Head Coach Guy Murray Guy Murray enters his 17th season at the University of Detroit Mercy where he serves as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for both the men and women. A Titan fan from his day as a standout runner, Murray has already accounted for nine conference championships in the Titan trophy case. A four-year letter winner on the Titans cross country and track teams from 1985-89, Murray graduated Magna Cum Laude from Detroit with a bachelor of science degree in computer science in May of 1989. At Detroit, he won the Dominick Taddonio Cross Country MVP award in 1988 and the University of Detroit’s President’s Award, the athletic department’s highest honor, for top senior student-athlete in 1989. He was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Cross Country Team in 1986 and the All-MCC Track and Field Team in 1989. He was an Olympic Trial Qualifier in the marathon in 1999 after he finished 19th at the Grandma’s Marathon with a personal best time of 2:21.18. At the Olympic Trials in 2000, Murray placed 57th, with a mark of 2:35.16 Following graduation he joined the coaching staff of Earl Clark and Kevin Donner as an assistant before being elevated to his current title in 1993. For the next two years, he was the head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field program and the women’s cross country team, while overseeing the men’s unit until Detroit Hall-of-Fame coach Earl Clark stepped down in 1995. As an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching five MCC individual track and field event champions as well as two MCC track and field Most Outstanding Performers, all while completing his master’s degree in sports administration at nearby Wayne State University. As a head coach, his teams have accrued many honors and championships, The men’s and women’s teams swept the 1996 indoor MCC titles. The women’s indoor squad also won back to back crowns in 1998 and ‘99, and took home the outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000. The men’s team took home a share of the indoor title in 2000, with the women bringing home another indoor crown in 2002 and the men’s success in 2003 winning the outdoor title. In 2005, the Titan women were Horizon League runners-up.
Teams that have been coached by Murray also excel in the classroom as the men’s squad was honored in 2004 by the USTFCCCA as it brought home the highest combined grade point average in the country. The trend continued in 2008 as the men were honored for the seventh straight year after ending the season with a 3.44 GPA, a mark that was the highest of all four Horizon League teams on the academic team. The Titans also had the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored as well as the 12th highest GPA in the country. In track, both the Titan men’s and women’s programs have been recognized by the USTFCCCA as one of the nation’s AllAcademic Scholar Teams of the Year. The women in particular have earned the distinction every year since the accolade was first announced in 2002. Individually, eight different Titans have been selected Academic All-America by the USTFCCCA: Kim Hemstreet (2002), Kim Jess (1995), Andrea Karpala (2003, 2004, 2005), Ryan Byrne (2005, 2008), Krista Switzer (2006), Sinisa Simic (2007) and Amanda Smith (2008). Two Murray-coached athletes have qualified for the NCAA National Championships in Hemstreet (2002, cross country) and Paul Caraballo (1997, Track and Field). Caraballo was named an NCAA All-American in 1997 after he placed seventh in the high jump. In all, four athletes have provisionally qualified for NCAA championship. Since its inception in 2003, the Titans have had a qualifier for the outdoor regional championship each year. In addition to his team’s successes, Murray has been named league Coach of the Year for women’s outdoor track twice (1999, 2000), men’s outdoor once (2003) and seven times for his indoor success (women’s in 1994, ‘96, ‘98, ‘99 and 2002 and men’s in ‘96 and 2000). Murray and his wife Patricia live in Redford with their eightyear-old daughter Kaitlin Renee and two-year son Colin.
Recently, Murray has once again put the cross country teams back into title considerations. The men posted their first top 20 appearance since 1998 as well as its sixth best team score in a regional in school history in 2008, led by junior Pat Liederbach, who was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team after finishing eighth at the HL Championships, becoming just the fifth Titan in school history to receive multiple conference honors in their career.

