010 season opener. Last year the Matadors finished 11-13 overall at the Division I level, good for fourth in the Big West Conference. All three of CSUN’s All-Big West honorees from 2009 are returning. Evgeniya Vertesheva and Brooke Done earned AllBig West Doubles First Team honors while Vertesheva claimed All-Big West Singles First Team honors and Nina Jaworowski earned a place on the All-Big West Singles Second Team.
