Season Outlook Every coach wants great team chemistry with his or her squad and Detroit head men’s soccer coach, Morris Lupenec, is no different. He will be looking to his handful of returners to help set a precedent with the 14 newcomers that are joining the Titans in 2009. “In order for us to be successful this year, it is very important for us to have great team chemistry,” said Lupenec. “To help accomplish this the number one thing we expect from the veterans is leadership.” The Titans have four seniors on this year’s squad in defenders Nick Dreshaj, Jake Munchiando, Ali Youssef, as well as midfielder Ken Simon. Dreshaj ended 2009 tied for second among teammates in points with nine and finished with a team-high five assists to finish tied for sixth in the Horizon League. In addition, he placed seventh among con-

ference peers with 0.25 assists per game. Munchiando started all 18 games he saw action in last year and was one of two Titans to assist on the second goal in Detroit’s 3-2 double overtime win against Xavier. “Jake is a natural leader and we hope Kenny will show leadership this season,” said Lupenec. “Ali has wanted to show it and Dreshaj is also a natural leader.” Simon was in Detroit’s starting lineup 19 times in 2008. He tied for a team second best-three assists and tied for fourth in points with seven. Simon collected all three helpers against Xavier and he helped lead the Titans to a 2-1 victory at Loyola as he scored off a free kick with four seconds left in the first half. Youssef played in 18 games and was in the starting line-up 11 times in 2008, which was his first year with the Titans. “The seniors do not want to end this year like how 2008 finished,” added Lupenec. “They will not accept losing because this group wants to end their career on a high note.” There are only two juniors on this year’s squad in Jacob Mechlowitz and Charlie Hancock. In addition, there are four sophomores who played with Detroit last season in Jon Bowman, Julio Castillo, Adam

Philp and Sam Seppo. Philp ended his first campaign with UDM having played all 20 games and finished second in goals (4) and tied for second in points (9) among his teammates. He netted his first collegiate goal and the game-winner at Western Michigan and was able to find the back of the net, twice, in Detroit’s 2-0 shutout victory over IPFW. “Adam is going to be contributing up top for us this season,” commented Lupenec. “We made the switch of positions midseason last year and it turned out to be beneficial for the line-up. I am looking forward to seeing how Adam will contribute at this position for us in 2009.” Seppo was in the starting line-up 19 times and ended the season third among teammates with three goals and tied for a team fourth-best seven points. He saw action in first collegiate contest against Evansville and fired off the eventual gamewinner in the 62nd minute at Loyola. Castillo did not see action last year due to an injury, while Bowman played in 14 games. He dished out his lone assist of the season on the second goal of Detroit’s 2-0 shutout win against IPFW. “The returners bring experience and they will be depended on to show the freshmen and transfers the way on and off the field; they will have quite a bit of responsibility,” said Lupenec. Outside of Philp, sophomore Otieno Victor, Seppo and freshman Jace Bearden will be vying for playing time at the forward position. “Our forwards are going to be really dangerous and quick,” added Lupenec. “We are deep in this position with Sam returning and having Madonna transfer Victor, as well as Adam contributing up top.” Those that will be competing for time at the midfield position are Bowman, Castillo, Munchiando, Simon, as well as fresh-

Season Outlook

men Alex Grice, Pat Lepera, Kevin Pinkos and Nate Robinson. “The midfield is our strongest position from the standpoint of having Pat Lepera and if Kenny can perform to his potential, we will be dangerous,” said Lupenec. “Our flank midfielders will be very difficult to handle in Jake (Munchiando), also because Nate Robinson’s pace is too good; he is fast.” Those players that will look for playing time in the backline are Dreshaj, sophomore transfer Mike Chiandussi, from the University of Windsor, as well as freshmen Tom Allott, Chris Kobayashi and Jeremy Stoychoff. “Our defense is going to be a work in progress,” added Lupenec. “But once we get it all sorted out and they are used to playing with each other, we are going to have four very difficult to beat defenders that will

