BUSY ARIZONA WEEK AHEAD FOR UCSD
The UC San Diego men’s tennis team is scheduled for five matches this week, all part of the Paseo Tournament held on President’s Day weekend in Phoenix, Ariz. After a scrimmage with Glendale Community College on Thursday at 3 p.m., UCSD will take on five Division II foes. Two of this week’s opponents are ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll - No. 27 BYU Hawaii and No. 25 Midwestern State. The Tritons are positioned at No. 35.
TRITONS DROP SEASON OPENER TO CUI
UCSD lost its season opener last Monday, 6-3, in a home match against the Concordia Eagles. Despite winning three of the top four singles contests, the Tritons failed to climb out of the 3-0 hole created by a CUI doubles sweep in the early going. Junior Erik Elliott posted an impressive victory at the No. 1 singles position for UCSD, knocking off the Eagles’ Augusto Elias by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Elias earned All-American honors in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) after compiling a 15-6 singles record in 2009. “Erik doesn’t have any experience up there at No. 1 so I’m certainly happy for his result out there today,” Tritons’ head coach Eric Steidlmayer said. “Anytime you get a win at No. 1 at this level, it’s something to be proud of.”
INSIDE THE PASEO TOURNAMENT FIELD
With 20 teams expected at the Paseo Tournament held on President’s Day weekend in Phoenix, Ariz., the Tritons will get plenty of action against Division II competition. First up for UCSD will be a matchup with the tournament’s host, Grand Canyon, at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The two squads met in 2009 with the Tritons coming out on top, 8-1. The No. 27 Seasiders will represent a stiffer test in that afternoon’s 3:30 p.m. contest as BYU Hawaii knocked off UCSD last season, 8-1. In their most recent postseason meeting, the Tritons topped the Seasiders 5-0 in the first round of the 2008 NCAA D-II West Regional. On Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. the Tritons will challenge Western New Mexico, a team that UCSD topped twice in 2009 by scores of 9-0 and 8-1. After an 11 a.m. matchup with Montana St. Billings, the Tritons will take on No. 25 Midwestern State at 4 p.m.
