Training Courses The Titans have a number of training courses available to them as they pursue the Horizon League Championship with two main courses that they run on throughout the year,. One course is Cass Benton Park in Northville, the site for the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, located just off I-96 and a short drive from campus. The course provides an extensive challenge as it is one of the oldest and hilliest areas of the park. Detroit also utilizes Kensington Metro Park in Milford, where UDM hosted the 2009 Horizon League Championships and the 2008 Michigan Intercollegiate. Kensington covers 4,481 acres featuring a wooded hilly terrain that surrounds beautiful Kent Lake. Each year more then two and a half million visitors will make their way to Kensington. The Titans also train nearby at Palmer Park, Heritage Park, Martin Road Park and Belle Isle. Palmer Park is located on 7 Mile and Woodward. The property includes Palmer Woods and the Detroit Golf Club. The area is home to some of Detroit’s premier neighborhoods, including Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, University District and Green Acres. Heritage Park in Farmington Hills is a 211-acre park with more than four miles of trails for hiking and crosscountry skiing, a large picnic area, playground, sand volleyball courts, and an in-line hockey rink. Martin Road Park in Ferndale is the city’s main recreation area. Parks and Forestry is responsible for the maintenance of 11 neighborhood parks in Ferndale along with three mini-parks comprising 81 acres. Belle Isle is a 982 acre island park in the Detroit River managed by the Detroit Recreation Department. It is connected to the rest of the city by the MacArthur Bridge. It is the largest island park in the United States and the third largest island in the Detroit River after Grosse Ile and Fighting Island.

Guy Murray program on the legs of a talented senior class led by Pat Liederbach, a three time All-League performer who became just the fifth Titan in school history to receive multiple conference honors. Liederbach has also finished in the top 100 at the regional three times and could put himself in rare company as just the third Titan harrier to place in the top 100 four times. A four-year letter winner on the Titans cross country and track teams from 1985-89, Murray graduated Magna Cum Laude from Detroit with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in May of 1989. At Detroit, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the University of Detroit’s President’s Award, the athletic department’s highest honor, for top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the AllMidwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the All-MCC Track and Field Team in 1989.
Guy Murray enters his 18th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case. Guy Murray enters his 18th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case. In the last three years, Murray has once again put the cross country teams back into title considerations with the women running their first full scoring squad since 2004 at the 2008 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, with the squad competing at full strength again in 2009. The men posted their first top 20 appearance since 1998 as well as its sixth best team score in a regional in school history at the 2008 regional, where the red, white and blue placed 19th with 578 points. Murray has rebuilt the men’s

He was an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the marathon in 1999 after he finished 19th at the Grandma’s Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21.18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35.16. Following graduation he joined the coaching staff of Earl Clark Jr. and Kevin Donner as an assistant before being elevated to his current title in 1993. For the next two years, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field program and the women’s cross country team, while overseeing the men’s unit until Detroit Hall-of-Fame coach Earl Clark stepped down in 1995. As an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching five MCC individual track and field event champions as well as two MCC track and field Most Outstanding Performers, all while completing his master’s degree in sports administration at nearby Wayne State University. As a head coach, his teams have accrued many honors and championships, The men’s and women’s teams swept the 1996 indoor MCC titles. The women’s indoor squad also won back-to-back crowns in 1998 and ‘99, and took home the outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000. The men’s team took home a share of the indoor title in 2000, with the women bringing home another indoor crown in 2002 and

Guy Murray the men’s success in 2003 winning the outdoor title. In 2005, the Titan women were Horizon League runners-up. Teams that have been coached by Murray also excel in the classroom as the men’s squad was honored in 2004 by the USTFCCCA as it brought home the highest combined grade point average in the country. The trend continues as the men were honored for the seventh eighth-straight year in 2009, and the 11th time under coach Murray, as one of the nation’s All-Academic Teams. Their 3.42GPA was the highest among the four Horizon League teams on the academic list as well as the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored. The women received the academic for the second year in a row, and the 10th time since the award was first given out in 1995, after recording a 3.44 GPA. The GPA was the third highest out of the five conference teams honored and was also the second best out of the five Division I Michigan schools that made the mark. Individually, eight different Titans have been selected Academic All-America by the USTFCCCA: Kim Hemstreet (2002), Kim Jess (1995), Andrea Karpala (2003, 2004, 2005), Ryan Byrne (2005, 2008), Krista Switzer (2006), Sinisa Simic (2007) and Amanda Smith (2008). Two Murray-coached athletes have qualified for the NCAA National Championships in Hemstreet (2002, cross country) and Paul Caraballo (1997, Track and Field). Caraballo was named an NCAA All-American in 1997 after he placed seventh in the high jump. In all, four athletes have provisionally qualified for NCAA championship. Since its inception in 2003, the Titans have had a qualifier for the outdoor regional championship each year. In addition to his team’s successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women’s outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men’s outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women’s in 1994, ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and 2002 and men’s in ‘96 and 2000). Murray and his wife Patricia live in Redford with their nine-year-old daughter Kaitlin Renee and three-year old son Colin.