work as a nice cohesive unit and make life difficult for the opposing attacking players.” In the net will be two new faces in either freshmen Martin Robertson and Brandon Waterstradt. “Goalkeeping will be a question mark as we have two freshmen in between the pipes this year,” said Lupenec. “Both athletes have the ability to step up to the plate, but it is more about playing at the collegiate level and neither athlete has this experience since they are freshmen. The first few games of the year will give us an idea about this position.” This year’s schedule features four opponents which played in post-season in 2008 and six games that will be played at Titan Field. “We have a tough schedule for the upcoming season,” said Lupenec. “The first six games are going to be played on the road, which will end up laying the foundation for the season, as well as prepare us for Horizon League play.” The Titans start the 2009 campaign at IUPUI (Sept. 1) and will then face IPFW five days later. Detroit will head west to Spokane, WA, to participate in Gonzaga’s tournament where the Titans will face Oregon State and the host school, Gonzaga. Outside of conference play, other road games for Detroit include Michigan, Xavier, Bowling Green and Oakland, which ended 2008 as the Summit League regular season champion. The Titans open up the Horizon League slate at home on Sept. 25 against Valparaiso and UDM’s first conference road game is at Green Bay on Oct. 2. “The Horizon League is extremely competitive every year,” added Lupenec. “Every conference game is going to be even more important this year due to the tournament shrinking to a six-team format. There is a premium on every league contest;

2009 Detroit Men’s Soccer

we cannot afford to make any mistakes in conference competition this season.” The five other teams that UDM will host in 2009 are Valparaiso, Oral Roberts, Wright State, Western Michigan and Loyola, and the Titans will wrap up the regular season against UIC (Nov. 7). Loyola captured the 2008 Horizon League Championship, while UIC advanced to the round of 16 in the 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. “We need to come out flying because early results will dictate how the season will go for us,” commented Lupenec. “We need to be organized early and we have to win games. We are going to do whatever we can do in our power to win soccer games this year.” Time will tell if all the right ingredients were in place for the strong team chemistry.

Morris Nick dreshaj lupenec Senior w F 6-3 Head wCoach 185 Clinton 18th Season Twp., MI/ Chippewa 149-145-41Valley/Tiffin (.506) Having established himself as one of the premier soccer coaches in the region, Titan head coach Morris Lupenec is commencing his 18th campaign directing the University of Detroit Mercy men’s soccer program. Lupenec owns a 149-145-41 (.506) overall record at Detroit. Under Lupenec’s reign, the Titans have advanced to the conference championship game five times, have earned two regular season crowns and a Horizon League Tournament title (1996). Since Lupenec’s arrival in 1992, the Titans have 45 all-conference honors, either first or second team, and 22 athletes have been named to the all-newcomer team. In addition, three Titans have been named Horizon League Player of the Year (Kal Kaliszewski, ’93; Jorge Ferreira, ’95 and Marcel Flemming, ’98). Last season, UDM finished with a 4-13-3 overall mark and a 1-6-1 record in Horizon League play. The Titans won its conference opener at Loyola by a score of 2-1 on Sept. 26 and finished out its home season with a 3-3 tie against Bowling Green. UDM tied Green Bay in Wisconsin, 1-1, in the first round of the Horizon League Championship (Nov. 6) and the Titans advanced to the next round after netting four goals during the shootout to the Phoenix’s one. At the close of the regular season, senior Renato Susnja earned all-conference second team honors for the second year in a row. In 2007, UDM posted eight shutouts and ended with an overall record of 5-10-5 and a 1-4-3 mark in Horizon League play to finish eighth in the conference. Detroit started the season with seven-straight road games, which included an appearance at the BGSU Invitational. In Bowling Green, the Titans defeated both Canisius (4-0) and Central Arkansas (2-1 OT) to finish first among the pool of competitors. The Titans’ final win came at Cleveland State (4-0) and UDM closed out the season with a 4-3 overtime loss at Butler in the first round of the Horizon League Championship. In 2006, the Titans finished seventh in the conference with a 6-9-3 overall mark and a 2-5 record in Horizon League play. Detroit won three-straight and four out of five games in September. UDM finished the year with a 2-1 overtime loss against Green Bay in the first round of the conference championship. In 2005, Detroit amassed a 12-6-2 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference play. The Titans claimed the league regular season title for the second time in school history, but fell to Milwaukee in the championship game, 1-0. Lupenec was named conference coach of the year for the third time, while four Titans earned all-conference honors. Lupenec’s other two coach of the year honors came in 1995, when it was the MCC after leading the Titans to the regular season title, and then in 1996 when UDM had its only NCAA berth.

