Head Coach Guy Murray Guy Murray enters his 17th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case. In the last two years, Murray has once again put the cross country teams back into title considerations with the women running their first full scoring squad since 2004 at last year’s NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The men posted their first top 20 appearance since 1998 as well as its sixth best team score in a regional in school history in the same event, led by junior Pat Liederbach, who was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team after finishing eighth at the HL Championships, becoming just the fifth Titan in school history to receive multiple conference honors in their career. A four-year letter winner on the Titans cross country and track teams from 1985-89, Murray graduated Magna Cum Laude from Detroit with a bachelor of science degree in computer science in May of 1989. At Detroit, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the University of Detroit’s President’s Award, the athletic department’s highest honor, for top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the AllMCC Track and Field Team in 1989. He was an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the marathon in 1999 after he finished 19th at the Grandma’s Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21.18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35.16. Following graduation he joined the coaching staff of Earl Clark and Kevin Donner as an assistant before being elevated to his current title in 1993. For the next two years, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field program and the women’s cross country team, while overseeing the men’s unit until Detroit Hall-of-Fame coach Earl Clark stepped down in 1995. As an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching five MCC individual track and field event champions as well as two MCC track and field Most Outstanding Performers, all while completing his master’s degree in sports administration at nearby Wayne State University. As a head coach, his teams have accrued many honors and championships, The men’s and women’s teams swept the 1996 indoor MCC titles. The women’s indoor squad also won back to back crowns in 1998 and ‘99, and took home the outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000. The men’s team took home a share of the indoor title in 2000, with the women bringing home another indoor crown in 2002 and the men’s success in 2003 winning the outdoor title. In 2005, the Titan women were Horizon League runners-up. Teams that have been coached by Murray also excel in the classroom as the men’s squad was honored in 2004 by
2
the USTFCCCA as it brought home the highest combined grade point average in the country. The trend continued in 2008 as the men were honored for the seventh straight year after ending the season with a 3.44 GPA, a mark that was the highest of all four Horizon League teams on the academic team. The Titans also had the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored as well as the 12th highest GPA in the country. The women received the distinction in 2008 after recording a 3.155 GPA. It was the first time since 2004 that the women have earned the accolade. UDM was also one of four conference teams as well as programs from the state of Michigan to receive the accolade Individually, eight different Titans have been selected Academic All-America by the USTFCCCA: Kim Hemstreet (2002), Kim Jess (1995), Andrea Karpala (2003, 2004, 2005), Ryan Byrne (2005, 2008), Krista Switzer (2006), Sinisa Simic (2007) and Amanda Smith (2008). Two Murray-coached athletes have qualified for the NCAA National Championships in Hemstreet (2002, cross country) and Paul Caraballo (1997, Track and Field). Caraballo was named an NCAA All-American in 1997 after he placed seventh in the high jump. In all, four athletes have provisionally qualified for NCAA championship. Since its inception in 2003, the Titans have had a qualifier for the outdoor regional championship each year. In addition to his team’s successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women’s outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men’s outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women’s in 1994, ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and 2002 and men’s in ‘96 and 2000). Murray and his wife Patricia live in Redford with their eight-year-old daughter Kaitlin Renee and two-year son Colin.

Asst. Coach Emili Jackson Emili Jackson is in her third year as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country at Detroit. At UDM, Jackson works primarily with the women’s distance runners in track as well as the women’s cross country team. In her two years with the Titan women’s cross country program, Jackson has helped the women’s team tremendously, as the Titans’ capped off the 2008 season with five runners in the Great Lakes Regional 6k race, the first full scoring squad on the women’s side since 2004. She has helped form a strong building block for the future with the addition of nine runners in the last two years, including 2008 Titan Cross Country Rookie of the Year Kristina Arko. She began her coaching career in strength and conditioning at Wayne State in 2004. She then added two years (2005-07) of track and field/cross country coaching experience at Salesian High School in Richmond, CA. There, she coached two state meet qualifiers, including one state champion. In July of 2007, she was certified as a USA Track & Field Level Two coach. She continues to run in her off time recently helping a team comprised mostly off UDM Alumni, staff and current Titans to take ninth at the Great Lakes Relay. Jackson graduated from Central Michigan in 2003 after running both cross country and track for the Chippewas. She currently resides with her husband, Matthew, in Royal Oak.

