Western Country Club The Titan women’s golf team is grateful to the members and staff of Western Golf and Country Club, who graciously allow the team to use the club as its home course. Located in the nearby suburb of Redford Township and having celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2001, Western is one of the most historic country clubs in the State of Michigan. Early in 1926, the foundation for the club was laid with the solicitation of members, the construction of a clubhouse and the hand of famed architect Donald Ross designing the course. The unofficial

6

opening of the golf course was held on June 9, 1927. Western’s 18 holes were laid out among rolling hills and the meandering Rouge River within its 6,808 yards. The course is challenging, demanding, and yet playable. Ross’ trademarks are evident in Western’s pure layout and small, subtle greens. The course is heavily tree-lined, and strategically placed ponds, bunkers and doglegs provide different decisions on each hole. Several elevated tees and greens accentuate the character of the golf course. In 1945, the B.E. Taylor Company, a

metropolitan Detroit land developer, agreed to sell the club to its members, and Western continued to grow in stature. The Michigan Open was held at Western in August of 1952 as the club began its quest to host many major championships. It was the state Open’s second appearance at Western. The Motor City Open was staged at Western G&CC in 1956, and was won by Bob Rosburg in a playoff against Ed Furgol. The winning score was the highest of any PGA event during a 15-month span, attesting to the difficulty with which Western can play, even for the pros. The club also hosted the Western Open in 1960 and, once again, a playoff was needed to determine a champion. This time, Stan Leonard defeated Art Wall in one extra hole to win the tournament championship. The club has since discontinued hosting tour events, but it remains the site for many PGA, USGA and GAM sectional and regional events. Among its noted membership are past Michigan Amateur Champions Chuck Kocsis (1933-34) and Bud Stevens (1959-63-65). Stevens is also a five-time winner of the GAM Championship. Of Western, legendary golf professional Walter Hagen once wrote: “In my long experience with golf courses, it has been my observation that any course laid out by Mr. Ross tests the mettle of any golfer, be he one of the world’s best, either amateur or professional. And this is one of the chief reasons why I was much in favor of the Western course as the scene of the big (1928 match) between (U.S. Open Champion) Johnny Farrell and myself. It is my opinion that the Western course is a very excellent test of golf, both for finesse and accuracy.” Brandon DiPaola serves as Western’s head golf professional and Jason Iding is the Manager. The annual Detroit Titans Invitational is hosted at Western Golf and Country Club.

UDM Spring Outlook For the first time in history, the Horizon League women’s golf champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. And the Detroit Titans, in their sixth year as a varsity golf program, definitely have their eyes on the prize. They have a solid mix of youth and experience as the top six on the roster includes two seniors (Alex Aversa and Rachel McHenry), two juniors (Marni Achterhoff and Alainna Stefan) a sophomore (Jackie DeMarco) and a freshman (Collette Hansen). They played some good golf in the fall, culminating in a runner-up finish in the Dayton Invitational’s 10-team field. And they have a strong desire to get the job done. “We have a lot of players back from last year and we have Rachel back in action after she redshirted last season. There’s a big incentive to get it done at the league championships,” coach Terri Anthony-Ryan said, “especially for our

