TRITONS DROP 8-1 DECISION TO FPU
The defending national champions of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) proved to be too much last Friday for the UC San Diego men’s tennis team, with the Tritons dropping an 8-1 decision to Fresno Pacific at home. The Tritons now hold an overall record of 4-4. UCSD originally was scheduled to return to action Saturday to face UC Riverside in Murrieta but a forecast of rain for that area forced the cancellation of that match. On Friday, UCSD and FPU began their match with doubles play. Although the Sunbirds secured victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, the Tritons’ Erik Elliott and Jake Fellow topped FPU’s Denny Fafek and Jose Hilla, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot. As a doubles pair, Elliott and Fellow improved their 2010 record to 5-2 with the win. Although down just 2-1 heading into singles, the UCSD squad ended up getting swept the rest of the way. The Sunbirds exhibited their dominance by taking each match in straight sets. Freshman Junya Yoshida, previously undefeated, suffered his first career loss as a Triton, losing to Hilla, 6-3, 6-1.
NGUYEN’S FIVE VICTORIES LEADS TEAM
Junior captain Vincent Nguyen, playing mostly out of the squad’s No. 4 singles position, leads the Tritons in wins with five through the early stages of the 2010 season. The San Jose native was honored in 2009 with the ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS OF VILLANOVA
Monday’s 1 p.m. match between UCSD and Villanova is the first stage of the Wildcats’ one-week trip to Southern California. The squad from Pennsylvania has had a rough start to the 2010 season, suffering losses in all eight of their matches so far. The Wildcats are led by three captains: David Shaheen, Trenton Alenik and John Magliano. After Monday’s match, Villanova will move on to the Point Loma Nazarene Tournament before finishing the trip at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship the Tritons will be competing at.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS OF POMONA
The Tritons and Broncos are familiar foes in the West Region and in 2009, UCSD secured a 6-3 road win with singles victories from Nguyen, Naveen Dixit, Jake Fellow and Sam Ling. To start its 2010 campaign, CPP competed in the same Paseo Tournament in Phoenix that the Tritons played in. Entering a match Sunday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Broncos held an overall record of 1-3. CPP has gotten solid play at the top of its singles ladder from Robby Dabbs and Salvador Romero, with the two combining for a 6-2 record.
