What is a Blue Hen??? niversity of Delaware's athletic teams have one of the most unique nicknames in all of college athletics – "The Fightin' Blue Hens." It is a name they carry with pride that stretches back over 200 years of history of the state of Delaware. The Blue Hen nickname has been continuously used by all University of Delaware intercollegiate teams since 1911. On December 9, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved that a military battalion was to be raised from the lower three counties along the Delaware River. Thus was born the Delaware Regiment, a group of eight companies representing New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. The second company was composed of men from Kent County and was under the command of Captain John Caldwell, an avid fan and owner of gamecocks. The militia often amused themselves by staging cock fights with these birds which were of a breed known as the Kent County Blue Hen, having some blue plumage. The renown of these chickens spread rapidly during that time when cock fighting was a popular form of amusement, and the "Blue Hens' Chickens" quickly developed a reputation for ferocity and fighting success. Capt. Caldwell's company likewise acquired a considerable reputation for its own fighting prowess in engagements with the British at Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton, and was soon known as "the Blue Hen Chicken" company.

One version of the story states that Caldwell's company rushed into battle screaming "We're sons of the Blue Hen and we're game to the end!" Captain Caldwell's company was part of Col. John Haslet's first Delaware regiment that formed near the outset of the Revolution in January, 1776, and in August, 1781, remnants of the regiment were still battling at Eutaw Springs, SC. Although often referred to as "The Fighting Delawares," Haslet's regiment also won the sobriquet, "The Blue Hen Chickens," which has become the nickname for all Delawareans. The name was formally adopted by the Delaware General Assembly in April, 1939 when the "Blue Hen Chicken" was named the official state bird. UD’s College of Agricultural Sciences maintains a breeding group of the Blue Hen Chicken on its campus farm. The UD mascot, YoUDee, made his debut in September 1993. YoUDee stands 6-foot, 8-inches tall with a 6-1 wing-span and size 28FF sneakers.

HEAD COACH MIKE KEOGH Delaware ‘73 12th Season at Delaware 0-0 Overall and at Delaware Michael Keogh was named the University of Delaware's new men's golf head coach July 21, 2001. The 12th head coach in UD history and just the fourth since 1955, Keogh begins his 12th season in 2012-13. Keogh, 60, is a 1973 graduate of the University of Delaware, where he was a letterwinner on the golf team, and also holds a master's degree from Wilmington College in 1999. In his first season at the helm of the Blue Hens in 2001-2002, he led the squad to an eighth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. His teams finished a season-best fifth at both the Wesley and Lafayette Invitationals. In his second season, the Hens placed ninth at the CAA championships but captured three tournament titles during the season, winning at the Army Fall Invitational, the Goldey Beacom Fall Invitational, and the season-ending Scotty Duncan Memorial Invitational. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Hens posted six top five team finishes, including a second place finish at Scotty Duncan Memorial hosted by the Blue Hens during the spring and a second place finish at the John McDonald Classic hosted by Temple during the fall. The Hens placed ninth at the CAA Championships. As a team, the Hens improved their stroke average to 77.59 for the season after posting a mark of 80.94 the previous year. During the 2004-05 campaign, the Blue Hens improved to an eighth place finish at the CAA championships, falling just one stroke short of seventh place, and posted a tournament victory at the spring GoldeyBeacom Invitational. The Hens also placed second at the fall Goldey-Beacom Invitational, were fourth at the Don Mershon Invitational and Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament, and sixth at the Lafayette Invitational. His team's 2005-06 season was the best in five years in the CAA as he led the Blue Hens to a fifth place finish in the team standings led by Joe McLister, who became the first UD individual to earn All-CAA honors and place in the top 10 in the league tournament with a 10th place finish. The team posted six top five tournament finishes during the season, including winning the team title at UD's Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament to finish out the season. Delaware's team cumulative stroke average of 75.69 established a new school record. The 2006-07 squad, led once again by all-time UD career stroke average leader McLister, posted nine top 10 finishes, including winning the Hens' own Scotty Duncan Memorial, placing third in the Fairfield Spring Invitational, and fourth in the William & Mary Spring Invitational. The Hens registered a sixth place team finish at the CAA Championships. Delaware finished seventh at the conference championships in 2007-08, when the Blue Hens posted three third place finishes and one fourth place finish. The Blue Hens improved in 2008-09 under Keogh, as UD placed among the top five in eight of 10 tournaments on the year. Delaware captured the Cornell Invitational, and came in second at the Navy and Scotty Duncan Invitationals. Justin Martinson earned medalist honors at the George Washington and Lafayette Invitationals during the spring season, and the Blue Hens finished seventh at the CAA Championships. Keogh led Delaware to his most successful season in 2009-10, as the Blue Hens won a school-record four consecutive tournaments during the fall of 2009. After winning its own Scotty Duncan Memorial, UD then captured the Joe Agee Invitational and Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate before closing the run with a victory at the Andrew Geyer Memorial Classic. The Blue Hens posted two other top-five finishes during the spring, and later placed sixth at the CAA Championships. Additionally Keogh oversaw an incredible season by Justin Martinson, who became the first UD golfer to win a conference title by earning medalist honors with a four-shot victory at the CAA Tournament. Martinson, who set a Blue Hen single-season record for lowest average round, finished 13th at the NCAA Regionals and won two other tournaments on the year. Delaware continued its strong run during the 2010-11 campaign, finishing among the top 10 in all but two tournaments while claiming team titles at the Navy Fall Classic and Villanova Invitational. Martinson earned first team All-CAA honors, while he concluded his career as the school's career leader in lowest stroke average.