Assistant Coaches Richard Alexander is in his third year as an assistant coach, with his primary duties with the T Titan sprinters, hurdlers and j jumpers, while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Alexander’s efforts can already be seen on the men’s side as junior Earnest Cleary was named the HL’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2007. Four of his athletes have won HL individual titles to move to NCAA Regional competeition in Amanda Smith (400mH-2008), Ryan Byrne (400mH-2008), Lesley Hanna (Indoor 400m-2009) and Cleary (Outdoor 100m-2009). Alexander came to UDM from Fairleigh Dickinson where, as an assistant coach from 2005-07, he mentored a pair of NCAA Regional qualifiers, as well as two conference champions. He assisted in all facets of the program, specializing in the development of sprinters, jumpers and hurdlers. He started his coaching career at Wagner College (200305) as a graduate assistant. At Wagner, Alexander coached the 2003 conference champion in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, a 2004 and 2005 IC4A qualifier in the indoor and outdoor high jump, four All-NEC performers and nine school record holders. He graduated from Bucknell in 2003 after earning four varsity letters in track and field. A two-year team captain, he earned All-Patriot League honors and was runner-up in the 110 high hurdles in 2002. He also is the school recordholder in the 60 high hurdles and is in the top-ten all-time in 55 high hurdles, 110 high hurdles and 400 intermediate hurdles. Alexander and his wife, Monique, reside in Farmington Hills.
Emili Jackson returns for her third season as an assistant coach for track and field and cross country. At UDM, Jackson works primarily with the women’s distance runners in track as well as the women’s cross country team. In her three years with the cross country program, Jackson has helped tremendously, as the Titans’ capped off the 2008 season with five runners in the Great Lakes Regional for the first full scoring squad (32nd) since 2004. In 2009, UDM placed 29th with 882 points at the GLR. She began her coaching career in strength and conditioning at Wayne State in 2004. She then added two years (2005-07) of track and field/cross country coaching experience at Salesian High School in Richmond, CA. There, she coached two state meet qualifiers, including one state champion. In July of 2007, she was certified as a USA Track & Field Level Two coach. She continues to run in her off time recently helping a team comprised mostly off UDM Alumni, staff and current Titans take ninth at the Great Lakes Relay in the summer of 2009. Jackson graduated from Central Michigan in 2003 after running both cross country and track. She currently resides with her husband, Matthew, in Royal Oak.

Men’s Season Preview SPRINTS The Titans have a very talented and accomplished junior class with All-Horizon League sprinters Lesley Hanna and Earnest Cleary. Hanna won the HL indoor 400m and was second in the 200 as a sophomore, while Cleary won the 100m in the outdoors last year and was the league’s Newcomer of the Year in running events as a freshman.
indoor 5000m. Junior Matt Mahler was another scorer in the indoor meet taking fifth in the mile and 800m, while junior Kevin Smalley was just outside the scoring range in the steeplechase. Senior Alex Gould will look for the same kind of breakthrough season in his final track year as he did in cross country and will help the 800m, 1500m as well as distance medley. If senior Kevin Wozniak can overtime some injuries and junior Alex Harris can stay healthy, both of those runners will give Detroit a boost along with sophomore Alex Vanias, who redshirted a year ago, but has been a top runner for two seasons in cross country.
