Attention: Media Members and Opposing Schools Since the consolidation of the University of Detroit and Mercy College in 1990, UDM athletic teams have found themselves referred to in many different forms. In order to maintain consistency, we ask that the media continue to refer to us as UDM -- or use Detroit or Detroit Titans -- and eliminate the use of such abbreviations as U-D, U of D Mercy, Detroit Mercy, University of Detroit, etc. When refering to Detroit women's intercollegiate athletic teams, please do not use the term "Lady Titans". All of our teams should be called the Titans. Thank you for your cooperation and your continuing coverage of the Detroit Titans.
The 2010-11 UDM Women’s Tennis Yearbook is a production of the Detroit Sports Information Department. The guide was written and designed by Sports Information Assistant Joel Walrath and edited by the Sports Information Department. Photos by Tim Busch and UDM Sports Info.

Men’s Tennis Coaching Staff Sam Poole enters his second year at the helm of the Titan women’s tennis program after setting the bar pretty high in his first season. He was presented a challenge in taking over a team that just set its single season win total with 15 and advanced to its first Horizon League Championship match in school history. Four seniors and three starters also departed after the year leaving Detroit in a rebuilding mode to start the 2009-10 season and a seven match losing streak would open the campaign.
Sam Poole (2nd Year) Wayne State, ‘07 UDM Record 10-12 (1 Year) Career Record 10-12 (1 Year)
Detroit rebounded to win nine of their next 12, advancing to their second straight HL title match. Detroit was 6-2 in the conference and had three victories by way of a 7-0 sweep en route to a 10-win season. Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa was named the HL’s Newcomer of the Year as well to the first team All-League, while sophomore Amanda Cornwell garnered second team accolades. Poole joined the Titan Athletic Department as assistant women’s tennis coach during the 2007-08 season, and was elevated to head coach on May 4, 2009. A product of Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Poole played collegiately at Eastern Michigan University until the men’s tennis program at EMU was discontinued. He then transferred to Chicago State, where he competed for just one season prior to returning to Detroit. Poole ultimately finished his bachelor’s degree in education at Wayne State in 2007. The 31-year old Detroit native is addicted to the sport he knows and loves, and he traveled all over the country with dozens of junior players prior to settling back down in southeast Michigan. He has worked with a myriad of players at all levels during the past 10 years, with experience at Grosse Pointe’s Hunt Club, Wimbledon Racquet Club and Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. “Sam has a unique coaching style, and he pushes our student-athletes from start to finish in every practice,” former UDM head coach Daron Montgomery noted. “He brings energy, enthusiasm and passion to the program. I think he has a lot to offer to the sport of college tennis. His local roots make him a perfect fit for Titan tennis.” Poole, who teaches full-time at Detroit’s Midtown Academy, is one of three children. He has a brother (Kristopher) and a sister (Samantha).

Men’s Tennis Coaching Staff One of the most highly decorated players in Horizon League history returned to Detroit, this time as a coach as Pjotrs Necajevs was named a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s tennis teams for the 2010-11 campaign. “Pjotrs was a great player for us, but it was not just about the results he gave us on the court. He really helped our young players grow and get ready for the college game during his two years and to be able to keep him around is great for the program,” said men’s head coach Grant Asher. Necajevs is involved in on-court coaching as well as providing assistance to both the men’s and women’s programs in regards to recruiting, practice schedules, travel coordination, budget and equipment purchases. He will also assist with day-to-day office administration for both teams and help the Athletic Department in the areas of marketing and promotions, group ticket sales and assist with the department’s special events.
Graduate Assistant Coach Pjotrs Necajevs
Necajevs ended his two-year Titan career as just the third player in Horizon League history to win backto-back Player of the Year awards after going 30-4 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the conference as a senior. He dominated conference play again with six of his seven wins in straight-set sweeps. In his Motor City career, he was 55-8 in singles, all from the top position, with a 14-0 record in conference meets. He was the team MVP twice and earned the 2009 Titan Newcomer award at the annual UDM President’s Athletic and Academic Honors Luncheon. Off the court, he was a member of Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC), and earned academic honors by being named to the UDM Athletic Director’s Honor Roll twice as well as to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll. As a senior, he also received the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes student-athletes who display admirable conduct both on and off the courts. Necajevs graduated from the University in May, 2010, with Bachelor’s Degree in Business and is currently enrolled in UDM’s MBA program.