Additionally, Martinson carded the two lowest rounds in Delaware history with a 64 at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate and a 65 at the Navy Fall Classic, while fellow senior Kevin McLister fired a pair of 66 rounds. Keogh led the Blue Hens to another strong year in 2011-12, which featured six top-five finishes including defending the team title at the Navy Fall Classic. In the spring Greg Matthias became the second Blue Hen in three years to claim the CAA title, as he earned medalist honors at nearby Wilmington Country Club. Keogh lettered in 1972 during his career playing under legendary head coach Scotty Duncan, helping the team post an 11-7 dual record and a fourth place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference championships. An English teacher at Newark High School, he is a member of the Delaware State Golf Association, Delaware State Teacher's Association, and Newark Country Club. Keogh previously served as an assistant golf coach at Newark High School and as Newark Country Club's Junior Golf Program Coordinator. He has also coached soccer at the high school level. Keogh and his wife, Kathy, reside in Newark. They have two children. Son, Marty, was a four-year standout golfer at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1998-2002.

ASSISTANT COACH PATRICK AYLWARD Marymount ‘96 Fifth Season at Delaware Patrick Aylward, who served as head coach at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. for seven years, begins his fifth season as the top assistant to University of Delaware golf head coach Mike Keogh in 201213. During his first year in Newark, he helped the Blue Hens finish among the top five in eight of 10 tournaments on the season. Delaware captured the Cornell Invitational title in the fall, while Justin Martinson earned medalist honors at the George Washington and Lafayette Invitationals during the spring season. The 2009-10 season was even more successful for the Blue Hens, who captured four tournament titles all in consecutive weeks - during the fall and compiled 11 Top 10 finishes. Delaware placed sixth at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships thanks to the play of junior Justin Martinson, who captured the individual title and moved on to place 13th at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Martinson, who also was named the CAA Player of the Year, became the first UD golfer to win a conference title since 1989. Delaware continued its strong run during 2010-11, finishing among the top 10 in all but two tournaments while claiming team titles at the Navy Fall Classic and Villanova Invitational. Martinson earned first team All-CAA honors, while he concluded his career as the school's career leader in lowest stroke average. Additionally Martinson carded the two lowest rounds in Delaware history with a 64 at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate and a 65 at the Navy Fall Classic, while fellow senior Kevin McLister fired a pair of 66 rounds. Aylward helped lead the Blue Hens to another strong year in 2011-12, which featured six top-five finishes including defending the team title at the Navy Fall Classic. In the spring Greg Matthias became the second Blue Hen in three years to claim the CAA title, as he earned medalist honors at nearby Wilmington Country Club. A native of Highland Falls, N.Y., Aylward, 35, earned a bachelor's degree in health and fitness management at NCAA Division III Marymount in 1996 following an outstanding four-year playing career. He was a two-year team captain and helped the team set a school record for all-time low team score in 1996. He also played one season for the MU soccer team. While at James I. O'Neill High School in Fort Montgomery, N.Y., he was a two-year captain and a state sectional qualifier in 1991 and 1992. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Marymount in 1997 and 1998 before becoming head coach at his alma mater in 1999. He left as the school's all-time winningest coach and his golfers set six school records for lowest match score by a team and an individual during his tenure. In addition to his role as assistant coach at Delaware, Aylward works with Bank of America. He and his wife, Maribeth, reside in Newark with their two daughters, Emma (11) and Annie (10), and son, Davis (2).

The Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2011-12, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 19 teams in 13 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2012. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, CAA COMMISSIONER football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & Tom Yeager field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2011-12, 24 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 51 student-athletes received All-America honors in 16 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past six years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason. VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. At least five CAA teams have reached postseason play for the past four years. The CAA has also had great success in women’s basketball, with six teams making the postseason in 2011-12. Conference champion Delaware advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time and was ranked #7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. James Madison beat two ACC and two Big East teams to reach the championship game of the WNIT. Drexel, Hofstra, UNCW and VCU joined the Dukes in the WNIT. Old Dominion, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997. The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981 and ODU reached the national

semifinals in 2011. Four men’s soccer teams earned NCAA Tournament berths last season and James Madison became the seventh CAA team to reach the final 16 of the event in the past decade. Hofstra’s softball team won the Los Angeles Regional and became the first CAA squad to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. At least two women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past five seasons. William & Mary’s men’s cross country squad has made the NCAA Championship in 12 of the past 13 years. In the pool, George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2012 NCAA Championship and received AllAmerica honors. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. On the track, Mason’s David Verburg placed fourth in the 400 meters at the NCAA Championship. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 15 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last 10 Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

2012-13 BLUE HEN MEN’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE • BLUEHENS.COM

ince its inception in 1743, the University of Delaware has steadily produced some of the most productive and accomplished members of our society. From statesmen to scientists to sports figures, the Blue Hen family boasts a lengthy list of prominent alumni. Delaware is one of only five colleges in the nation to have produced a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a Secretary of State, and a Vice President. Harvard, Princeton, William & Mary, and Yale are the only other institutions to have a similarly prestigious alumni base. The Blue Hen family also consists of several worldrenowned inventors and a pioneer in the computer industry. Astronauts and acclaimed aeronautical experts also have been known to call Newark home during their collegiate careers. In the entertainment industry, Delaware has been a steady producer of both top-flight athletes and award-winning entertainers. From Hall of Fame professional athletes to Emmy-nominated actors, Delaware has continued to supply the world with entertainment.