“Earnest and Lesley are working hard to improve and everyone in the HL returns so it won’t be easy,” quoted Murray. “They are both engineering majors which is very challenging off the track, so they really need to focus to improve to stay atop the HL as well as achieve on the NCAA level as we think they can.” Seniors Deonte Osayande and Sam Jones along with sophomores Vushaun Landrum and Joe LaRocca will also add to this group, while freshman Joseph Raffin will bring some very good depth. Osayande scored in the HL indoor 60m and outdoor 100, while Landrum had a great rookie season finishing third indoors in the 60m and fourth in the outdoor 200m. Jones is a key member to the Titan relays. “The sprint group is our strength and we need guys to be close to the top in its events,” said Murray. “I am expecting a big sophomore season out of Vushaun as he had a great experience at the Canadian juniors over the summer. If we can keep Deonte healthy, then he will get things done too.” HURDLES Sophomore Aviram Campbell is back to anchor the hurdles after a freshman year that saw him take fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, sixth in the 60mH and seventh in the 400mH. He will be joined in the group by freshmen Derek Baker, Anthony Donald, Taylor Hennrick and Vince Lefler. Baker and Lefler were both regional champions in the 300-meter hurdles, as well as high hurdle state qualifiers. While Hennrick was a state qualifier in the both hurdle races and Donald was a two time 300mH Ohio regional qualifier. “Aviram did a very nice job as a freshman, really figuring things out quickly and improving every week,” said Murray. “He is another sophomore that I believe will have a big year and I think the freshmen competition on the team will only help him.” DISTANCE The group, just like in cross country, will be led by junior Pat Liederbach, who scored in three events at last season’s Horizon League championships, including a third-place finish in the
6
“Alex Vanias didn’t run at all last year in track, but the way he finished cross country, he is a contender to score in the outdoors, while Alex Harris has shown flashes of great things when healthy,” commented Murray. “Pat had some great races last year at Horizon League time, but Butler’s distance runners don’t make it easy so everyone has to go out there and earn it.” “The middle distances should be better after what Alex Gould showed in cross country joining with Kevin and Matt,” added Murray. The squad will also feature junior Brian Greenhoe and sophomores Derek Hoerman, Bob Radlich and Erik Westbrook and newcomers in Edwin Gay and Chris Smalley. “We need to get them healthy and get everyone running good races on the same day,” said Murray. “Those were the two biggest problems in cross country with this group, but there is no doubt that this is a talented squad ready to breakout.” JUMPS This unit might be the most improved on the men’s side with sophomores Aviram Campbell back in the triple jump and Vushaun Landrum nearly scoring in the long. Junior Lesley Hanna will also fill in the high jump, but two freshmen should also make an impact in Ja’Quan Patterson, a runner-up in the long jump as a senior at the Division 2 championships, and Jeffrey Senecal, an Ohio Division 3 regional scorer as a junior and senior in the high jump as well as a regional qualifier in the long jump. “Vushaun and Aviram did a nice job for us last year,” said Murray. “Now with Ja’Quan in the mix, he gives us a long jump threat that will contribute right away and has the potential in the triple jump. Jeffrey also has the potential to impact us as he was well coached in high school and now it’s just a matter getting stronger and jumping higher.”

2009-10 DETROIT TRACK & FIELD YEARBOOK
Women’s Season Preview THROWS When there is just one member of a group, you better have a good one and that is what Detroit has in senior Brittany Horne. The lone thrower on the squad is the defending champion in the hammer, while earning All-Horizon League second team honors with a runner-up effort in the shot put. Horne owns top 10 marks in the UDM record books in the discus, hammer, shot put and weight.
week. Seniors Jennifer DeFauw and Beata Gorzynska, junior Kristie Ferrans and sophomore Kristina Arko and Stephanie Rossman all return for UDM.
“Brittany was our MVP last year and we are going to need her to continue to be our MVP,” said head coach Guy Murray.
