CHARITY ELLIOTT chrisCARLSON HEAD COACH • THIRD SEASON MISSOURI STATE, 1992 Head Coach
UC Santa Barbara, 1993 UCSD Coaching Highlights Second Season • Led UCSD to consecutive NCAA Division II West Regional appearances in her first two seasons. • The Tritons’ 27 wins in 2008-09 tied a school record for single season victories. • UCSD finished with a 19-1 record in CCAA play in 2008-09, the program’s best finish since joining the conference. • The Tritons were ranked as high as No. 3 nationally in 2007-08.
Charity Elliott embarks on her third season as head coach at UC San Diego, having guided the Tritons to consecutive NCAA Division II West Regional Semifinal appearances in each of her first two years at the helm. 2008-09 proved to be a banner year for UCSD, as the Tritons tied the program’s all-time mark for victories, posted a near-flawless record in conference play, and earned a fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth.
Ranked as high as No. 7 nationally, UCSD finished with an overall record of 27-5 in 2008-09, tying the 2006-07 squad’s record for victories in a season. The Tritons were dominant in CCAA play, going 19-1 to capture the regular season championship and earn a No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The mark was UCSD’s best since joining the CCAA in 2000-01 and was the top finish by any team in the league since the 2002-03 season. The Tritons won 15 games in a row during the run -- one shy of the program’s longest streak -- and Elliott was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for her performance. Despite an opening round loss to Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA Tournament, the Tritons earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II West Regional in Seattle, where they knocked off league rival Cal State Dominguez Hills, 66-65, in the first round. UCSD’s season came to an end the following day with a narrow 52-49 defeat to eventual national semfinalist Alaska Anchorage. Under Elliott’s guidance, senior forward Michelle Osier was named the CCAA Most Valuable Player in 2008-09 and went on to earn Daktronics West Region Player of the Year accolades, as well. Osier set both the UCSD career rebounding (1,185) and steals (318) marks last season. Prior to her arrival on the La Jolla campus, Elliott spent three seasons as the head coach at Division I Portland State, where she led the Vikings to a remarkable turnaround during her tenure. After PSU finished with an overall record of 3-23 during her first year in

Head Coach Charity Elliott 2009-10 UC SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2004-05, the Vikings improved to 12-16 and 6-8 in the Big Sky Conference during her second season. The nine-win improvement ranked among the nation’s top 20 and Portland State qualified for the Big Sky Tournament for the first time since 2002-03. Before taking the Portland State job, Elliott served as an assistant coach for Arkansas for one season, helping the Razorbacks to a record of 16-12. Prior to that, she served as head coach at Cal Baptist for two seasons, where she guided the Lancers to a 16-16 record in 2002-03, snapping the program’s run of 10 consecutive losing seasons. She has also served in an assistant capacity with Southwest Baptist (a Division II school that compiled a 56-28 record during her three years), Southwest Missouri State (her alma mater), and San Diego State (under head coach Beth Burns in 1993-94). Elliott began her collegiate basketball career at Rice University, where she played for two seasons. She averaged 16 points per game as a sophomore before transferring to Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). While at SMS, Elliott guided the Bears to a 31-3 record as a senior and the program’s first-ever Final Four appearance in 1992. An integral part of one of the most successful teams in program history, she ranked in the top 10 nationally in free throw percentage and was named SMS’ Woman of the Year at the end of the 1991-92 season. The Bears posted a 57-8 record during her two-year career. After graduating from Southwest Missouri State with a degree in psychology, Elliott began her coaching career as an assistant at San Diego State, where she helped coach the Aztecs to a 26-5 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993-94. Elliott then returned to Springfield, Mo. to join Cheryl Burnett’s staff at her alma mater. She spent two seasons as an assistant at Missouri State, helping the Bears post a combined record of 46-17 with two Big Dance appearances. Elliott also earned her masters in education while at Southwest Baptist. She resides in San Diego with her husband Chris, a member of the Triton coaching staff this season.