Marni Achterhoff

seniors. They’re a big part of our success because of their leadership.” Younger players carried the Titans throughout the fall season and Stefan clearly picked up where she left off in the spring of 2009. As a sophomore, she led the Titans in stroke average (80.4) and was voted AllHorizon League by the conference coaches. She again had the top average on the team in fall play at 82.2, and was Detroit’s top individual finisher in three of its four tournaments. “Alainna received good leadership when she was a freshman and she has learned how to be successful as a college golfer,” coach AnthonyAlainna Stefan Ryan said. “She’s a perfectionist and she works hard at her game.” of 12th place at the 2009 Horizon League DeMarco, a sophomore who shot a Championship. career-low 74 at the Zippy Invitational and McHenry, meanwhile, spent the fall finished ninth individually at Dayton, was shaking off a bit of rust after redshirting next in line after Stefan this fall with an last season. Coach Terri Anthony-Ryan Terri Anthony-Ryan, a noted golf professional in the Metro Detroit area for the last two decades, joined the UDM staff in July of 2005 to become its head women’s golf coach. She is now in her fifth season with the Titans and continues to help the team make great strides. Anthony-Ryan has served as the head golf pro at the Beechwoods and Evergreen Hills Golf Courses in nearby Southfield since 1989. During her professional career, she has also been the head pro at Valley View Golf Course (Shepherd, MI), and has been an assistant at Western Golf & Country Club (Redford Township, MI), Whispering Willows Golf Course (Livonia, MI) and Doral Country Club (Miami, FL). Her background at Western helped turn the club into the Titans’ home course as well as the site of the team’s first invitational tournament. In her continuing duties with the Southfield courses, Anthony-Ryan oversees all aspects of the pro shop operation, organizes 12 annual city golf tournaments – including the Southfield championship – and oversees a staff of nearly two dozen individuals. One of her Beechwoods assistants, Kenny Lee, served as the UDM women’s team’s first assistant coach. Anthony-Ryan is a past member of the Michigan PGA Board of Directors and other PGA committees (1991-2002) and

8

has been a member of the Midnight Golf Board of Directors since 2002. Voted Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year in 1996, many of her proteges have played high school and college golf. Four of her UDM players have earned All-Horizon League honors. Anthony-Ryan coached the men’s golf team for one year (1988) at Henry Ford Community College. Additionally, she coached girl’s basketball at Redford Union High School from 1981-89. “We think that Terri has been a great addition to our coaching staff. She is very well-respected in the golf community,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “Her abilities as a coach and a golf teacher should definitely help take our young women’s golf program to a higher level. With her background of attending Catholic schools throughout her career, Terri also has gained an understanding of the values of a Catholic school and education, which will make her a very good fit at UDM.” Anthony-Ryan graduated from Saginaw Valley State in 1981, majoring in Business Administration, and received her Education degree from the University of Michigan in 1992. She attained her PGA membership in 1984. She and her husband Jim are the proud parents of two sons, Sean and Jimmy.

Asst. Coach Kyle Stefan Kyle Stefan joined the Titan women’s golf program this fall as an assistant coach. Stefan is a recent graduate of Wayne State University, where he played golf in 2008-09 and was named to the Coach’s Honor Roll while majoring in finance. He also spent two years on the golf team (2005 and ’06) at Olivet before transferring to WSU. “I think Kyle is a great asset to our program,” UDM head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan said. “He has a great deal of knowledge about playing golf at the college level and I think what he’s able to pass along will be of great value to the ladies on our team. He knows a lot about our University and team already, and I expect that he will be very valuable to us in the recruiting department.” In addition to playing at the college level a year ago, Stefan – whose sister Alainna is an All-Horizon League golfer at UDM – also served as an assistant boys golf coach at University of Detroit Jesuit, where he spent three seasons on the varsity golf team during his high school days. Stefan helped the Cubs to a regional championship in 2003, and served as team captain as a senior. He qualified for the Michigan Junior Amateur Championship on three occasions.

While at Wayne State, Stefan worked as a writer and editor for The South End, the school’s student newspaper. He also volunteered as a member of the Media Operations group when UDM hosted the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional and 2009 Final Four. Stefan, 23, lives in Dearborn.

