TRITONS FALL SHORT OF SERIES SWEEP For the fans in attendance, it was worth the wait. After starting four hours behind schedule because of field conditions, the softball teams from UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay gave the fans plenty of entertainment Saturday. Ten runs were scored between the teams across the two games, as pitching duels ensued in both contests. The Tritons took game one, 3-0, while the Pioneers held on for a 4-3 victory in the second game. “We played well for the majority of the weekend,” Tritons’ head coach Patti Gerckens said. “We went errorless through the first three games but our defense held us back again in the second game today. We will be challenged more, physically and mentally, next week at Sonoma State so we have to be prepared for that.” GAITO EXTENDS SCORELESS STREAK TO 31 Sophomore Camille Gaito shut down the Cal State East Bay offense this past weekend in two starts. Throwing 12 innings of shutout ball, Gaito picked up two wins to improve her record to 5-2 in 2010. She has shown consistent accuracy in working around the strike zone, allowing just two walks this past weekend and five this season. The only earned runs Gaito has given up in 2010 came on Feb. 12 against Chico State and she currently holds a scoreless streak of 31 innings. LESOVSKY FINDS EXTRA-BASE RHYTHM Although Kris Lesovsky’s hitting streak of six games was snapped with a 0-for-3 performance in the series opener with Cal State East Bay, she got back on track with three multi-hit games to close out the four-game set. Lesovsky flashed her extra-base power with two doubles and a triple, helping the Tritons take three of four from the visiting Pioneers. She currently leads UCSD in hitting this season with a .500 average (19for-38). SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES OF SONOMA Sonoma State has gotten off to a strong start in 2010, going 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. The Seawovles, after taking three of four from Cal State Dominguez Hills this past weekend, have shown plenty of pop at the plate. SSU has hit 13 home runs, including three from Simone Brandalise. LeeAnn Stroud and Rochelle Vanyi have hit two apiece. The Tritons own a 29-11 advantage in the all-time series with Sonoma.