Men’s Season Preview Thanks to a standout junior class, Detroit returns 14 harriers from a squad that had its first top 20 finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals in 10 years. “We are very excited about this season,” said head coach Guy Murray. “On paper, we have five guys capable of running under 26:00, with three already in Liederbach, Vanias and Harris, and if we can perform what our stats and training says we should, the ultimate challenge in any sport, then we could have the best season in Titan history.” The seven-member junior class is comprised of two-time All-Horizon League honoree Patrick Liederbach, Marcus Acuna, Ryan Ayala, Brian Greenhoe, Alex Harris, Matt Mahler and Kevin Smalley. “The junior class is the heart and soul of this team and they all go out there train hard and push each other to their limits,” Murray said. “It’s a group that I have been pushing really hard because they have the talent and this group has the attitude that they want to be the best Titan team ever.” Liederbach earned his second straight Dominick Taddonio team MVP award after taking eighth in the conference championships and 93rd at the NCAA Regional. He is just the fifth Titan to have two top 100 finishes at the regionals and became just the third runner in school history to break 25 minutes with his 24:54 effort at Louisville. “Pat is definitely our leader and he gives us a real presence as our front runner,” said Murray. “You need that guy out in front capable of giving you a low number. Pat usually starts a little slow, but hopefully this year he will pick it up a little faster, because the next step for him to become an elite runner is even harder and we need him to get that extra step to help the team.” Acuna redshirted last year, but finished fifth on the squad in the conference and regional championships as a freshman. Ayala dropped his PR by over a minute last season, while Greenhoe has continued to make significant strides. “Both Marcus and Brian have shown flashes of being able to make a positive contribution,” said Murray. “Ryan has done a good job developing and now its time to put it together and really shine and be a key ingredient on this team.” Harris set career bests twice last season, including getting under 26:00 with a 25:40 at Louisville. Smalley continued to make progress in his second year, resulting in improvements by over a minute on every course, while Mahler returns from battling the injury bug in his first two seasons. “Alex has the talent to be in our top five, but he just needs to stay healthy,” said Murray. “Smalley is the hardest working guy on the team. He is the type of kid that earns everything he gets and he sets the bar in practice with everybody that he is always ready, while Matt will look to rebound from two injury-plagued seasons.” Alex Gould and Kevin Wozniak are two seniors who have had their moments. Gould was named the Most Improved runner after improving his 8k PR by over two minutes, while Wozniak ran a career best in four races last season. “Alex just quietly puts in the time and effort every day and had really turned himself from an 800m track runner to
UDM CROSS COUNTRY
someone who will be a threat to the varsity squad this year,” commented Murray. “Kevin is a team guy who works hard and is another runner who needs to stay healthy in order to really give us his full impact.” Alex Vanias will look to pick up right where he left off as the reigning Titan Rookie of the Year. He was the Titans’ top finisher at the NCAA Regional taking 79th, the third best ever finish by a Kevin Smalley rookie Titan runner as well as the tenth best finish in school history. He also became just the 14th UDM harrier to place in the top 100. “We knew that Alex would be a top five guy for us as a freshman, but he was even more consistent than I would have thought throughout the year, actually finishing as our top runner at the regionals,” commented Murray. Four other talented sophomores, Derek Hoerman, Rob Radlich, Gregg Saldutti and Erik Westbrook, all return to add depth and competition to the varsity seven. “Westbrook had a rough rookie year, but he really worked hard this summer and was the top guy in our pre-season trials,” said Murray. “Sometimes, the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores so Erik along with Derek, Rob and Gregg all have a year under their belt and are healthy and ready to go out there and compete.” The lone newcomer to the squad is freshman Edwin Gay, an All-State performer in high school who placed fourth in the state championship as a senior. “He is an impact guy who projects to be a 26-flat runner so that will really help fill out our lineup,” said Murray. Detroit will look to get back atop the HL standings, but with the usual crowd of Butler and Loyola, UDM will look for that extra momentum with its home crowd behind them at the conference championships hosted by the Titans in Kensington Metropark. “We would really like to break into that top three in the Horizon League and make all those guys work even harder to stay there,” said Murray. “As far as the regionals go, the best Titan finish is 16th and we placed 19th last season and as we look ahead, we have our work cut out for us but we have the talent, so its our goal to get into the top 15 and have the best finish ever for the Titans.”

