Not to be outdone, the women also finished strong, earning eight top-five finishes. Cortney Barry led the way, placing second in both the 500- and 1,650-freestyle events. The sophomore standout also reached the NCAA ‘B’ standard in both events while breaking the school record in each.

24th Season w West Chester ‘81 One of the longest tenured head coaches in the Colonial Athletic Association, John Hayman closed out his 25th season as head coach of the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams in 2012-2013.
At the 2010 CAA championship meet, the Blue Hens picked up right where they left off in 2009. During the competition, Delaware took home four conference titles, highlighted by two individual championships from All-CAA speedster Hans Gillan. Overall, the men finished 3rd at the meet, while the women placed seventh. For their efforts in leading UD, Gillan, Grady Carter, and Ross Buckwalter all were honored as 2010 Mid-Major All-Americans.
Since arriving at Delaware in 1989-90, Hayman’s team have consistently battled for the conference title, winning four men’s title and two women’s crowns in America East action. His teams have placed in the top three at the conference meet a combined 24 times in 50 competitions. Hayman led the Blue Hen women to consecutive America East team titles in 1996 and 1997 and led the For the fourth straight year, the Blue Hen men finished UD men to an unprecedented streak of four conferthird at the CAA championships in 2010-11, led by ence crowns in 1997, 1998,1999, and 2000. He has the four-time CAA champion 400-yard freestyle relay coached 26 women’s conference champions, including team. It was also the fourth straight year Hayman led All-East freestyler Nancy Davis, and Sarah Peffer, who his men’s squad to 10 or more dual meet wins during the regular season. The Blue Hens 1993-94 8-3 2nd, AE led by record-setting freestyle sprinter Andrew Zinn, 1994-95 6-5 3rd, AE 3rd, AE captured three CAA titles - the first titles won by the 1995-96 8-4 1996-97 3-7 1st, AE; AE Coach of the Year UD men since joining the league in 2001-02. For his 1997-98 6-4 1st, AE; AE Coach of the Year efforts, Hayman was named the CAA Men’s Swimming 1998-99 6-7 1st, AE; AE Coach of the Year 1st, AE; AE Coach of the Year Co-Coach of the Year. The Delaware women went 12-5 1999-00 6-1 2000-01 3-8 3rd, AE in duals and placed sixth at the CAA meet. 2001-02 5-6 9th, Colonial Athletic Association 2002-03 2-8 9th, CAA Under his guidance, the Blue Hens built upon their 2003-04 2-7 10th, CAA 10th, CAA success and continued to shine at the championship 2004-05 1-9 2005-06 4-8 8th, CAA meet during the 2008-09 campaign. The men captured 2006-07 7-6 8th, CAA three CAA titles during the competition, highlighted 2007-08 11-3 3rd, CAA; CAA Coach of the Year 3rd, CAA by record-setting performances by Hans Gillan and the 2008-09 11-2 2009-10 12-3 3rd, CAA 400-freestyle relay team. won seven Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2003 and 2004 and was named the 2004 CAA Outstanding Female Swimmer at the league meet. Peffer also was a provisional NCAA qualifier in the 1,650 freestyle in 2004. Maryann Walker captured the 200 backstroke title at the 2007 CAA meet.

University. He led the women’s team to a four-year record of 35-21-1 including 11-win seasons in 1986-87 and 1988-89 while the men posted a three-year mark of 19-15. His overall coaching record is 223-115-1 in 29 seasons on the women’s side and 162-140 in 28 seasons on the men’s side for a combined mark of 385-255-1.
Hayman has also coached 28 men’s conference champions, including All-East breaststroke specialist Tom Maday. Maday’s eight career America East conference individual titles in 1997-2000 is tied for the most ever by a UD male swimmer.
A 1981 health and physical education graduate of West Chester University, Hayman was a four-year letterwinner for the Rams, serving as captain of the team as a senior and setting seven school records.
Hayman was named America East Coach of the Year six times, including four straight men’s coach of the year honors in 1997-2000. In 25 years at Delaware, Hayman’s dual meet record is 188-94 on the women’s side and 143-126 on the men’s side for a combined mark of 331-220.
After graduating from West Chester, Hayman went to Southern Illinois University where served as an assistant coach while earning his master’s degree in physical education and biomechanics in 1983. Hayman, a physical education instructor at Delaware, resides in Bear, Del. with his wife Tamara and their four children.
Hayman, a certified level four swimming coach by the ASCA, came to Delaware after serving as head coach of the men’s and women’s squads at Gannon (Pa.)

the men’s and women’s swimming and programs in 2003-04. The women’s team went 2-3 in duals and placed fifth at the Central States Conference and 11th at the NAIA national championships in 2004-05 and posted an 0-7 dual mark, was seventh at the Liberal Arts Conference championships, and 13th at the NAIA championships in 2004-05. The men’s team, which did not compete in an official season in 2003-04, began action in 2004-05 and went 0-7 in duals, placed 11th at the Liberal Arts Conference meet, and placed 11th at the NAIA championships. While at Morningside, he also served as aquatics director, managed the aquatics facility, trained lifeguards, co-directed the Morningside College All-Sports Camp, and coordinated team fund-raising efforts. Coleman and his wife, Kara, reside in Middletown, Del.

24th Season w West Chester ‘81 Rory C. Coleman, a former All-New England performer at Keene State and head coach Morningside College in Iowa for two seasons, was hired as the firstever full-time assistant swimming coach in University of Delaware history September, 2005. Coleman assists veteran head coach John Hayman with both the men’s and women’s program and serves as the Blue Hens’ primary recruiter. He will begin his ninth season on the UD staff in 201314. He has played a key role in Delaware’s four straight (2007-11) third place finishes at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, marking the highest finish ever by the UD men at that meet. Since his arrival at Delaware, the Blue Hens have captured seven top five team finishes at the CAA championships and won 14 conference individual and relay championships. Coleman, a native of Fostoria, Ohio, attended the University of Findlay (Ohio) where he competed in swimming and club water polo before transferring to NCAA Division III Keene (N.H.) State College. While at Keene, Coleman earned All-New England honors as a backstroke specialist. He set six school records, establishing marks in the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 100 individual medley, 200 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay. He earned his degree in social science from Keene in 2000. He served one year as admissions counselor, resident director, and coordinator of Greek Life at Thiel College in Greenville, Pa. before beginning his coaching career at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He served as graduate assistant swimming and diving coach and was an adjunct faculty member in 2001-02. He coordinated recruiting efforts, assisted in the management of facilities, and taught aquatic classes in the physical education department. He completed his master’s degree in physical education from Loras in 2006. He moved on to NAIA member Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa in December, 2002 where he started
