TRITONS STRETCH STREAK TO SEVEN UC San Diego completed a four-game sweep of Cal State Stanislaus Saturday, topping the Warriors 5-1 and 2-1 behind strong pitching performances from Camille Gaito, Brittany Sheats and Christine Zankich. The Tritons enter exam week with a seven-game winning streak. Gaito and Zankich allowed just one run each, lowering UCSD’s conference-best earned run average to 1.62 as a team. The Tritons improved to 17-9 overall and 13-7 within the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The UCSD offense scored all of its runs Saturday in the first and second innings. In game one, the Tritons got three scores in the first on run-producing singles from Nicole Spangler and Kellin Haley. An inning later, UCSD added two when Colleen Moen scored on a wild pitch before a Sarah Woofter single down the line brought home Kris Lesovsky. With Gaito en route to her league-leading 10th victory of the season, Lesovsky put together a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Sheats shut the door on the win, tossing a scoreless final inning to leave the result at 5-1 in favor of the Tritons. GRANATH EARNS CCAA’S WEEKLY HONOR Sophomore Camille Gaito was been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 8-14, conference officials announced Monday. The right-hander from San Rafael continued to baffle opposing hitters, going 3-0 with a 0.72 earned run average in three starts against Dixie State and Cal State Stanislaus. She logged 19.1 innings, allowing just 14 hits and two runs along the way. Gaito struck out 21 Red Storm and Warrior hitters in the week and matched her career-high of eight strikeouts in her first two starts of the week. SCOUTING THE COUGARS OF CSUSM Dave Williams’ squad has picked the right time to play its best softball of the season. The team has rattled off six straight wins, including a big pair of victories at home over Biola University last Friday. Pitcher Brenna Sandberg is leading the NAIA in wins with 13, and first baseman Alyssa Dronenburg ranks in the top10 nationally in home runs (8), slugging percentage (1.077) and total bases (56).
