TRITONS SET FOR CCAA SHOWDOWNS
The No. 19 UC San Diego women’s tennis team is set to embark on its first road trip of 2010 and with three matches in a span of three days, the opponents featured will pose a significant challenge to the 1-0 Tritons. After topping No. 44 Sonoma State 8-1 last week in the season opener, UCSD will travel to play SSU again this Friday at 1 p.m. From there, the Tritons will visit No. 17 Cal State Stanislaus Saturday at 11 a.m. Based on the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, UCSD will technically need an upset over the Warriors to keep its streak of 60 consecutive league victories alive. To conclude the road trip, the Tritons will play UC Davis on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Aggies have topped UCSD 6-1 in each of the previous three seasons.
UCSD AIMS TO REPEAT SUCCESS VS. SSU
The Tritons, after being dealt rain cancellations in their first three matches, finally played a contest that counted last Friday. UCSD topped SSU 8-1 at home to secure the squad’s 60th-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. UCSD will look to repeat that success this Friday when it travels to SSU to play again. The Tritons defeated the Seawolves by scores of 9-0 and 8-1 last season.
BAINS EARNS CCAA WEEKLY HONOR
UCSD junior Taskeen Bains earned Penn/California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 8, conference officials announced Monday. Bains, out of Cupertino, Calif., topped Sonoma State’s Stephanie Luk at No. 1 singles in the season opener last Friday. It was the first time in her career that Bains had played at the lineup’s highest position. In doubles earlier, Bains teamed with Natalie Varnay to take down Luk and Molly Maguire, 9-8.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS OF CSUS
Cal St. Stanislaus finished second in the CCAA last year and now ranked ahead of UCSD in the ITA preseason poll, the Warriors hope to put an end to the Tritons’ league dominance. Although CSUS has started out 0-3 in 2010, the three losses have come against two Division I opponents - San Jose State and Cal St. northridge - and the No. 2 team in the NAIA - Fresno Pacific. Sophomore Verena Preikschas leads the Warriors in the singles leader and has gone 2-1 against the elevated competition.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES OF UC DAVIS
UC Davis finished 11-12 last season as a member of the Division I’s Big West Conference. The Aggies, returning six members of last season’s squad, have topped the Tritons 6-1 in each of the previous three years. The top UCD players include seniors Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi, who combined for 46 wins in 2009. Rounding out the top three singles group is sophomore Dahra Zamudio, who led the Aggies last season with 26 wins while going 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
