Sunny Jones: Ashland, 2000, 3rd Season Career Record: 57-119-1 (4 Years) UDM Record: 10-76 (2 Years) SUNNY JONES Sunny Jones will begin her third year as the head coach of the Detroit Titan softball team in the upcoming 2011-12 season. Jones served as the assistant softball coach at Toledo for three seasons prior to joining Detroit taking on her new position July 1, 2009. “Coach Jones has a wealth of experience as a coach, and she was standout college player as well. Her leadership as a coach and recruiter, at many different levels, has been tremendous. As a player, her competitiveness and talent garnered her numerous national awards and nominations. She knows what it takes to win, and I am confident that she’ll take this program to the next level,” said athletic director Keri Gaither. Prior to her stint on the Toledo staff, where she served as the Rockets’ recruiting and scouting coordinator, Jones served as head softball coach at Hillsdale College. During the two seasons with the Chargers, Jones racked up 47 victories and guided the team to back-to-back appearances in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. Her initial collegiate experience came as an interim head coach/

in 1999 and was also invited to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team tryouts the same year. In addition, she was named the GLIAC Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997.
“I’m looking forward to moving this program in a competitive direction. I feel that this year’s focus needs to be improvement every game and team consistency. We have players that thrive on winning and that’s the kind of attitude that is necessary to win,” stated Jones.
Following her collegiate career, Jones played professionally for the Akron Racers of the WPSL in 1999, while serving as the lead hitting instructor at the Doug Gillis Softball Academy before entering the college coaching ranks.
A 2000 Ashland University graduate who majored in Physical Education and Health Education, Jones was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year as a senior in 1999 and earned first-team AllAmerica honors as a centerfielder in each of her four seasons with the Eagles (1996-1999). 2011 Review The 2011 Titan softball team completed its second season under the helm of head coach Sunny Jones as she fielded a roster of three juniors, one sophomore and nine freshmen. 10 players were new to the team as Jones brought in junior college transfer Whitney Stratton from Muskegon Community College. The young Titans were looking to improve on a 2010 season which saw Detroit score 64 runs total and finish 3-39 overall, including 0-24 in the Horizon League. The 2011 team did just that with a 7-37 overall record and a 2-20 league mark. The Titans surpassed last season’s run total in the 23rd game of the season and finished with 126 on the year. The team started the year with 12 contests in the Rebel Spring Games held in Kissimmee, Fla. Detroit’s first win of the year came in game two of the season with a 2-1 victory over Indiana State on the strength of a freshman Erin Huddleston’s two-RBI single and Karyn McCarty’s five-hit, one unearned run pitching performance. The second win of the season was arguably the biggest of the year as Detroit faced an 8-2 deficit heading into the top of the seventh inning. That seventh saw nine straight Titans come to the plate to start the frame and Detroit finished the inning with two hit-by-pitches, six hits, two walks, and a fielder’s choice for eight runs resulting in the biggest Titan seventh-inning comeback win since a 9-5 road win on May 1, 2008 over Michigan State.
The Titans would finish the Rebel Games with just 10 games, due to rainouts but a 4-6 record on the trip surpassed last season’s win total early. Detroit would take three more wins the rest of the season although there were numerous games where the team was still close until the end. Two big conference wins came on April 30 in a doubleheader sweep over last year’s Horizon League champion Wright State. The Titans had a pair of walk-off victories with a 6-5 win on an opposing error in the opener and a Rachel Copple basesloaded RBI single to center in the second game for a 7-6 win.
2011 Review Copple led the team with a .317 average on the year and Huddleston finished behind her at .286 while leading the team with six home runs and 20 RBI. Huddleston’s .309 average in 20 Horizon League games was also a team-high. Located on the northwest side of campus, the ballpark features stadium stea ng for fans, as well as one of the best natural grass fields in the Horizon League. In recent years, the facility has connued to expand with the upgrading of both dugouts and the addi on of a scoreboard. This past fall, the dugouts were enhanced and enlarged. Fences in front of the dugouts were erected as part of an overall field enhancement. For the 2011 season, more updates came for the ballpark as a new press box was constructed, the field received new dirt on both the infield and warning track, and also new wind screens featuring the Titan logo were added in March 2011. In the summer of 2008, the field received a new bullpen and hi ng cage area thanks to the man who the facility is named a er, Roger Buysse. “All of the praise goes to Roger for his contribu ons to our program. We would not have what we have if it weren’t for his con nued generosity,” said so ball head coach Sunny Jones.
BUYSSE BALLPARK The bullpen and hi ng cage area is located down the le field line at Buysse Ballpark, just past the home dugout, making it easily accessible for prac ce and in-game use. The bullpen sec on features throwing lanes complete with a ne ed back-stop in which two pitchers can warm up. The hi ng cage is divided into three individual sec ons which are enclosed by ne ng with extra room at the beginning of the area, allowing players to use mul ple sta ons at the same me. “With the playing surface now finished and the addi on of the press box, and the wind screens coming for the 2011 season, Buysse will become a place where players want to play and ” added Jones. “I am pleased with our facili es and believe with the con nued changes to improve it, we are turning our home field into one of the be er fields in the Horizon League.”
2011 featured a new press box

