TRITONS AIM TO FINISH MARCH STRONG
The No. 15 UC San Diego women’s tennis team travels to play Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday as California Collegiate Athletic Association play resumes for the Tritons after a month-long hiatus. The UCSD squad was busy playing non-conference opponents in the West Region, including the recently concluded trip to Hawaii where the Tritons went 1-2. After dropping a tough 5-4 loss to Hawaii Pacific, UCSD rebounded with a 7-2 victory over Hawaii Hilo.
UCSD CRUISES TO ROAD WIN OVER HILO
The Tritons cruised to a 7-2 victory over UHH Friday, the second Tritons’ win over the Vulcans in the last two weeks. UCSD improves to 8-4 overall on the season. After opening up Friday’s match with a doubles sweep, Tritons’ head coach Liz LaPlante went with a rearranged singles lineup to conclude the team’s trip to Hawaii. Despite moving up to No. 1 and No. 2 in the ladder, UCSD’s Natalie Varnay and Cindy Dao battled tough before suffering narrow losses to the Vulcans. The Tritons swept the remaining positions, including Roxanna Pourmirzaie’s first win of the season. Pourmirzaie posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over UHH’s Kaylene Peric at the No. 6 spot. Sophomore Samantha Yeung, owning UCSD’s team lead in singles victories, posted her eighth win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Anna Hamlin at the No. 3 position.
TRITONS MOVE UP IN NATIONAL POLL
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Tuesday, the Tritons moved up to No. 15 nationally after sitting at the No. 17 spot previously. UCSD remains at No. 3 in the West Region, behind powerhouses BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS OF CPP
Cal Poly Pomona, holding an overall record of 10-3 this season, is now riding a five-match winning streak. Because of budget restraints, CPP athletics has decided to cut the men’s and women’s tennis programs. This season will be the last for Broncos’ tennis. In last year’s meetings between UCSD and CPP, the Tritons took both by scores of 9-0 and 8-1. UCSD holds a conference winning streak of 63 matches. The two squads will meet twice in the next eight days.
SCOUTING THE COYOTOES OF CSUSB
After starting the season 0-6, Cal State San Bernardino has picked up two-straight victories. The Coyotes will travel to play the Tritons on Saturday, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m. The two squads will also meet on April 7 in San Bernardino.