2010-11 Season Outlook Detroit Titans 2010 Record - 10-12 2010 Horizon League Record- 6-2 (3rd) Letterwinners lost - 3 Newcomers - 3 The Titans finished 10-12 overall last year and 6-2 in the conference and took down Green Bay 4-0 and Cleveland State 4-1, in the first and second rounds of the Horizon League Tournament respectively, reaching the Horizon League Championship match for the second consecutive year and falling to a tough UIC team both years. Detroit’s 2011 team features the return of last year’s Horizon League Newcomer of the Year in sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa. Espinsosa went 12-9 in last year’s dual season, including 6-2 in Horizon League matches. Junior Amanda Cornwell led the Titans in 2010 with a 14-8 mark including a 7-1 conference record to pace the team. Cornwell posted a 5-7 mark this past fall including a win in both singles and doubles against conference foe Cleveland State in the third of Detroit’s most recent four fall tournaments. “To me the fall isn’t about winning or losing, it’s about seeing who gets out of a match, whether it’s a win or loss, to see if they can handle the school, the traveling and just being a good student athlete here at UDM,” stated head coach Sam Poole now in his second year as coach of the Titans. Erin Weldon returns and will be the lone senior on this year’s squad. With 63 career singles victories, she currently sits in fifth place overall in UDM women’s history behind Maria Pandele (1998-2001) and her 77 total wins. Weldon, Cornwell, and junior Melanie Capuano are the upperclassmen representatives on the roster. Espinosa is the lone sophomore while three freshmen were added to the mix over the summer and look to add depth to the lineup. Julia Fernandes, Raina Halabi, and Elena Strakhova are the newcomers to join Detroit. Poole is looking for them to be able to step in and for the returners to help the transition period.

2010-11 Season Outlook
2010-11 Detroit Titans “We have a big sister program where if you see someone who needs help, you pick up the slack,” said Poole. “There are new people you have to train and get implemented to the system, but I’m glad we have a fall season different than other sports to help. I think tennis is really special in that we can play three or four tournaments in the fall and watch and work with your team. The two things I enforce at the end of every practice include being ready to practice and play hard and getting good grades.” The season will see the Titans play its home matches at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield and also host a pair of April matches on the UDM campus at the Titan Tennis Complex (weather pending). Detroit kicks off its 2011 dual season Sunday, January 23 at Michigan State followed by a match at Eastern Michigan before opening the home portion of the schedule on April 30 against IPFW. This year’s schedule will feature 22 matches with six at home to be played at the Franklin Athletic Club or at the Titan Tennis Complex on the UDM McNichols campus.

