welc president's address Welcome to the first issue of the Probe for 2022! I’d like to thank Ethan and the rest of the 2021 UDSS committee for their wonderful efforts. This year we welcome another fantastic committee, to ensure students are being well

represented

and

are

provided

with

ample

opportunities

to

enjoy

themselves outside of dental school. This year will be challenging in many respects, particularly as we get updates to the COVID-19 SAR. It is important that we look out for ourselves and each other as we navigate the year’s ups and downs! Your hard-working year reps, Viren and Shivangi (DMD1), Carly and Liam (DMD2), Evan and Steven (DMD3) and Ebony and Bede (DMD4) are here if you ever have questions or concerns, so please get in touch with them if you need. Youssef and Selina organised the first event for the year, our annual ‘Intro to Dentistry’. The series of lectures on the different dental specialties gave the DMD1 and 2 students a taste of what they will learn over the next few years. I’m sure many are looking forward to the Journal Club events that will follow during the year. Our first social event, Prime and Bond, was a great success. It presented an opportunity for all years to get to know each other and enjoy not thinking about teeth for a change! Hats off to our social reps Belinda and Lilly for organising it. We also recently had our introduction event for the ADSA volunteering program Healthy Mouths Brighter Smiles, organised by Shi Han. I highly

recommend

those

who

are

interested

to

get

in

contact

and

help

contribute to this worthy cause! If I had an office, I would say that my door is always open. If there’s something you need to talk to me about, don’t hesitate to ask. Let’s make this year the best we can!

navigating

covid-19 COVID-19 has finally hit the west coast and it is something that has been stressing us DMD4’s, for one reason or another. While this stress has the potential to engulf us, it also has the potential to propel us into becoming resilient clinicians, if we decide to harness it the right way. Here are some hard truths and tips on how you can make the most of the rest of the year. In the past, if a patient cancelled or if we finished early, it was tempting to just leave and have a relaxing night off at the beach. That was when we had the luxury to do so. But now, as we are reaching the end of our course, we need to maximise every single minute we are at OHCWA. In this free time, go and observe the DCD students up on first floor (if they don’t mind), learn all the lab tricks from the amazing lab techs, assist DMD2 and 3’s and take the time to teach them along the way (testing your own memory), or pick the brains of the tutors who aren’t busy. If you see someone else struggling, offer up your time to help them get there too. We are at the stage where we need to take things into our own hands and push ourselves over the finish line – we will get there, if we work for it together.