Lupenec came to Detroit after a successful playing and coaching career at nearby Oakland University. OU went to the Division II Tournament during each of the three seasons Lupenec served as an assistant to head coach Gary Parsons. During Lupenec’s playing days, the Pioneers, as they were known then, advanced to the national semifinals his junior and senior seasons. He earned all-region accolades both of those campaigns and also played in the 1983 East-West Senior Bowl. Lupenec is still ranked third on the Pioneer career list in goals scored (57), in points (152) and is fifth all-time in assists (38). He also holds the school single-game record for goals (6) and points (13), while he shares the school mark for goals in a season (20) with two other Pioneers. OU honored Lupenec in 1990 as he was inducted into its hall of fame. In addition to his duties at Detroit, Lupenec is the Coaching Director for one of the top youth programs in the country, the Vardar Soccer Club. Lupenec and his wife Diane currently reside in Rochester Hills, MI, with their children, Chelsea (19), Jenna (16) and Justin (8). His twin brother, Mike, is UDM’s head women’s soccer coach.

Horizon League Aspiring to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility. Entering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swim-

28

ming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A Proud History...

Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Mid-

western City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest nonmerger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Athletic Success...

In the past few years, the Horizon

League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, while Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Horizon League Academic Success...

League expectations of behavior during conference events.

Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-five student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2008-09, while eight earned Academic AllAmerica honors.

Demographics...

Horizon League institutions boast a

combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

Community Service...

In addition to its athletics success, the

Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.

Sportsmanship...

One of the Horizon League’s points of

emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon

Governance...

The Horizon League is governed by a

Board of Directors comprised of the ten member institutions’ chief executive officers. Dr. David Sweet, President of Youngstown State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2010. Ron Strollo, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Youngstown State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Christine Moeller, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Cleveland State, is the Vice Chair and Sheila Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.

Leadership...

Jonathan B. ( Jon) LeCrone is in his

18th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (197980). LeCrone is in the second year of a fouryear term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after completing a five-year term on the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

2009 Detroit Men’s Soccer

Visibility...

The Horizon League has enhanced its

media visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a five-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events. In addition, the Horizon League has partnered with CBS College Sports to provide the official web site at www.horizonleague.org, which offers the most comprehensive coverage of Horizon League teams on the net.

Horizon League Network...

The Horizon League is a recognized

leader in video streaming, through the Horizon League Network (HLN), having produced more than 1,200 free, live events in the past four years. HLN also features vignettes of all 19 League championships, weekly highlight videos during the men’s and women’s basketball season and other special programming. The network is primed for unprecedented success and growth beginning in 200910, as it has partnered with WebStream Productions, a national leader in live sports webcasting with clients including NCAA championships and the Indianapolis Indians Triple A baseball team.

Titan Field The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus soccer-track facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The first event held in the new facility was a women’s soccer match against Wright State, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Titans’ Trina Kochanski scored the new field’s first goal just 20 minutes into the contest. Two weeks later, the women would post the first Titan victory in the updated facility with a 4-0 blanking of Youngstown State. The field is also utilized by the UDM men’s and women’s track and field program as well as the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the only Division I programs in the state of Michigan. Phase 2 of the project, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage. “The construction of our new synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.”

Strength & Conditioning attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. Each team will have a designated time in the weight room that will be scheduled by the coaches and also the Strength and Conditioning Staff. Once this scheduled time is set there are no exceptions for an individual to be late or miss completely. Studentathletes must contact their Strength Coach and also their Head Coach, prior to the scheduled time, if there is a time conflict. No team will ever work in the weight room without the supervision of one or more members of the Strength and Conditioning Staff.

The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities the strength and conditiong staff will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, they will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated

athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches: head coach Joe Tofferi and assistant Nick Wilson, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned specific varsity teams, which allows daily interaction between the athletes, their coaches and the strength and conditioning staff. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. Titans student-athletes are also counseled in important areas such as nutrition in order to allow them to perform at their highest level. In the past year, the Fitness Center expanded by over 400 square feet. Four new Olympic style platforms, three squat racks and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added – all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features an ONS Performance nutritional shake machine. The post-workout drink is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning by insuring an increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake.
