Last season was a historic one as the men’s tennis team returned to varsity status for the first time since 1995. The roster featured two transfer juniors and five freshmen under the guidance of first-year head coach Grant Asher. UDM quickly got back into the swing of things winning three singles flight titles and a doubles championship in its first ever event in the fall. Detroit posted an impressive fall campaign taking 34 of 63 matches with five championships as well as a doubles title. From there, Detroit went on to post five victories, including a 4-3 Horizon League win over Youngstown State, its first conference dual win since 1993. UDM was led by junior netter Pjotrs Necajevs who exploded on the scene for the Titan men’s program, going 25-4 in singles, including a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play, all at the No. 1 position. He also claimed another 13 total victories in doubles and was honored as the Horizon League’s Newcomer and Player of the Year. becoming the first men’s tennis player in league history to win both accolades in the same season. Junior Patrick Troy was a calming influence on the young team garnering a 9-13 singles mark, mostly at No. 2, before a shoulder injury ended his year. Before that,

he was partners with freshman Nick Tolomei and the duo recorded a team-best 13-11 tally, winning the only doubles championship in the fall, while reaching the finals of Flight D at Ball State. Tolomei would also put forth a strong rookie season in singles finishing third on the squad with an 11-15 record, while fellow classmate Dustin Goldenberg Pjotrs Necajevs, along with UIC’s was second on the Mariya Kovaleva, were honored team with 12 wins. at the HL tennis banquet as the conference’s Newcomers and Players of the Year.
