TRITONS AIM TO GAIN MARCH MOMENTUM In 2009, the UC San Diego softball team took three of four from San Francisco State early in the season as the series propelled the Tritons to a 6-2 start. With the 2010 Tritons sitting at 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, UCSD hopes to gain a similar boost to get over the .500 mark as the squad travels to play the Gators by the bay. The Tritons might meet a significantly different SFSU squad this year though, as the Gators have jumped out to a hot start of 9-3 overall and 7-1 in league play. The two teams have played close in the all-time series, with UCSD holding a 24-20 advantage. GAITO, LESOVSKY ATOP LEADERBOARDS Sophomore Camille Gaito and junior Kris Lesovsky remain atop the CCAA statistical leaderboards for earned run average and batting average. Gaito, who saw her scoreless streak of 34 innings snap last Saturday, still leads the league in ERA by a wide margin with her 0.48 mark. The second-lowest ERA is owned by SFSU’s Ashley Jackson at 1.27. Lesovsky, despite falling below .500 after a 6-for-14 week at Sonoma State, holds a conference-high batting average of .481. The Seawolves of SSU have four players in the top 10 in that category. GERCKENS JUGGLES LINEUP TO FIND HITS Through the season’s first 14 games, it was customary that the Tritons would leave Lesovsky as the cleanup hitter, start Mandi Eliades and Sarah Woofter at second base and shortstop, while shuffling in freshmen such as Katie Belanger and Nicole Spangler at third base. Head coach Patti Gerckens experimented a bit in Sunday’s doubleheader at SSU, moving Lesovsky to leadoff, shifting Woofter to third and Eliades to short, before inserting freshman speedster Dyanna Imoto at second. All options are open this weekend. SCOUTING THE GATORS OF SFSU The Gators’ 9-3 overall record and 7-1 CCAA mark represents SFSU’s best start in years. With an average offense statistically, the Gators’ play has been carried by the pitching staff. Led by Jackson’s 4-0 record, SFSU has also gotten a 4-1 contribution from Marissa Ibarra. Defensively the Gators have committed seven errors to their opponents’ 13. The SFSU attack is at its best with runners in scoring position, batting a tick below .300 at .299. Rain could be a factor in this weekend’s series as the San Francisco forecast holds a chance of rain on both Friday and Saturday.