HANNA HOWARD ASSISTANT COACH • THIRD SEASON UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND, 2005
Also returning for her third season at UC San Diego is assistant coach Hanna
Howard. A former standout at the University of Portland, Howard was hired as the top assistant on head coach Charity Elliott’s staff in 2007. In her first season on the UCSD campus, Howard helped guide the Tritons to an impressive overall record of 25-10 and a 14-6 conference mark. Ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation during the season, the Tritons advanced to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship game and then to the NCAA West Regional Semifinals, where they lost to Seattle Pacific.
UCSD was even better last season, recording a school-record-tying 27 victories against five losses and posting a near-perfect record of 19-1 in CCAA play. That mark was UCSD’s best finish in conference play since joining the CCAA for the 2000-01 season and the league’s best finish overall in six years. The Tritons received a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, before suffering a 52-49 defeat to Alaska Anchorage. A four-year letterwinner at Portland, Seltzer had her senior year cut short after a tearing a ligament in her knee early during the 2004-05 season. She graduated with a degree in Organizational Communication in the spring of 2005 and concluded her collegiate career with averages of 6.6 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in four seasons with the Pilots. Immediately following her graduation from Portland, Howard began working as the Executive Assistant to the President and Owner of a wireless retail store in the Portland area. It did not take long for the Ashland, Oregon native to realize the passion she still had for the game of basketball and begin to pursue a career in coaching. Howard is actively involved in all aspects of coaching, including recruiting, scheduling, and player development. She also oversees the program’s scouting and video operations. Howard and her husband Marques were married in September and reside in La Jolla.

Chris Elliott coached alongside his wife, Charity, at Portland State from 200407, helping rebuild the Viking’s program and leading the team to consecutive Big Sky Tournament appearances. Athletic Performance / Sports Medicine 2009-10 UC SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
T
wo integral parts of the UC San Diego athletics department are the Athletic Performance Program and the Sports Medicine Program, both of which provide a tremendous advantage to all 23 of the UCSD intercollegiate sports. The Athletic Performance Program is geared toward teaching each student-athlete how to achieve the highest level of athletic development through enhancement of all components of strength and conditioning. Athlete workouts are planned and monitored by Rob Mamula, UCSD’s Director of Athletic Performance. Mamula brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Triton athletics and represents the only full-time strength and conditioning coach in the entire CCAA. The Tritons work out in the RIMAC weight room, which is over 12,000 square feet in size and features state of the art equipment. The UCSD Athletic Performance Program is truly designed with the student-athlete’s enhancement in mind. Very few programs at the Division II level have such expertise and first class facilities at the disposal of the student-athlete, helping to further distinguish the Triton Athletics Department as one of the premiere intercollegiate programs in the country. The UC San Diego Sports Medicine Center is dedicated to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries suffered by Triton student-athletes. Under the supervision of head athletic trainer Kevin Messey MS, ATC, CSCS and his staff, UCSD athletes receive the highest quality medical care and access to an extensive network of physicians and other medical specialists. The rest of the training room staff is comprised of two full-time ATCs and an average of 10 athletic training students (ATS). Community Outreach 2009-10 UC SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
T
he University of California, San Diego Department of Athletics is committed to actively participating in the community through a variety of outreach events and services. Student-athletes from 23 sports participate in a wide range of service and outreach programs in and around the San Diego area. In 2003-04 the Tritons began the “Team Up!” program. This program assists local elementary schools that do not have a physical education component in their current curriculum. UCSD student-athletes provide healthy physical activity and create an environment for elementary school students that foster positive thinking and team building. The program was run at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School in the morning hours prior to school starting and during the students’ lunch periods during the past two years. Triton student-athletes make the holidays brighter for 12 families in the San Diego area on an annual basis, providing a plethora of gifts and holiday cheer. Triton teams paired up and each tandem purchased presents, food, and goodies to deliver to their adopted family before the holidays. Families were selected by the Neighborhood House Association which runs the Head Start programs throughout San Diego County. Studentathletes contacted the families to find out what special presents the children wanted, as well as what sort of clothing or other needs could be met. Teams delivered the presents in person and spent time with the families, often playing games with the children. Families each received approximately $300-$500 worth of gifts, depending on the number of children. Presents ranged from a bike for one child to clothing and food for the parents. In conjuction with the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Triton student-athletes have gone to work to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in each of the last three years. The studentathletes held a bake sale during the Annual Sun God Festival on the UCSD campus. Each team brought baked goods for a sale in the evening prior to the festival’s main event. The goal at each CCAA member institution was to raise $1 per student-athlete. Triton student-athletes far exceeded this goal, raising over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2005. Additionally, the Intercollegiate Athletics Department holds an annual Blood Drive to benefit the American Red Cross. All coaches, staff and out of season student-athletes participated in the blood drive, while those student-athletes who were in season recruited other students on campus to donate blood on their behalf.
