Head Coach
Heading into his 18th season as the leader of the Titans, Lupenec was the rst Horizon League coach to reach the career 100-win plateau. He reached that mark on Sept. 3, 2003 with a 3-0 victory over Bowling Green. He is also the only current head coach at UDM to have recorded a win in NCAA Tournament play. Throughout his tenure at UDM, he has continually shown the ability to combine his coaching and playing experience into a winning formula. He has registered impressive triumphs over such regional powers as Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Texas A&M during his 17 seasons.
As the only head coach in the 18-year history of the Titan women’s soccer program, Mike Lupenec - the dean of Horizon League coaches - has seen the Titans rise from a rst-year Division I squad to a premier power in the Horizon League. Lupenec enters the season as the conference’s active coaching leader in overall victories with 155. His Titans reached new heights in recent years, reaching the Horizon League championship game four times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006) in the last seven years. In addition to three runner-up nishes, the Titans brought home the league’s tallest trophy in 2004, defeating Youngstown State, Green Bay and Milwaukee – and giving up just one goal in the process – to move on to the NCAA Tournament. There, Detroit scored a stunning victory over Michigan in the opening game before falling to sixth-ranked Ohio State in the second round of the tourney. His team nished that year with 14 victories, just one shy of the school record. That 2004 title was the second league championship Lupenec’s team has delivered to UDM, as they also won in 1995, winning 15 games to establish a school record that was equaled a year later. His Titans also won a regular-season co-championship in 1996. He has twice (2000 and 2005) been voted league Coach of the Year by his peers. Lupenec’s student-athletes have earned 52 AllHorizon League selections, including three HL Player of the Year accolades. Five Titans have been named ESPN Academic All-District IV with Mary Parker in 2006 earning CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican and NSCAA/adidas College Woman Scholar All-America in 2006.

When he came to UDM in 1991, Lupenec rst served as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program for two seasons, including the 1992 campaign where he joined forces with his twin brother and former Titan men’s head coach Morris. When the opportunity to begin a women’s program on the Division I level arose, Lupenec was there to take on the challenge. He was also closely involved in the planning of UDM’s new articial surface soccer/track facility, which was completed in the fall of 2007. It was only tting that Lupenec, who has built the Titans from the ground up, would lead his team to the eld’s rst ever Titan victory as the women’s soccer team blanked Youngstown State 4-0. A native of Welland, ON, Lupenec is a 1986 graduate of nearby Oakland University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in human resource and development. He and his twin brother played soccer for the Pioneers (as they were known then) from 1981-83, with Morris a star forward and Mike a starting defender. The 1982 team was the rst in school history to make the NCAA Division II semi-nals, and the following year OU posted an 18-3 record, the best in school history. Lupenec continued his soccer career after college, playing professionally in Canada with the Windsor Wheels. Not only has he been successful coaching on the collegiate level, but also on the club level, where he has won several national championships. His Vardar U-17 squad was the rst in the history of Michigan to claim both outdoor and indoor national titles. The 48-year-old Lupenec and his wife Lydia are the proud parents of three children – Alexa, Mark and Julianna. The family resides in Macomb Township.

Season Preview
Growing pains were an issue for the Detroit Titans women’s soccer team last year as a young Titan squad went through some hardships both offensively and in the win column. But a year a later, those freshmen and sophomores now have a full season behind them, even two, and with the start of a new campaign, expectations are starting to rise for the red, white and blue.
“Goaltending and goal scoring is the key to any team and I believe we have that this year,” said head coach Mike Lupenec as he enters his 18th season at the helm of the Titans. “Sometimes, I think you have to fall down a hill in order to get hungry again and so far, this team looks like they are ready to go out there and compete.” The Titans return 12 letterwinners, including an experienced backline that will guide UDM as its young scoring unit takes shape. Three former AllHorizon League Newcomer team members are also back in senior Alauna Pierce , junior Alexandra Suschak and sophomore Nina Carter. “I think the junior class is as good as we have had here and with their leadership and work ethic, we will turn things around,” said Lupenec. “They have a bit of a sour taste in their mouth and as a staff, we do too. We all want to get back to winning and I really believe the junior class with the team chemistry they have built, can get us back in the thick of things.”
Nina Carter led Detroit with three goals in her freshmen campaign.

