TRITONS CRUISE AT CAL STATE L.A.

The No. 19 UC San Diego women’s tennis team cruised to an 8-1 victory over No. 31 Cal State L.A. Sunday, tacking on yet another match to its conference winning streak. Despite the fact that the two teams are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in the West Region, the Tritons overwhelmed the Golden Eagles Sunday and secured the convincing road win. UCSD (4-2 overall) has not lost to a California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents in 63 matches. CSULA falls to 0-3 in league play with the loss. In the singles ladder Sunday, Natalie Varnay and Anita Athavale picked up their first wins of 2010 in straightset fashion. Cindy Dao, Samantha Yeung and Katie Mulloy also collected singles victories, each improving their record to 4-2 this season. The Tritons’ top singles player, Taskeen Bains, suffered a close loss to Dora Kiss, 7-5, 6-7 (10-7).

UCSD FALLS TO FRESNO PACIFIC FRIDAY

The Tritons rallied to win two of three doubles matches last Friday but couldn’t overcome a rough start in the singles ladder, ultimately falling to Fresno Pacific at home, 6-3. The two squads started Friday’s match with singles play and the Tritons dropped five of the six scheduled contests. The only win for UCSD came at the No. 6 spot from freshman Melissa Breisacher, playing in her first match as a Triton. Breisacher, a Rancho Santa Margarita native, topped FPU’s Heidi Jackson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

At the No. 2 position, the Tritons’ Athavale and Jacquelyn Davis improved to 5-1 in 2010 with their win. The two started out the season at the No. 3 position but have been playing out of the No. 2 spot recently with their improved play.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS OF VILLANOVA

Monday’s match between UCSD and Villanova is the first part of a one-week trip to Southern California for the Wildcats. Villanova has struggled through the early going, dropping its first four matches of the spring season. The Wildcats will play Point Loma later this week.

SCOUTING THE BRONCOS OF POMONA

The Broncos have gotten off to a strong 5-2 start this season but the most recent result didn’t go in CPP’s favor. The Broncos fell 5-4 on Sunday at home against Cal State Stanislaus, with the loss dropping CPP to 2-1 in conference play.
