TRITONS CLOSE IN ON POSTSEASON
The UC San Diego men’s tennis team, ranked at No. 30 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, has two more regular season matches remaining in its 2010 schedule. The first is a 1:30 p.m. road contest on Thursday against No. 45 Cal Poly Pomona. The finale will be on April 21 against UC Riverside. With the top four teams from the West Region advancing into the NCAA postseason, the Tritons aim to grab a spot based on their 11-10 overall record and strong mark within the D-II region. In the most recent ITA rankings, the top four squads included Hawaii Pacific, BYU-Hawaii, UCSD and Sonoma State.
ELLIOTT EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Leading the way in UCSD’s singles ladder is junior Erik Elliott, who has compiled a 7-4 mark so far in 2010. Although relatively unknown on the national singles scene at the start of the season, Elliott has garnered attention with his playing performance and is now ranked at No. 29 as a singles player in the latest Division II poll.

In regards to win totals so far this season in singles, Vincent Nguyen (14), Junya Yoshida (13) and Sam Ling (12) are the three Tritons currently in double figures.
UCSD GOES 1-1 ON TRIP TO NORCAL
The Tritons edged UC Davis Friday, 4-3, in a thrilling non-conference contest that featured four three-set singles matches. UCSD secured victories in two of the three doubles matches to start Friday’s competition. Playing with Division I rules, UCSD eventually earned the one point for that stage with a win at the No. 1 position by UCSD’s Chapman Chan and Elliott, as the pair topped Hunter Lee and Nick Lopez, 9-8 (7-3). Ling came away with the first singles win of the day, defeating UCD’s Chris Aria at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-2, for his 12th victory of 2010. Despite that giving the Tritons a 2-0 lead, the next three matches to finish at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions would go to the Aggies. Yoshida picked up a comeback win at the No. 6 position, topping Connor Coates by a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to even the match at 3-3. The deciding point came down to a marathon clash at the No. 4 spot, where Tritons’ junior Jake Fellow battled Hunter Lee. After the first set went to Lee, 6-3, Fellow rallied back to take the next frame, 6-2. As the third set went into a 2-2 deadlock, leg cramps overcame Lee and forced him to retire from the match. On Saturday, UCSD dropped a 5-2 decision to Division III powerhouse UC Santa Cruz.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS OF CPP
No. 45 Cal Poly Pomona, currently 6-10 overall this season, is playing its regular season finale on Thursday against the Tritons. UCSD topped the Broncos earlier this year, 7-2, when the two squads met on March 2.