Defense The strength of the Titan team returns virtually intact with the defensive backeld thanks to senior Alauna Pierce and juniors Alexandra Suschak and
Alyssa Korson. Suschak, who has two goals and three assists in her career, was named to the AllNewcomer team as a freshman and last year took home Titan Defensive Player of the Year and Team MVP honors. Pierce was also a member of the HL All-Newcomer team as a sophomore and Korson has started every game in the last two years for UDM, adding a marker and three helpers from the back. “I think Alauna and Alexandra are two of the best center backs in the league and I feel they have been over looked and do not get the credit they deserve,” said Lupenec. “If you look at our team last year, we didn’t give up that many goals and they are two of the biggest reasons why our defense stands out.” The defense doesn’t stop there as junior Rebecca Pidgeon, who notched a pair of goals as a sophomore, is back to add more game experience as well as sophomores Mary Leone, Rebekah Dornbos and Sarah Dzuris, who will rotate between the mideld and backline. Newcomer Jessica LaBond, who knows a thing or two about good defense after playing at Lake Orion on a Dragons squad that allowed just 17 goals in the last two years (33 games), was also brought in to add depth. “I really like the way Mary has looked in camp in the right full back position. Her tness level and aggressiveness has denitely improved and her ability to deliver the diagonal ball in the air makes her a great t for that spot.” Forward Along with the mideld, the forward position needs to nd the back of the net more often for the Titans to turn their fortune around and the 2010 team does have some good young scoring options. Sophomore Nina Carter, an All-Horizon League Newcomer honoree as a rookie, returns as the leading goal scorer with three tallies a year ago. Junior Alison Suschak is back with a goal and four assists in her career and sophomore Janae Paveglio will drop down to the unit as well.

Season Preview
“I think we will look for the sophomores to take charge more as they have a year under their belt and understand what Division I soccer is all about,” said Lupenec. “With Nina and some of our newcomers, we now have the speed to get behind teams and break down a team defense. We saw Alexandra Suschak, a that in our exhibitwo-year starter, is back tions against two to lead a tough Titan good MAC schools defensive unit. and now we just have to nish those scoring chances. ” Freshman Kaitlyn Quarrell was also brought in to add athleticism to the team and will see time at both the mideld and the forward slot. Newcomers Megan McLalin and Abby McCollum are also two freshmen who are coming off great prep careers, with McCollum netting 80 goals in her career, including 40 as a senior. “Kaitlyn has quick feet and is skilled and I believe she can be one of the best players in the conference and one of the best players I have ever recruited,” said Lupenec. “Once Abby catches on to the speed of college soccer, she will be a real force for us.”
Mideld If the Titans are going to turn it around offensively, the mideld will be a big key to the Detroit success as the unit returns a lot of experienced players. Lauren Roffey has played in all 36 games in her Titan career, with 35 starts, and is primed to breakout in her junior season. Senior Archana Wadhawan, and second-year players, Dornbos, Dzuris and Paveglio all saw action in a majority of the season last year, with Leone starting 15 contests and Dornbos and Dzuris getting the starting assignment on 12 occasions.
Dzuris netted two goals as a rookie and Roffey has a goal and an assist in her career, but that is all the points the members of the mideld have in their careers. McLalin will also get a look at the mideld slot. “Megan and Sarah will be more of a defensive mideld for us as we will move Lauren to move of an offensive position,” Lupenec said. “It will give Lauren more of a role in the offense. She is a great passer and also a good shooter and with her, Nina, Kaitlyn and Janae, we will have more re power then we have had in the past.” Goalkeepers There was a great deal of competition for the starting spot in the net as junior Joanna Hinde and freshmen Nora Abolins and Emily Oberheim fought for the right to start the year as the Titan goalkeeper. Abolins emerged from the unit as the starter heading into the rst week of play, but with three talented net minders on the roster, the push for the starting job will be on display at every practice. “I feel Nora has more experience and is very calm out there,” said Lupenec. “She is also good with her feet and can pass the ball. I just feel that the team has really responded with Nora as the starter, but both Emily and Joanna are right there practicing hard every day.” Abolins was a rising star on the club level in Ontario with the Toronto Junior Lady Lynx and was part of the Olympic Development program, while Oberheim was a two-time All-District and an All-Region performer in her last two years of high school. Hinde is coming off a season in which she led the Horizon League with 99 saves as a sophomore and has over 150 career stops, including seven shutouts, to her credit. “Good teams have good goalkeepers and one of the things we wanted to do was improve every area in competition and with three goalies here constantly pushing each other, that is just going to make us a better team,” added Lupenec.