Women’s Season Preview An air of optimism surrounds the women’s team after the Titans ran their first full-scoring squad at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships since 2004 last season. Nine runners return from that squad and with the addition of five freshmen, UDM is looking to continue its way up the Horizon League standings. “I think the team is ready to make the improvements that we have been trying to make the last few years,” said head coach Guy Murray. “We have a nice group of veterans returning and we have a number of freshmen that we believe can make an instant impact giving us a solid top five.” One of the veteran runners returning is Kristie Ferrans, a junior who was named the Titans’ Rookie of the Year as a freshman and then the team’s MVP last season. She led the Titans in four races last season, earning her 5k personal record with a 19:26 time at the Greater Louisville Classic. “Kristie is definitely the team leader for us,” said Murray. “She is a true runner who would be out there running even if she wasn’t on the team. She trains hard and sets the tempo for everybody to follow.” Tressanique Hampton, Sarah Martinez, Katrina Oberski, Alexandria Vintevoghel and Katie Weishaar are the five rookies who will look to crack the Detroit line-up. Hampton and Weishaar are both coming off superb prep careers as distance runners in high school track, while Martinez, Oberski and Vintevoghel were all state cross country qualifiers in high school. “One of the biggest differences with the team this year is that we have a lot of true cross country runners, especially our freshmen, so having that really gives us a boost,” said Murray. “Right now Tressanique and Katie are battling some injuries so we need to get them healthy, but I feel that Sarah, Katrina and Alexandria should really be in our top 7, if not our top 5 this season.” The four-member sophomore class is another reason Detroit believes it will climb up the conference standings. Kristina Arko was named the Titans Rookie of the Year after posting the team’s best time for a newcomer with a 19:50 performance in her collegiate debut at the National Catholic Championships. Stephanie Rossman was a top five scorer in every race last season, while Kirstin Mooney was steady throughout the season. Rachel Hall is also back after redshirting as a freshman. “Stephanie was pretty much our number two runner all last season,” said Murray. “Keeping Kristina healthy is the key for her as she started out great, but struggled at the end, while Kirstin has the potential to score for us and really showed a lot in her first season with us.” Four seniors will also vie to stay in the line-up, but most importantly, the quartet will help guide the Titans’ underclassmen. Chrissy Bieling, Jennifer DeFauw, Betea Gorzynska and Megan Miller have all been with Titans’ cross country and track program for three years so their leadership will be their most important asset. In particular, DeFauw has been the most accomplished
16
runner since joining the team two years ago in what was her first career attempt in competing in cross country. Last season, she took home the Coaches Award after posting three career best performances during the season, including finishing as the top team runner on two occasions. “Jen really came on strong in the middle of the Jennifer DeFauw season and I look for her to continue that upward trend and give us a good year,” said Murray. “She has come so far from a half-miler basketball player all the way to a cross country runner.” Bieling earned a PR last season when she nearly ran under the 20:00 mark with a 20:04 at the Greater Louisville Classic, while Gorzynski has been a steady performer throughout her career. Miller has yet to run on the varsity seven in cross country, but she has scored for the Titans in the conference indoor and outdoor track and field championships. While coach Murray serves as the Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, he has really left the women’s team under the guidance of third-year coach Emili Jackson, a move that he says is paying off everyday. “Emili has done a great job with the women since she has come aboard,” said Murray. “She has done a great job of making it a team atmosphere and environment, and now she has a number of athletes she recruited and the veterans are used to her system so I think it will all pay off with a great year.” On the docket for 2009 are the challenges at the National Catholic and Michigan Intercollegiate Championships, but one of the real highlights will be the Horizon League Championships hosted by Detroit in Kensington Metropark on Halloween. With that said, expectations for the year will also be raised. “Well with hosting the Horizon League Championship, I would love to really finish in the top three in front of our fans and alumni and move on to a great Regional finish,” said Murray. “One of our benchmarks is breaking 20:00 and last year we had four runners do that, just never in the same race. On paper we have five, six runners who can do that so if we can pull that off, regardless of where we finish in the race, we will have a great day and a successful year.”

Her decorated career included three All-Horizon League accolades, as well as the magical 2002 season that saw her win the Horizon League Championship in 17:33, taking home HL Athlete of the Year honors. She moved onto the NCAA Great Lakes Regional finishing 12th in 21:45 and then earned a top 100 finish at the NCAA Division I Championships with a time of 21:13. She capped off that season showing her true Titan student-athlete character by being named to the USTFCCA All-Academic team.
Bonnie (Fitzpatrick) Wood 2007 Titan Hall of Inductee In 2007, Bonnie (Fitzpatrick) Wood became the first female cross country and track and field star to be inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame. Cross Country Invitational 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Cross Country Invitational One of the fine traditions of the UDM cross country program is the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational. This year marks the 23rd straight year of the event, held in a beautiful setting at Cass Benton State Park in Northville. Horizon League Entering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance studentathletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 200205, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years

Horizon League earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Horizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-five student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2008-09, while eight earned Academic All-America honors. COMMUNITY SERVICE In addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. In addition, several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIP One of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by studentathletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICS Horizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top

Facilities The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM student-athletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past two years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Four new Olympic style platforms, three squat racks and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The Titan strength and conditioning staff has also hosted the Motor City Strength & Conditioning Clinic the last two years. The clinic helped to educate and provide further awareness in the field of strength and conditioning. The speakers have included Javair Gillett, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator of the Detroit Tigers, Jason Arapoff, Director of Physical Development for the Detroit Lion’s and Tom Palumbo, Associate Strength and Conditioning Coach at Ohio State University to name a few. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current Philadelphia 76ers’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason, and before the Tigers hit Florida for

spring training in 2009, starting pitcher Nate Robertson visited Calihan Hall to train with the staff. The Titans have a number of training courses available to them as they pursue the Horizon League Championship. UDM has two main cross country courses that they run on throughout the year, and will host an event on each course in 2009. One course is Cass Benton State Park in Northville, the site for the Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, located just off I-96 and a short drive from campus. The course provides an extensive challenge as it is one of the oldest and hilliest areas of Hines Park. The beautiful park was established in the 1920’s and was a gift to the Park Trustees by Cassius Benton, a former Wayne County Road Commissioner. Detroit also utilizes Kensington Metro Park in Milford, where UDM will host the 2009 Horizon League Championship. Kensington is 4,481 acres featuring a wooded hilly terrain that surrounds beautiful Kent Lake. Each year more then two and a half million visitors will make their way to Kensington