2009-10 Season Review Detroit ended the 2008-09 season with a school record 15 victories and the team’s first-ever appearance in the Horizon League Championship match. UDM followed that up in 2009-10 and finished 10-12 overall and 6-2 in the Horizon League. Detroit started the year dropping seven straight and nine of its first 10 matches. The first dual win of the year came in the eighth match of the season with a 6-1 mark over Southeast Missouri State. A struggle through the next two match-ups brought the Titans into the conference season with Detroit dropping the doubles point at Wright State. However, the tables started to turn as the Titans rallied to win five of the six singles matches and take a 5-2 victory over the Raiders. That day sparked the Titans to conference wins over Butler and Valparaiso before UIC upended Detroit 5-1. The Titans got right back on the winning path with two straight 6-0 wins against Oakland and Green Bay respectively, followed by a win at Milwaukee. A 4-2 setback to Cleveland State and 5-1 win over the Penguins of Youngstown State brought the regular season campaign to a close. The Titans won 7-of-9 to close the year and finish third in the Horizon League with that 6-2 mark. Detroit then took down Green Bay 4-0 in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament and won the rematch with Cleveland State 4-1, in the second round of the Tournament reaching the Horizon League Championship. It was the second consecutive year the Titans were in the final match and also the second consecutive year against UIC. The regular season match saw the Flames take a 5-1 win over the Titans and the championship game saw the Flames take the title with a 4-0 win leaving the Titans still in search of their first ever women’s tennis Horizon League Championship. In the 2009 Championship, UIC won 4-1. Two newcomers made an immediate impact helping UDM rise back to the top of the conference in HL Newcomer of the Year and first team AllHorizon League selection Carolina Salas Espinosa and second team All-HL honoree Amanda Cornwell.

Tennis Facilities The outdoor home of the Detroit Titans opened on Sept. 13, 2008 when the new Titan Tennis Complex, located immediately south of Calihan Hall, was unveiled. Nearly a year after Titan Field was rennovated, Detroit welcomed a new varsity tennis complex, featuring eight hard courts and a viewing pavilion, as well as an additional athletic field. The 4,000-square-foot covered pavilion is located at the north end of the facility. The venue also serves as home for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School & Academy boy’s tennis team, as U of D Jesuit was a major financial contributor to the overall project. A formal blessing of the new tennis complex was conducted by UDM President Fr. Gerard Stockhausen, S.J. In attendance were members of the women’s and new men’s tennis teams, their families, UDM staff and many of the donors who made construction of the
Titan Tennis Complex new facility possible. The complex features eight varsity courts and a 4,000-square-foot viewing pavilion. TMP Architecture (Bloomfield Hills) served as the lead architect for the project, while The Monahan Company (Eastpointe) served as general contractor.

Horizon League Entering its 32nd season of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broadbased athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance studentathletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, wom-

en’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest nonmerger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.

Horizon League ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The Horizon League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past five years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the first round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In addition, several League men’s basketball coaches coached barefoot to support Samaritan’s Feet, and the League’s schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball championship. Strength & Conditioning The main goal of the Strength and Conditioning Department is to help the studentathlete improve physically and mentally in their respected sport. This will be accomplished in such a way that is safe and efficient for each individual athlete. As the student-athlete participates in these activities we will work to lessen the possibility of injury or re-injury. If an injury should occur, we will work with the Sports Medicine Staff and the student-athlete to complete rehabilitation. Each team will have an individualized program based on their particular sport. Each program takes into account the intensity level, the physical demands, and skill involved in each individual sport and also each individual student-athlete. All teams and individuals will be subject to performance tests that will help design each program and also will help to determine the success of the program. The strength and conditioning staff will work with each individual coach at all times. Each coach will receive updated attendance, evaluation, and comments on a
regular basis about each student-athlete. Communication is the key to success in the weight room and on the playing field.

The Titans condition and train in the Larry Bleach Fitness Center, located in Calihan Hall. All UDM studentathletes are trained under the supervision of two full-time certified strength and conditioning coaches. Every member of the Titan strength and conditioning staff is assigned a team, which allows daily interaction between the athletes and the coaches. Such interaction is a tremendous asset when developing a program that best serves the athlete and the team. In the past three years, the fitness center expanded by over 400 square feet. Olympic style platforms, squat racks, stretch and other auxiliary speed equipment have also been added, all designed and implemented to improve the Titans’ speed and power. The center also features the ONS Performance nutritional shake, which is designed to help every athlete recover from training and conditioning with a supplement increase in their protein and carbohydrate intake. The UDM strength and conditioning staff has not only helped the Titan student-athletes, but professional athletes as well. UDM graduate and current New Orleans Hornets’ guard Willie Green comes back to use the facilities during the offseason as well as major league pitcher and former Tiger Nate Robertson.

