TRITONS AIM TO EXTEND STREAK
The No. 15 UC San Diego women’s tennis team, carrying a winning streak of 65 matches within the California Collegiate Athletic Association, will look to continue its conference domination when it hosts No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 31 Cal State L.A. this week. The Tritons, 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the CCAA this season, are scheduled to play eight matches in the final 19 days of the regular season. That stretch begins Wednesday with a 2 p.m. home contest against CPP. UCSD will finish its homestand with an 11 a.m. match on Saturday with CSULA.
UCSD CRUISES TO HOME WIN VS. CSUSB
Despite employing a drastically different lineup this past Saturday, the Tritons came up with a strikingly similar result - yet another conference win. UCSD secured a 7-2 home victory over Cal State San Bernardino. Leading the way for the Tritons was sophomore Samantha Yeung, who recorded her team-high 10th victory of 2010 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over CSUSB’s Brittany Choate at the No. 1 singles position. A few players competed Saturday for the first time as Tritons. Sophomore Krystal Mizuguchi and freshman Lisa Hardebeck recorded their first career singles wins with victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Mizuguchi paired with freshman Katie Barth to top the Coyotes’ Kara Jenkins and Choate, 8-4. The victory marked the first career doubles wins for Mizuguchi and Barth.
TRITONS MOVE UP IN NATIONAL POLL
In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released last Tuesday, the Tritons moved up to No. 15 nationally after sitting at the No. 17 spot previously. UCSD remains at No. 3 in the West Region, behind powerhouses BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS OF CPP
Cal Poly Pomona, holding an overall record of 11-5 this season, rebounded from two straight losses to defeat Sonoma State, 6-3, this past Saturday. Because of budget restraints, CPP athletics has decided to cut the men’s and women’s tennis programs. This season will be the last for Broncos’ tennis. UCSD and CPP met in Pomona just last week and in that match, the Tritons secured the 6-3 victory.
SCOUTING THE CSULA GOLDEN EAGLES
Cal State L.A., 7-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play, is in the midst of a long string of nine road matches. After playing Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday, the Golden Eagles will travel to La Jolla for Saturday’s 11 a.m. match. UCSD dealt CSULA an 8-1 defeat on Feb. 28, a contest that featured a doubles sweep for the Tritons. The only point gained by the Golden Eagles in that match came from a singles win by Dora Kiss, who has been named the CCAA Player of the Week on two occasions this season.
