MOUNTAIN OUTREACH DONATES TO BED GIVEAWAY PROFILES IN SERVICE - MOUNTAIN OUTREACH
Mountain Outreach (MO) teamed up with the B Squad Project, a local non-profit, to help make Christmas magical for underprivileged children in the community.
the last 13 to be built this spring. MO also donated bedsheets, covers, and pillows for most of the beds (community members donated a few). In total, the MO donation will be worth approximately $10,400.
The bed giveaway is part of an initiative the B Squad Each year since 2018, the B Squad has identified children calls “Gutsy Gunner’s Sweet Dreams,” named in honor who do not have beds of Gunner Bowlin, a “I cannot express my gratitude for to sleep in and provided local boy. When the opportunity came for them to be part of the B Squad’s efforts, Carol Smith, Gunner’s mom, knew “without a doubt” that she wanted to “give back to the community that helped my family so much.” Smith said, “The Sweet Dreams event is our favorite! The look on those children’s faces and the appreciation you see from the parents is priceless. Gunner loves the bed giveaway! He tells everyone he meets about it. Last year, he even helped paint some of the beds.” Shannon Barman, who created the B Squad Project in 2018, said, “The first year we did the bed giveaway, people said we were crazy. Nobody knew there was a need. The second year, we had a list of kids waiting for us.” The beds have “Psalm 139:13-14” branded on them in memory of Barman’s grandmother, a devout Christian. The verses say, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Barman said that kind of message would have been just what her grandmother wanted kids to know. This is the third year the B Squad has hosted Gutsy Gunner’s Sweet Dreams. Including the 30 beds this year, the non-profit will have given away 110 beds to Whitley County children. Rocky Brown, Director of MO, said, “We were very thankful to the Lord Jesus, that He provided a way for us to build and fund these beds for the B Squad Project. For us, it was another avenue to help folks in need in our community and share the love of God with them. Additionally, in the process, we got to work with our work-study students and teach them how to provide the absolute best quality work we could.” Barman called MO’s donation a “Godsend.” “I cannot express my gratitude for MO. They have been amazing,” Barman said. “The beds are a brand-new design from last year, and we are absolutely in love with it. They added a bookshelf to the side so kids can step up into the beds easily if they’re bunked. We love it.” Barman mentioned that it’s been exceptionally tough to bring in donations for any projects this year, with the ongoing pandemic. “Some of our children and friends have health issues, so even though we wanted to be able to raise funds, we had to be smart for our families and for our community and play it safe,” Barman said. “This year has been nuts, but we’re still trying to make things work. We want to help kids in our area.” Thanks to the hard work and generosity of Mountain Outreach, the B Squad was able to do just that.

