HAWAII TRIP FEATURES TOP OPPONENTS

After UC San Diego challenges Dartmouth on Monday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, the Tritons will make their final preparations for a Hawaii trip that features three top opponents from the Division II West Region. Ranked at No. 28 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, UCSD will go up against No. 27 BYU-Hawaii, No. 5 Hawaii Pacific and No. 43 Hawaii Hilo.

FAMILIARITY WITH SEASIDERS, VULCANS

The Tritons have already competed with BYUH and UHH this season, with UCSD going 1-1 in those contests. While playing in the Paseo Tournament in Phoenix, the Tritons fell to the Seasiders of BYUH, 5-4. In that match, junior Erik Elliott gave UCSD a point at the No. 1 singles position when he defeated the Seasiders’ Rong Ma, 6-4, 2-6 (11-9). The Tritons, however, couldn’t overcome a 2-1 deficit after the doubles portion because the two teams split the singles matches with three wins apiece. In its last match, UCSD hosted UHH on March 13 and topped the Vulcans handily, 8-1. A sweep in the doubles stage fueled the Tritons’ dominating win.

SCOUTING THE DARTMOUTH BIG GREEN

Dartmouth, yet to play a 2010 conference match out of the Division I Ivy League, is in the middle of a West Coast trip and the Big Green picked up a 6-3 win Friday at Point Loma Nazarene. Entering a Sunday match against the University of Nevada, Dartmouth held a record of 8-3 overall this season. At the top of the singles ladder for the Big Green is senior Dan Freeman, a Chatsworth, Calif., native.

SCOUTING THE SEASIDERS OF BYUH

BYUH owns a record of 9-1 through the 2010 season. The only loss suffered by the Seasiders came on Feb. 11 in the Paseo Tournament during a match against Western New Mexico, a squad the Tritons have defeated twice this season. Ma continues to lead BYUH at the No. 1 singles position and the Seasiders as a team have now reeled off eight-straight victories.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS OF HPU

The Warriors have amassed a record of 14-3 this season and are ranked at No. 5 nationally in the latest ITA poll for Division II. The HPU squad was on the road all of last week, playing in Pomona, Calif., and Las Vegas. In Sin City, the Warriors faced three of the top teams in the country. HPU fell to No. 2 Barry, 6-3, lost to Armstrong Atlantic, 7-2, before capping the trip off with an 8-1 victory over St. Edward’s. Leading the Warriors in the singles ladder is Nikola Petrov, a native of Bulgaria. The Tritons and Warriors have some recent postseason history, with HPU knocking off UCSD in the first round of the 2009 NCAA West Regional.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS OF HAWAII HILO

UCSD defeated UHH on March 13, 8-1, helped by a doubles sweep, and will look to repeat that success in this Friday’s morning match.
