TRITONS RETURN FROM 10-DAY BREAK
The UC San Diego men’s tennis team, ranked at No. 30 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, returns to action this week after a 10-day break from competition. Following a Tuesday match at crosstown rival Point Loma Nazarene, the Tritons will travel to Northern California for three matches later in the week. The week’s action will be capped off with a pivotal contest against No. 36 Sonoma State. UCSD, currently holding a 10-8 record, is coming off a tough 1-2 trip to Hawaii where the Tritons dropped two 7-2 results to No. 27 BYU-Hawaii and No. 5 Hawaii Pacific before cruising to an 8-1 win over No. 43 Hawaii Hilo.
ELLIOTT EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Leading the way in UCSD’s singles ladder is junior Erik Elliott, who has compiled a 7-4 mark so far in 2010. Although relatively unknown on the national singles scene at the start of the season, Elliott has garnered attention with his playing performance and is now ranked at No. 29 as a singles player in the latest Division II poll.
NGUYEN, LING AND YOSHIDA PACE TEAM
In regards to win totals so far this season in singles, Vincent Nguyen (13), Sam Ling (11) and Junya Yoshida (10) are the three Tritons currently in double figures. All three came away with victories in UCSD’s latest result, an 8-1 win over Hawaii Hilo on March 26.
SCOUTING THE SEA LIONS OF PLNU
Point Loma Nazarene, the 9th-ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), has amassed a record of 9-8 so far this season. The Sea Lions are led at No. 1 singles by Joel Meyers, a native of Melbourne, Australia. PLNU and UCSD met last year on April 2, a match that resulted in a 7-2 victory for the Tritons.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES OF UC DAVIS
UC Davis, a member of Division I’s Big West Conference, sits at a mark of 6-9 currently. The Aggies are coming off of a 6-1 defeat of Sonoma State. Playing out of the No. 1 singles position for UCD is Nick Lopez, a junior out of Orinda, Calif. The Aggies and Tritons last played on April 8, 2008, with UCD pulling out a 4-3 win.
SCOUTING THE BANANA SLUGS OF UCSC
UC Santa Cruz, the defending national champion at the Division III level, holds a 12-7 overall record through the 2010 season. At the top of the Banana Slugs’ singles ladder is Brian Pybas, a junior out of Salinas, Calif. In the last meeting between UCSC and UCSD, the Tritons secured a thrilling 5-4 win. Jake Fellow fought off four championship points and pulled out a 2-6, 7-6, 9-7 (6-2) victory to clinch the match for UCSD. This Saturday’s match will be played on the Sonoma State campus.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES OF SSU
Sonoma State represents a familiar Division II West Region foe for the Tritons. The two squads played less than a month ago on March 12 and Nguyen secured the clinching singles victory in the 5-4 win for UCSD.