ELIZABETH UNDERWOOD Elizabeth is a freshman from Lexington, Kentucky, who transferred to Cumberlands for its rigorous and accredited science programs. Outside of classes, she is a leader in international student ministries on campus, works as a residence assistant, and runs a small business in which she sells handmade jewelry. Elizabeth is a laboratory assistant in the Department of Chemistry. As such, she answers students’ questions on laboratory procedures, explains chemistry principles, and helps prepare the lab. This work-study position has increased her passion for the sciences. Elizabeth also has stronger communication skills, more refined lab technique, and a heightened awareness of lab protocols because of her job. Elizabeth hopes to become a physician assistant (PA), earn her doctorate, and teach PA courses someday. Her work-study position, funded through a workship program, is setting her up for a successful future to accomplish those goals.
MEET OUR STUDENTS MYLES SIMON Myles is a junior from Hephzibah, Georgia, studying accounting and business administration. He is a dedicated student and active member of campus life. One of his favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 17:17, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” He strives to be that friend for others. Myles is a football player at Cumberlands, which has been a great experience for him. His time on the team has taught him toughness and teamwork. With his busy schedule, he has been pushed to strengthen his time management skills. In Myles’ words, “my family taught me to put my education first.” He was a Mid-South Conference Academic All-Conference honoree in Fall 2019, and he has made the Dean’s List several times. In Spring 2020, Myles won a KYCPA Education scholarship for his accounting skills and the Berger Scholarship for his academic achievement. It’s because of his financial scholarships that Myles has chances to excel like he has, and he is grateful for the opportunities.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE
Appalachian Ministries (AM), an outreach program hosted by University of the Cumberlands, delivered a total of 497 pairs of new shoes, sweatshirts, and hygiene items to six local schools for their annual Shoes 4 the Soul event this year. Schools included were Whitley North, Pleasant View, Pine Knot, Oak Grove, Boston, and Whitley East Elementary Schools.
The children get their feet washed by a Cumberlands student – reminiscent of how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet in the Bible – and receive a clean pair of socks, a new pair of shoes, and hygiene items (or, in some years, school supplies). The kids then get to play small recreational games with the college students until it’s time for them to go back to school.
“Every business, outreach program, and educational institution has been forced to think outside the box ever since the pandemic hit,” said Caitlyn Howell, director of AM. “It’s been very challenging for us, but, fortunately, we have found ways to continue serving our community despite the obstacles.”
For the kids, it’s a chance to hang out with cool college students and receive shoes and supplies they might not have enjoyed otherwise. For Cumberlands students, it’s a humbling experience in which they get a glimpse of Christ’s love for them and for the world.
AM has hosted Shoes 4 the Soul each year since 2011. Approximately 500 children are served per year. The kids typically arrive on Cumberlands’ campus one day in early fall, after Cumberlands students have arrived on campus. Student volunteers join the AM team in the O. Wayne Rollins gymnasium and spend a few hours serving the schoolchildren.
6
Due to COVID-19 precautions, the event was unable to be held in person. To ensure the students were still blessed with the shoes and hygiene items they’re used to receiving each year, AM coordinated donation deliveries to the schools. Howell said, “It is such a joy to work with a school that is constantly looking for ways to pour back into our local
community. Through this project every year, I am reminded of the responsibility we have to faithfully serve those around us, regardless of the circumstances. As Christ has faithfully loved us, so we are called to love one another.” This was the first year Pine Knot Elementary participated in Shoes 4 the Soul. Regina Campbell-Spring, family resource officer at the school, has purchased shoes, hygiene items, and similar essential products before for Pine Knot students. “We were thrilled with the donation from Appalachian Ministries,” Campbell-Spring said. “Many students come into school on scheduled days right now, so, they could use the shoes. And the ones doing virtual schooling still need get outside and play. The children just love new shoes!” Campbell-Spring noted how children often grow so quickly that their feet are sometimes crammed into shoes that are too small for them. Some children run around outdoors barefoot because their shoes don’t fit, even in cold winter weather. “Shoes are important to protect them,” said Campbell-Spring. “We service between 800-900 students at our buildings. We are very thankful to receive this donation. It is a blessing, and we thank God for providing for us through Shoes 4 the Soul this year.” Those interested in learning more about Shoes 4 the Soul or supporting the program in the future may visit www.ucumberlands.edu/ Shoes4Soul.

Honor or Memorialize a Friend or Loved One
Tribute Program at University of the Cumberlands How are Tribute Gifts acknowledged? For an Honor Gift, the person being honored is sent an appropriate card listing the honor giver, as well as the occasion for the honor. The name of the giver and the honoree will be listed in the next issue of the University’s newsletter.
What is a Tribute Gift? A Tribute Gift shows love and respect for the person being honored or memorialized. It says that the world is a better place because of this individual. Through a Tribute Gift to University of the Cumberlands, a memory of the past or an honor of the present is tied to the future as it is made to live on in the lives of students in need. The size of the gift is up to you. Many send the amount they would spend on floral arrangements, candy, or other appropriate gestures. Gifts generally range from $15 to $1,000, but the right amount for you is the amount your heart tells you to send.
For a Memorial Gift, the family of the individual you wish to memorialize is sent an appropriate card the same day that the gift is received. The name of the giver and their loved one will then be listed in the next issue of the University's newsletter.
An Honor Gift is a gift that shows admiration and respect for a loved one or a friend on a significant day in his or her life, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Mother's Day, or Father's Day.
The amount of all Tribute Gifts, including Memorial Gifts and Honor Gifts, is kept confidential. Also, all gifts are tax deductible as allowed by law.
TRIBUTE PROGRAM
How will a Tribute Gift make a difference? Your gift will provide a lasting legacy for students in need as it is used to provide scholarship and workship assistance, books and supplies, food and housing, and many other supportive services. Listings reflect Tribute Gifts received Feb. 1, 2020 through Jan. 31, 2021. In preparing this list, every effort has been made to ensure accuracy and completeness. If a mistake was made in the way you were identified or if your name was omitted, we sincerely apologize. You can help us set the record straight. Please notify the President's Office regarding any changes in the way your gifts should be recorded in future reports.
A Memorial Gift is a gift made in memory of a departed loved one or friend. It is a wonderful way to express sympathy and high regard, as well as a means to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries or other special days.

WALK A MILE IN THEIR SHOES Nothing beats walking through life in a pair of brand new shoes. You feel good, you look good, and, besides, it keeps your feet warm! Many underprivileged kids don’t get to enjoy that experience often. When your parents only make enough money to put food on the table and pay the house bills, new shoes – and sometimes even hygiene items – are a luxury you can’t afford. For just $30, anyone can sponsor a child through Appalachian Ministries’ Shoes 4 the Soul program. That one sponsorship provides needed hygiene items and new shoes to a local child and, more important, helps that child walk through life with extra confidence. You can help a child do that by contributing today.