Ferrans earned two ninth-place efforts, just outside of scoring ranks, in the 5000 and 10000m at last year’s outdoor league meet, while Rossman was just behind her in the 5000m
MULTI The Titans will have a pair of veterans to compete in the heptathlon and pentathlon. Seniors Ashley Schinske and Chantel Henry will be back along with sophomore Amanda Campbell. Schinske is the school record holder in both events and was a second team AllHorizon League performer in 2007, finishing runner-up in the heptathlon. Last year, Schinske took fourth in that event and fifth in the pentathlon at the Horizon League Championships. “A big year out of Ashley will really help because if she is doing well in the multi’s, that means we can break down some of those events and she is contributing there as well,” said Murray. Henry owns top 10 marks in both events and was eighth in the HL heptathlon a year ago, while Campbell improved throughout the year to take ninth in both events at the conference meet, while breaking the UDM rookie record in pentathlon. SPRINTS Junior Sequoyia Calhoun is back to lead a talented but young sprint group. Calhoun, a Horizon League scorer in the indoor and outdoor 400m, will be looked at to help offset the graduation loss of perennial HL scorer Tiffany James. Senior Megan Miller will also help out the group as she was HL 400m finalist last year and scored in the event as a sophomore. “Sequoyia is very talented and she scored in the Horizon League as an underclassman and she needs to take that next step and be a positive leader for us,” said Murray. “Megan is a great one lap competitor and will be a key part of the 4x400m once again.” The rest of the group will be young with rookies Nikia Duncan, Amanda Hollern, Shannon Marchant, Taylor Ragland, Lindsay Smetzler and Melissa Zuteck . DISTANCE The Titans return a number of veteran distance runners with most of the group coming off a very successful cross country season where they made improvements throughout every
DeFauw, who has only indoor eligibility left, just missed scoring in the mile last year, but was part of two scoring relays in the distance medley and 4x400m. Gorzynska was the Titans’ top runner in cross country and placed eighth in the HL steeple last year.
“The group really ran well at the cross country championships and we are close to doing some very good things, but the competition is very good in the league,” said Murray. “For the seniors, we really need this group to go out with their best since the league is very tough in the distances.” Some of the newcomers that already showed their potential in cross country are Tressanique Hampton, Sarah Martinez, Katrina Oberski, Alexandria Vintevoghel and Katie Weishaar. Vintevoghel was in the top three in every Titan race, while Oberski was a top-five performer in cross country. HURDLES Senior Katie Taylor and junior Kirstin Mooney lead the group that will be bolstered with the addition of freshmen Olivia Smid and Sharonda Vesey. Both Taylor and Mooney scored in the HL outdoor 400-meter hurdles last year and own top 10 marks in the event in school history. Smid ended a great prep career seventh in Michigan D3 300mH championships, while Vesey was a D1 100mH qualifier and a 300mH regional scorer as a senior “The hurdles will be improved from last year with Sharonda and Olivia adding to two HL scorers in Katie and Kirstin,” said Murray. “The group has a good blend of veterans and rookies.” JUMPS Sophomore Susan Kalkstein is the only veteran returning to this group after a fine freshman campaign where she just missed scoring in the triple jump in both the HL indoors and outdoors. Sophomore Monica Betker also returns at the pole vault, while Brianna Soule, fourth in the long jump as a senior at the Michigan Division 1 state championships, and Whitney Rogers, a Division 3 long jump champion as a junior, will bolster this group. “Susan did a real nice job for us as a freshman but the league was so tough she couldn’t score for us,” said Murray. “I expect her to have a good sophomore season. Brianna and Whitney were top jumpers in high school who we hope can come in here and make an impact.”

2010 Hall Of Fame Class Homecoming 2010, held on Jan. 23, brought countless alumni back to UDM over the weekend to take part in special activities all over campus but, for a select group, it meant even more. That’s because 10 new members were inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Wright State. The group included two former track and field stars in Ken Dubois and Kim Jess, as well as four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack from women’s basketball , Titan baseball’s Pat Adams and Mike Pesci, Adam Walicki for men’s golf and tennis’ Maria Pandele. UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. Together, the new inductees brought the number of greats in the Hall of Fame to 112. “It was a very special day, recognizing the University’s rich tradition of tremendous student-athletes and their accomplishments. We were honored to welcome into the Hall of Fame this elite group of athletes who shaped the Detroit Titans athletics history,” UDM athletic director Keri Gaither said. KEN DUBOIS Cross Country/Track and Field, 1984-88 A long distance specialist who capped off his career by finishing runner-up at the 1987 MCC cross country championship and 31st at the Great Lakes Regional… Was a three-time All-MCC cross country runner… Also excelled on the track and set the school record for 5,000 meters as a senior… Received the 1988 Cecil Coleman Medal of Honor as the MCC’s most outstanding senior male studentathlete… Was selected a CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican in 1987 and ’88. Ken Dubois: “I am honored to be inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to compete at the collegiate level in a h kf l to C h (E l) Cl h opportunity, i and d to great sport that I love, while pursuing a great education. I am thankful Coach (Earl) Clarkk ffor the my teammates and classmates for the camaraderie and many valuable experiences. I have many fond memories of my time as a student and athlete at U of D.” KIM JESS Track and Field, 1994-98 A high jump specialist who won four Horizon League indoor championships (1994, ’95, ’96 and ’98) during her career… Established a new conference record (1.73m) at the 1995 league meet… Set the school record (5’10½”) as a sophomore… Was an NCAA provisional qualifier in 1995 and again in 1996… Also competed in the triple jump as a Titan and set the school record (34’9”) during her junior season at UDM… Was selected to the USTCA AllAcademic Team… Kim Jess: “I was quite shocked when Keri told me the Hall of Fame news and at the same time very honored. I enjoyed my five years as a Titan, except that injury plagued year, of course. I will always remember the great teammates and coaches as well as other athletes and professors that each had a part in making me who I am. I hope the Titans of today cherish the time they have there as you can’t go back, but you will always have those experiences to remember going forward.”