Emili Jackson returns for her fourth season as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country. At UDM, Jackson works primarily with the women’s distance runners in track as well as the women’s cross country team.
In July of 2007, she was certified as a USA Track & Field Level Two coach. She continues to run in her off time recently helping a team comprised mostly off UDM Alumni, staff and current Titans take ninth at the Great Lakes Relay in the summer of 2009.
In her three years with the cross country program, Jackson has helped tremendously, as the Titans’ capped off the 2008 season with five runners in the Great Lakes Regional for the first full scoring squad (32nd) since 2004. In 2009, UDM placed 29th with 882 points at the GLR.

Season Outlook While the UDM women’s cross country team is young, the opposite is true for the Titan male harriers as 10 upperclassmen, including seven seniors, comprise the 2010 Detroit men’s cross country roster. “The theme for this group is just putting everything together on the right day,” said Guy Murray, a former Titan harrier himself who enters his 18th year as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country. “We have had a lot of great races individually, but if we are able to have that great day at the right time, this group can leave here with a lot of accomplishments.” Senior Pat Liederbach leads the group of seniors as he looks to become just the second Titan to earn All-League four times as well as just the third runner in school history to finish in the top 100 at the regional four times. The reigning three-time Dominick Taddonio team MVP, Liederbach was the top finisher in all four races he competed in last year and posted his best regional finish of 60th with a 10K PR of 32:40. “Pat has been our great front runner, but there is still more left for him to accomplish,” said Murray. “His leadership has always been pretty steady, but with Pat, it’s about his health and right now, he is as healthy as he has been to start the year since he was a freshman.” Senior Alex Harris returns looking to continue the streak he started with a breakout junior year. Harris hit his 8k season best with a 26:14 at Bowling Green and then became just the 11th Titan to place in the top 100 at the NCAA Regional taking 81st. “It was the first season where Alex stayed healthy,” said Murray. “He has always had to deal with some injuries, but he was healthy and we both expect a big year out of him.” Seniors Ryan Ayala and Kevin Smalley have also been consistent varsity performers and scorers the last few years and both look for a big finish to their careers. Ayala ran in four races last year and has been a top five scorer for Detroit, while Smalley is regarded as one of the hardest workers who improved his regional run by over 20 spots to place 160th, finishing as the team’s No. 4 scorer.

“Both Ryan and Kevin have been scorers for us and I look for them to be right in the 2-5 range again. Kevin is one of the hardest workers we have ever had, and Ryan has the ability to run great for us.” Seniors Brian Greenhoe and Kevin Wozniak will also be back to add depth to the team. Greenhoe will be on the prowl for his first varsity letter and judging by his steeplechase performance as a junior, he could end his career on a high note. Wozniak has had the injury bug at times during his career, but he also has the talent to help the Titans, displayed by his top five scoring effort at the 2008 HL Championships. Derek Hoerman, Bob Radlich and Erik Westbrook all showcased fine seasons after redshirting as freshmen. Hoerman missed the first part of last year with an injury but ended up running in five races, including part of the NCAA regional squad. Radlich saw his 8k best improve by over a minute and a half going from 28:05 to 26:48, while Westbrook was in the scoring five all year , with his PR of 26:26 at Louisville.
2010 Detroit Cross Country Yearbook
Season Outlook “Keeping these guys healthy is the key,” Murray said. “Hoerman has the ability to run in the top five and Radlich has put in a lot of miles to get to where he is at today. Westbrook is a guy suited for cross country and he should continue his promising sophomore season.” Edwin Gay, a sophomore, was the big recruit that the men needed last year, but unfortunately injuries derailed his rookie year. Gay’s best time came at the National Catholic Championships where he ran a 26:49, but he did miss three races, including the HL Championship and the Great Lakes Regional. “He just had a tough freshman year, but he has looked great so far in the preseason,” said Murray. “He has a ton of potential and he is ready for a big year.” Three newcomers join the squad in sophomore Chris Smalley and freshmen Sam Felton and Martin Nelkie. Smalley did not compete in cross country last year, but did debut on the Titan track and field team. Felton took All-State honors as a senior, while Nelkie was a two-time regional champion and an AllState performer in his prep career. “Martin and Sam are good cross country runners who should fit in right away. Both should give the veterans a challenge for varsity spots.” added Murray. While a conference championship is always a goal, the Titans will look for this veteran group to compete and move into the top three alongside Butler and Loyola. Another goal that is in reach is to post the best finish ever for a Titan squad at the