Academics/Compliance When talking about students who compete in a varsity sport, the term typically used is “student-athlete.” The word “student” comes first, and that’s the way the University of Detroit Mercy approaches all of its athletic team members. Although performance in competition is important, they are students first, and athletes second, with their performance in the classroom plenty important in Titan Territory. UDM’s Center for Student-Athlete Development, one of the first of its kind, offers programs for academic classes, drug education, student enhancement and works to improve communication skills. All 19 varsity teams are encouraged to take full advantage of the programs offered at the center. The center also heads up the NCAA Life Skills Program, which focuses on the student in student-athlete and how to deal with issues that all studentathletes today must face. Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos, studentathletes are made aware of issues such as gambling and drug and alcohol abuse, and how to deal with these concerns. The center is made possible, in part, by a grant from the NCAA. In conjunction with the staff of the University Learning Center, members of the center’s staff teach UAS 107, “Athletes in Transition,” each year. All freshman and transfer student-athletes must take this course during their studies at UDM. The course deals with how student-athletes can make the transition from high school to college. This important class teaches studentathletes to deal with time and stress management, study skills and the importance of good
nutritional habits. Another example of Detroit’s commitment to its student-athletes’ academ- Steve Corder Amy Paling ic excellence Asst. AD for Asst. In addition, student-athletes are helped with their tutorial needs through the use of the student-run Learning Center, where professors and students donate their time as tutors. The student-athletes’ academic progress is closely monitored and study table is set up to assist the Titans with any and all academic areas, including providing tutors and a writing lab. The center is open daily and also has evening hours to work around a student-athlete’s busy schedule. All freshmen must take part in the study table, as well as other student-athletes who have not yet achieved a 2.75 GPA. Titan Hall Of Fame UDM established its Sports Hall of Fame in 1977 in order to honor those studentathletes, coaches and administrators who have helped develop the successful tradition of Titan Athletics. The Hall of Fame now has 112 members, following the 10 latest additions made on Homecoming Weekend on Jan. 26, 2010. The 2002 induction dinner was truly one to remember. The inductees included two of the Titans’ former basketball All-Americans, L-R: Adam Walicki, Joe Kopicki, Kim Jess, Pat Adams, Ken Dubois, Mike Pesci, Maria Pandele (Not Pictured: Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips, Cassandra Pack) Terry Tyler and John The 2010 Titan Hall of Fame Class was inducted at halftime of the men’s basketball Long – or Thunder game against Wright State on Jan. 26. and Lightning, as they were affectionately known during their playing days – as well as the 1960 Titan football team as a unit. Additionally, the beautiful new Hall of Fame display in the Calihan Hall lobby was unveiled that night for a crowd which would fill the arena’s main floor during the induction dinner. Long and Tyler were part of one of the winningest eras of Titan basketball, having helped their team to an 86-25 record over their four years combined. They helped the Titans to an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977, and an NIT appearance one year later. Long was the only player ever to lead the Titans in scoring for four straight varsity seasons, and he’s still the second-leading point producer in school history. Tyler, meanwhile, is the all-time Detroit leader for blocked shots in a game, a season and a career. He is also second in career field goal percentage and sixth in scoring. The pair’s old coach, none other than Dick Vitale, was the keynote speaker at his former players’ induction dinner. The present-day ESPN/ABC telecaster kept the audience captivated for more than an hour with his memories of coaching the Titans. The 1960 football squad became the first team ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame en masse. That team finished the season 7-2 – the winningest U-D record of the postWorld War II era. Two of those victories, over Cincinnati and Xavier, came by shutout. Future pro stars Larry Vargo, Bruce Maher, Steve Stonebreaker and Jerry Gross were all part of the 1960 Titan roster. The most recent induction class included four former basketball players – Joe Kopicki, Jermaine Jackson, Rashad Phillips and, from the women’s team, Cassandra Pack – as well as former stars from baseball (Pat Adams and Mike Pesci), cross country/track and field (Ken Dubois and Kim Jess), golf (Adam Walicki) and tennis (Maria Pandele).