Facilities University of Detroit Mercy Strength & Conditioning Department The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the studentathlete improve physically and mentally in their respective sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The Strength and Conditioning Staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field. Each team will have a designated time in the weight room that will be scheduled by the coaches and also the Strength and Conditioning Staff. Once this scheduled time is set there are no exceptions for an individual to be late or miss completely. Student-athletes must contact their Strength Coach and also their Head Coach, prior to the scheduled time, if there is a time conflict. No team will ever work in the weight room without the supervision of one or more members of the Strength and Conditioning Staff. The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM studentathletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches, as well as two intern assistants. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing

a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past two years, the fitness center has expanded by over 400 square feet. Four new Olympic style platforms, three squat racks and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The Titans also utilize two practice facilities inside Calihan Hall. The Thelma Fox Murray Running Track allows the UDM student-athletes to train indoors during the winter season. The Titan throwers also can practice inside Calihan Hall on the lower level. The area is big enough for the field competitors to continue to train as they make their way up to the top of the Horizon League standings.

Titan Field ni and students from UDM and OU haved raced in the mile as well as competed for the “Fastest Man on Campus Competition” by running the 100-meters. Kids can also get in on the action with games going on in mid-field as well as in a race against Tommy Titan and the Grizzly.
The UDM athletic department proudly unveiled its new, on-campus soccer-track facility in October of 2007. The new facility is on the site of the old natural-grass Titan Field, and includes an A-Turf field, along with a six-lane polyurethane track and areas for the steeplechase and field events. The first event held on the field was a women’s soccer match against Wright State, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The first track and field event was on April 17, 2008, when the Detroit Titans hosted Oakland University in the 3rd Annual UDM-OU Duals. This season, when the Titans and Golden Grizzlies get togther on April 15, will mark the fifth year of the UDMOU series and the third to be contested on campus. The event features such events as the steeplechase, as well as gives the fans a chance to participate in the action. Alum-
The annual dual is not the only highlight that the track has seen in its young existence. On April 3, 2009, fans in the Metro Detroit area witnessed an Olympian run in a race as 2008 Canadian team member Nate Brannen competed in the Elite Mile, presented by RunMichigan.com, during Detroit’s Track & Field Classic. Titan Field completed the first phase in the transformation of an elite facility. Phase 2 of the project, when completed in the future, will include stadium seating for 2,500-3,000 fans, concession stands, rest rooms, a press box, new scoreboard, lights and a building with space for offices, locker rooms and storage. “The construction of our new synthetic field and track is another big step forward for the Titan Athletics Program. I am excited that our student-athletes and coaches, who work so hard day in and day out, will have the on-campus facilities they need to train and compete,” Titans athletic director Keri Gaither said. “The University’s substantial commitment for the new facilities is a critical component of our sport expansion plans.”