Season Outlook The Detroit Titans women’s cross country team is still building their way back to the top of the Horizon League, but the 2010 harriers have a good mix of veterans and youth which should bode well for another step upward. “We definitely feel that we are going to take a step in the right direction and continue what we started last year,” said head coach Guy Murray, who enters his 18th year as the head coach of the Titans. “We are going to be a good pack team and will be improved, but there is not a lot of room for error. We do have more depth this year and that will help. Last year if any of our top five had an off night we really struggled, but with a good sophomore class as well as some talented rookies, we will be able to overcome those days.” UDM will have just three upperclassmen on the squad, with two of those harriers multiple varsity letterwinners. Senior Kristie Ferrans will be back as the team’s leader and one of the main varsity runners. A former team MVP as a sophomore, Ferrans ran under 20 minutes in one race last year, the Greater Louisville Classic. She then posted her best finish at the Horizon League Championships by 20 spots taking 34th in 20:39. Fellow senior Megan Miller returns for her final season on the course as she looks to earn her first varsity letter, while fellow “Kristie was a big recruit for us when she came here as she is a true cross country runner who loves the sport,” Murray said. “She has been a big reason that the team has improved, especially in attitude and the whole atmosphere around the program. I know Kristie has some big races in her and is capable of a big year if she is able to put it all together.” Junior Kirstin Mooney is back and will help with the depth of the team. Mooney set her personal record in the 5k with a 20:14 at the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, one of three races she clocked under 21, on her way to getting under 20. “She can be a key for us and has performed well in the offseason, coming in as the top finisher in our time trial. She trains hard and works hard and she puts in the miles so I expect her to continue to improve and be a steady varsity performer,” added Murray.

UDM’s season will rely on the youth of the underclassmen, particularly the five-man sophomore class. The group is led by Alexandria Vintevoghel, the highest returning Titan runner at the Horizon League Championship (25th) and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (175th).Vintevoghel was the Coach’s Award winner last year after posting five sub-20 times in her first five collegiate races, including her seasonbest best 5k of 19:19 at the Michigan Intercollegiate. “I think Alexandria is ready to assume a leadership role after a very strong freshman year,” said Murray. “Getting into the top 20 at the HL is the next step for her. She is another true cross country runner like Kristie (Ferrans) and she has the talent to be the front runner we need.” Three other sophomores ran well in the varsity seven for much of last year in Sarah Martinez, Katrina Oberski and Katie Weishaar. Martinez was consistently in the 21-minute range last year after coming off an injury in high school. Oberski had five runs under 21 and was the fifth runner for UDM at last year’s HL championship, while Weishaar improved tremendously throughout the year going from a season-opening 24:10 in the 5k at the Golden
2010 Detroit Cross Country Yearbook
Season Outlook Grizzly Open to a 20:57 at Louisville and a time of 22:01 at the conference meet. Another second-year runner, Tressanique Hampton, will also look to get herself started after missing all of last year due to nagging injuries. “Oberski was a consistent varsity performer for us at the fourth and fifth spot and now she has a year under her,” quoted Murray. Katie showed some good signs as the year went on and I really like the way Sarah is running right now. I think she is ready for a big year after coming off some injury issues in high school, and she is definitely capable of being a top five scorer for us.” Four freshmen will vie for spots on the varsity crew in Katelyn Cnossen,Victoria Eger, Rachel Hofsess and Cecilia Pope. Cnossen was an All-State runner as a sophomore.Victoria twice earned All-State accolades, while Hofsess was a state qualifier twice. Pope was an 800-meter runner in high school will need to get into the cross country mix. “I think this class has the ability to fit into the top five,” said Murray. “Katelyn,Victoria and Rachel have all run under 20 before so it will really depend on how fast they adjust to the speed of the training and college racing.”
“The team had a great race at the Horizon League championships last year and you can see that we were right there in the middle of the pack,” said Murray. “The goal is to move up from that sixth-place Detroit took sixth at last year’s conference championship with 146 points, just three behind fifth finish and get into the top five as well as top 25 in place UIC and 30 points in back of Youngstown State. the regional. With a team this young, we are still putting the building blocks together, but everything With the talented sophomore class ready to make a big contribution, the Titans will look to move back we have done so far in the preseason says we are on pace for being an improved team.” into the top five of the standings in the conference as well as a move up at the NCAA Regional.

The 2010 edition marks the 24th straight year UDM has hosted the event, which is held in a beautiful setting at Cass Benton State Park in Northville. Alumni/Titan Support The Detroit Titans cross country and track & field program has always maintained a strong relationship with alumni. At the 2009 Horizon League Cross Country Championships, hosted by Detroit at Kensington Metropark, a group of welldecorated Titan harriers were on hand and presented the final awards at the conclusion of the event.
Patrick Liederbach earned second team All-League honors in 2009 and his award was presented by former Titan and All-Horizon League performer Jim Furkis.
The Titans have plenty of support from family, friends and studentathletes, demonstrated here by UDM women’s lacrosse players Emily Boissonneault and Megan Wallace, who came out to cheer on Detroit at the 2009 Horizon League Championships.

Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building,Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY
Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history.Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Strength/Conditioning The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the studentathlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Weight Room, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is
assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when Nick Wilson Joe Tofferi developing a Asst. Strength Asst. Academics/Compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “studentathlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits.
Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its studentathletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Amy Paling Steve Corder Coordinator’s Asst. Dir. of Asst. AD for post. Since the NCAA Compliance/ position was created, UDM’s Compliance Academic Cord. graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other studentathletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University. The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Titan Hall Of Fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Titan football team as a unit. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 8625 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007. Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first year, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track. Gaither is also leading a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice field for soccer and lacrosse. Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.
72
While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a PeerReview Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. Gaither also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association. She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the director of athletics at UDM. Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior in UDM’s pre-dentistry program, and Kennedy (12).