Athletic Director Keri Gaither was appointed as the University of Detroit Mercy’s director of athletics in May of 2007. Soon after taking the helm of the department, Gaither announced the expansion of the Detroit Titans Division I sports program from 16 to 19 teams with the addition of men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s tennis. In her first year, Gaither also expanded the athletic staff by adding eight full-time positions to the department and directed the building and completion of a new $1.6 million all-purpose synthetic turf field and track. Gaither also led a successful fundraising campaign for the renovation of the men’s basketball office suite and oversaw the building of a new tennis complex that includes eight new courts and a tennis pavilion in addition to a new grass practice field for soccer and lacrosse. Recently Gaither was recognized for her strong leadership as UDM’s Director of Athletics when she was appointed to the University’s senior leadership team as a member of the Associate Vice President’s group in June of 2007. Gaither also chaired the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, which was played at Ford Field in Detroit, as the University of Detroit Mercy served as the host institution. As the committee’s Chair, Gaither provided strong leadership for the DLOC and maintained ultimate responsibility for the local operations of the Final Four event. Gaither held the same position, in addition to being designated Tournament Director, for the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional which broke all previous NCAA Regional attendance records with over 57,000 people each day at Ford Field. For the three years preceding her appointment as A.D., Gaither served as second in command for the Detroit Titans athletic department and also supervised nine Titan women’s varsity sports as the senior associate athletic director. During her tenure in that position, Gaither played an instrumental role in the planning and implementation of women’s golf in 2004 when it became UDM’s 16th varsity team. Prior to her selection as A.D., Gaither had served in several key administrative roles for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics including stints as senior woman administrator and director of business operations. As a current member of the Horizon League’s Executive Council, Gaither is actively involved with League operations. She has served on both the finance and television committees. She is also the council’s liaison to the track and cross country coaches and has served as the past liaison to the sports information directors.
While a member of the 2006 UDM Self-Study Steering Committee for NCAA Athletic Certification, Gaither also served on the Equity and Student-Athletic Welfare Sub-Committee and was designated the campus liaison during the certification process. Shortly after the University received its full certification in April of 2007, Gaither was asked by the NCAA to serve as a Peer-Review Team Member. Past University appointments include chairing UDM’s prioritization sub-committee and serving on various search committees. She is a past Board Member for the University of Detroit Mercy’s Women’s Studies Program and served on the Women’s Studies Program Development Sub-committee. Gaither participated as a member of the Tourism Action Group (TAG) Hospitality Committee, a group organized by the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau dedicated to training the hospitality industry for Detroit-area events such as the 2005 MLB All-Star Game and Super Bowl XL, as well as future events. In 2006, Gaither completed the NCAA’s inaugural Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Females, a leadership development program sponsored by the NCAA Office for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. The Leadership Institute, designed to address the critical shortage of senior-level minority administrators at NCAA member institutions and conference offices, prepares diverse leaders through a 12-month leadership training and skills development experience. Gaither served as a past steering committee member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium for Intercollegiate Athletics and recently assisted in coordinating its national leadership conference. Gaither is also a member of National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association. She currently serves on the NCAA’s the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee as well as the Executive Committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. In March of 2008, Gaither was presented with the Phenomenal Women’s Ashley Gray Legacy Award by the University of Detroit Mercy’s Student Programming Board. This award was presented for her outstanding contribution toward the growth and development of students as the director of athletics at UDM. Graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy, Gaither earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. During her undergraduate studies, she was a two-time recipient of the College of Liberal of Arts’ Economics Student of the Year Award. Gaither and her husband, Brad Trombley, reside in Pleasant Ridge with their two children, Elliott (19), a junior, who is also Detroit’s fencing team, and Kennedy (12).
