TRITONS ROLL TO HOME WIN OVER ‘NOVA
The No. 17 UC San Diego women’s tennis team secured a comfortable 8-1 home win last Monday over Villanova, a member of the Division I’s Big East conference. The Tritons improved to 5-2 overall this season. Monday’s loss dropped Villanova to 0-4 during the early stages of the 2010 campaign. The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage on the Wildcats with a doubles sweep. UCSD got results of 8-4, 8-2 and 8-2 in that portion, with Anita Athavale and Jacquelyn Davis teaming up to collect their teamhigh sixth doubles victory of the season. The impressive performance for the Tritons carried over into singles, where UCSD tallied wins in five of the six matches. Junior Taskeen Bains, who had earned Penn/ California Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week honors to start the year, broke a four-match losing streak with a commanding 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position Monday. Athavale and Davis earned spots in the singles ladder Monday, each raising their season record to 2-0. At the No. 5 position, sophomore Samantha Yeung secured a 6-3, 6-1 victory to earn her team-high fifth win of the season.
RAIN REARRANGES SCHEDULE AGAIN
The UCSD squad was set to travel to Cal Poly Pomona last Saturday but because of the weather forecast calling for rain in that area, the match was postponed to March 31. That contest will be the next CCAA match for the Tritons, who have won 63-straight conference affairs. UCSD is ranked at No. 3 in the West Region currently while CPP sits at No. 5. Before that March 31 date, the Tritons will be busy with non-conference opponents. UCSD plays Western New Mexico Wednesday before concluding the homestand with a Saturday contest with Hawaii Hilo. After exam week, the Tritons take a trip to Hawaii for three matches in a three-day span.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS OF WNMU
The Mustangs have gone 2-3 through the early going of the 2010 season. Unranked in the region, WNMU posted both of its wins by 5-4 scores. Leading the Mustangs in the singles ladder is sophomore Nikolina Vukadin, a Bosnia and Herzegovina native.
SCOUTING THE VULCANS OF HAWAII HILO
Ranked at No. 41 nationally and No. 6 in the West Region, Hilo represents the tougher test of the week for the Tritons. Senior Christie Pagatpatan, a native of Waipahu, Hawaii, is ranked No. 12 in the region’s singles poll.