Dir. of Golf Mark Engel Mark Engel is in his sixth year with the title of UDM’s Director of Golf. The head men’s coach for 20 years now, he successfully launched the women’s golf program in 2004. Among his initial women’s recruits were All-League Titans Mandi Dupuis and Ashley Hamilton. His Titans have been among the Horizon League’s dominant men’s teams over the last 11 years, winning five championships while also coming in second on three other occasions. They played in the NCAA Regionals four times since 2001. Engel has coached 13 AllHorizon League honorees and five AllAmerica Scholars.

www.DetroitTitans.com

Engel also serves as UDM’s Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Information. He is a product of Syracuse University’s famed Newhouse School of Public Communications. Engel worked in media relations for the PGA of America at the 2004 Ryder Cup and has covered many major golf tournaments for the Associated Press, including the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open. Engel, 57, and his wife Jan are the proud parents of three sons – Dave (28), a graduate of UDM’s College of Engineering and Science, and twins Steve and Brian (21), juniors in UDM’s College of Business Administration.

2009 Season Review By all standards, 2008-09 would have been classified a rebuilding year at UDM. The women’s golf team graduated two All-Horizon League seniors, Mandi Dupuis and Ashley Hamilton, the previous spring and then a third conference honoree, Rachel McHenry, took a redshirt. As it turned out, though, a pair of sophomores stepped up their game and two newcomers made an impact as coach Terri Anthony-Ryan put together a new lineup. And there were some definite highlights to the season as the Titans bore down in a quest for a first-ever Horizon League Championship. They opened strong at the Chicago State Invitational as sophomore Alainna Stefan began asserting herself as the team’s top player. Fourth on the team in scoring average as a freshman, Stefan won the rain-shortened CSU tournament with a one-round total of 74, leading Detroit to third place as a team. Stefan didn’t have to carry the whole load, of course, as a different Titan led the team at each of their four fall tournament stops. Sophomore Liz Zouzal, a transfer from Gardner-Webb, led the way at Michigan’s Wolverine Invitational, tying for 23rd place. Sophomore Marni Achterhoff was the top Titan at the team’s own tournament, grabbing sixth place individually. And freshman Jackie DeMarco paced UDM at the Dayton Invitational with a seventh-place finish. Detroit got off to a quick start as the spring schedule unfolded, climbing the leader board on the final day to take

second place, behind Bethune-Cookman, at the North/South Intercollegiate. Stefan’s 77-73–150 card earned her a share of third place individually, and Achterhoff wasn’t too far behind, tying for eighth (78-76–154). Stefan moved up to second place (78-79–157) at the Butler Invitational as Detroit claimed fifth as a team in its next stop. Achterhoff paced the Titans as they ended up 11th at Northern Kentucky, then Stefan again assumed the top spot – with a 16th-place finish – as UDM closed out the regular-season at Bowling Green.

All that remained was the biggest tournament of the year as the young Titans – with only one senior, Jenny Kubert, competing – looked to improve on their third-place finish at the 2008 Horizon League Championship. As the teams toured the front nine of Kearney Hill Links in Lexington, KY, Detroit and Youngstown State were locked in a headto-head battle for the lead before the Titans faded a bit and stood fourth after the hotly-contested first round. Only seven strokes separated the four top contenders. Alex Aversa’s season-best 76 paced UDM in Round 2, but the Titans lost ground to eventual champion YSU. Stefan fired a 79 to lead the way on the final day and Detroit picked up five shots on Loyola in the race for third, but UDM still did end up fourth, two shots behind LU. Stefan was UDM’s top finisher at the league championship, taking 11th place (83-85-79–247), and was voted AllHorizon League by the coaches after leading Detroit with an 80.4 stroke average for the season. With all but one player returning from the six who saw action in 2008-09, it was a year that both included success while also setting the table for the future.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Detroit joined in 1980 On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a

focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). HORIZON LEAGUE NETWORK The Horizon League and WebStream Productions announced the launch of the completely redesigned Horizon League Network web site this fall. The site, which can be found at www.HorizonLeagueNetwork.tv, serves as a portal to hundreds of live and ondemand videos while giving its users the ability to interact on an array of social media platforms. HLN is the premier destination for free, live video of Horizon League games and other on-demand features. The Network will web cast more than 400 events during the 2009-10 academic year.