Assoc. VP & Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as University of Detroit Mercy’s Director of Athle cs in May of 2007, less than six months a er being asked to serve as Interim Director of Athle cs. Soon a er taking the helm of Titan athle cs, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addi on of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis, all of which began play in 2008-09. In her first two years, Gaither also expanded the athle c staff by adding eight full- me posi ons to the department, directed the building and comple on of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthe c turf field and track, and was responsible for the hiring of men’s basketball coach Ray McCallum, women’s basketball coach Autumn Rademacher, and so ball coach Sunny Jones. Gaither recently completed a successful fundraising campaign for the renova on of the men’s basketball office suite and recently completed tennis complex that includes eight new tennis courts, a tennis pavilion and a new grass prac ce field for the lacrosse and soccer teams. Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athle cs when she was appointed to the University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans Athle c Department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the Senior Associate Athle c Director. During her tenure as Senior Associate A.D., Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementa on of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selec on as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administra ve roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athle cs including s nts as Senior Woman Administrator and Director of Business Opera ons. Gaither Chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Commi ee (DLOC) for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four which was played in front of a record-se ng crowd of 72,922 at Ford Field in Detroit as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host ins tu on. As the DLOC Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ul mate responsibility for the local opera ons of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same posi on, in addi on to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Execu ve Council, Gaither is ac vely involved with League opera ons. She currently serves on the League’s Men’s Basketball Strategic Planning Commi ee and has served on both the finance and television commi ees. In July of 2010, Gaither was appointed a new member of the Execu ve Commi ee of the Division I-AAA Athle cs Directors Associa on. She is one of just 13 members serving on the Execu ve Commi ee, which works on behalf of the membership of the D1-AAA, in addi on to its President and five other officers. Gaither was also appointed to the NCAA Minority Opportuni es and Interests Commi ee (MOIC) in September of 2009. As one of six Division I members on the 15-person commi ee, Gaither is currently in year two of a four-year term. The MOIC was formed to review issues related to
the interests of ethnic minori es and women with a focus on educa on and welfare of minority student-athletes, as well as the enhancement of opportuni es for ethnic minori es and women in coaching, athle cs administra on, officia ng and the NCAA governance structure. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribu on toward the growth and development of students as the Director of Athle cs at UDM. Gaither was also honored in September of 2008 when she was named one of Crain’s Detroit Business’ “2008 Women to Watch” for her goals and ini a ves in the Detroit Titans athle cs program and her leadership in serving as chair of Detroit’s Local Organizing Commi ee for the 2009 NCAA Final Four. While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Commi ee for NCAA Athle c Cer fica on, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athle c Welfare Sub-Commi ee and was designated the campus liaison during the cer fica on process. Shortly a er the University received its full cer fica on in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. She also par cipated as a member of the Tourism Ac on Group (TAG) Hospitality Commi ee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Conven on & Visitor Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All Star Game, Super Bowl XL, as well as future major events. In 2006, the Titan AD completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Ins tute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportuni es and Interests Commi ee. The Leadership Ins tute, designed to address the cri cal shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member ins tu ons and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering commi ee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athle cs and recently assisted in coordina ng its na onal leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of the Na onal Associa on of Collegiate Directors of Athle cs (NACDA), the Na onal Associa on of Collegiate Women Athle c Administrators (NACWAA), the Minority Opportuni es Athle c Associa on (MOAA), and the Black Coaches Associa on (BCA). Gradua ng magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two- me recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Ellio (20), a junior at the University of Detroit Mercy majoring in Engineering, and daughter Kennedy (14).

Titan Hall of Fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradi on of Titan Athle cs. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest addi ons made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induc on dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball AllAmericans, Terry Tyler and John Long – or Thunder and Lightning, as they were affec onately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Addi onally, the beau ful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induc on dinner.
L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class was inducted at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Wright State on Jan. 26, 2010.
Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later.
Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s s ll the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all- me Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induc on dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience cap vated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the post-World War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinna and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induc on class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).
