TRITONS, COYOTES MEET IN FINAL SERIES In a crowded conference race, the UC San Diego softball team aims to take care of business this weekend in San Bernardino and snag one of the three available spots in the league tournament. The Tritons and Coyotes are separated by just a half game and the loser of the series will likely fall out of contention for not only a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, but also a bid for the NCAA Division II postseason. UCSD is currently 28-18 overall and 18-14 within the CCAA, which puts the Tritons in a tie for fourth place with Humboldt State. UCSD FALLS TO NO. 8 IN WEST REGION The NCAA Division II regional rankings released on Wednesday featured the Tritons at the No. 8 position, the team’s lowest spot of the season. Hawaii Pacific, at 37-6 overall and 22-4 within the Pacific West Conference, remains at the No. 1 spot. Directly behind HPU is Grand Canyon, another member of the PacWest that has gone 38-11 overall and 19-9 in league action. The CCAA’s own Sonoma State holds down the No. 3 position. The Seawolves are the only team in the conference to have already clinched a spot in the league tournament. CCAA TOURNAMENT STARTS APRIL 30 The 2010 CCAA Softball Championships, to be held in Stockton, Calif., will run from April 30 to May 2. The top four teams from the regular season earn a spot in the tournament. In the case of two teams having the same conference record, the following tiebreakers are applied in this order: head to head record, winning percentage against teams already qualified for the tournament, winning percentage against teams not qualified for the tournament and lastly, coin flip. Of the teams still in contention for a spot in the CCAA Championships, the fourth-place Tritons are 1-3 against Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-2 against Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-2 against HSU, 2-3 against Chico State and 1-1 against CSUSB. SCOUTING THE COYOTES OF CSUSB The Coyotes (25-25, 17-14 CCAA) started out April strong, taking two of three from CSUC and three of four from SSU. Continuing its homestand last weekend, CSUSB couldn’t keep the momentum going and dropped three of four to CSUDH. The Coyotes remain in the CCAA chase though and enter the week with one of the league’s most potent offenses. CSUSB’s 33 homeruns on the season ranks second in the conference. In the all-time series, the Coyotes hold a 3837 advantage over the Tritons.