Titan Field
The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus soccer-track facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old naturalgrass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf eld, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and eld events.
The rst event held in the new facility was a women’s soccer match against Wright State, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The Titans’ Trina Kochanski scored the new eld’s rst goal just 20 minutes into the contest. Two weeks later, the women would post the rst Titan victory in the updated facility with a 4-0 blanking of Youngstown State. The eld is also utilized by the UDM men’s and women’s track and eld program as well as the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the only Division I programs in the state of Michigan. Phase 2 of the project, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,5003,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for ofces, locker rooms and storage. “The construction of our new synthetic eld and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-
athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.” An auxiliary natural grass eld was also added in the last two years and will be fully operational in the fall of 2010. The eld is adjacent to the Titan Tennis Complex courts along Faireld Street. The multi-purpose playing eld will serve as a practice site for UDM’s soccer and lacrosse programs.

Horizon League Entering its 32nd season of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an afliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and eld, outdoor track and eld and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and eld, outdoor track and eld, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the rst time in League history,

women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with ofces in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national ofce. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Horizon League ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The Horizon League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past ve years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s rst at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the rst round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 200608), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 200506). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s rst NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-seven student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2009-10, while 10 earned Academic All-America honors. COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several
League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, studentathletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast Horizon League cancer, diabetes and Commissioner hurricane relief, while Jon LeCrone hosting blood drives, 19th Year neighborhood cleanups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, ofcials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include ve of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience. VISIBILITY The Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with a number of initiatives. The League is in a three-year agreement with ESPN that includes selected regular-season men’s basketball action (ESPN2) and the men’s championship game (ESPN) and features increased exposures each year on ESPNU plus inclusion in the annual O’Reilly ESPNU BracketBusters, one of college basketball’s premier in-season events.

Strength &Conditioning The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the student-athlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efcient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the studentathlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing eld. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certied strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which
allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a Joe Tofferi Nick Wilson program that Asst. AD for Asst. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

Academics/Compliance Academics/ Compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes rst, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students rst, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory.
UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the rst of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all student-athletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, student-athletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches student-athletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good nutritional habits.
Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its studentathletes’ academic excellence is the Athletic Academic Steve Corder Amy Paling Coordinator’s Asst. AD for Asst. Dir. of post. Since the NCAA Compliance/ position was created, UDM’s Compliance Academic Cord. graduation rate for student-athletes has steadily risen. Assistant Athletic Director For NCAA Compliance Steve Corder, no stranger to collegiate athletics as he played soccer for Detroit from 1994-98, and his staff carefully track each Titan’s academic progress to make sure they are on the right path toward graduation. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. The University of Detroit Mercy is committed to the principles of institutional control in operating our athletic department. We are responsible for adhering to the rules, regulations and spirit of the NCAA, Horizon League and the University. The University of Detroit Mercy Compliance Ofce directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Titan Hall Of Fame
UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those studentathletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010.
The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball AllAmericans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affectionately known L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, during their playing days Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad – as well as the 1960 Titan Phillips, Cassandra Pack) football team as a unit. The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class is inducted at halftime of the men’s Additionally, the beautiful basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26. new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would ll the arena’s main oor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career eld goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the rst team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team nished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and eld (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007. Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her rst year, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf eld and track. Gaither also led a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball ofce suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice eld for soccer and lacrosse. Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the nance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.

While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certication, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certication process. Shortly after the University received its full certication in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. Gaither also participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Ofce for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference ofces, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience.
