Welcome to the third instalment of Probe!
As the curtains start to draw on a magnificent 2022 year, we'd like to reflect on the wonderful things that have happened in the first half of Semester 2!
We all still have a big final push to get there, but the end is well and truly in sight!
Sarah Phang & Peter Nguyen⚠ It's time to BeReal! ⚠
In the midst of a stressful semester where the days and weeks have monotonously passed by, my BeReal memories serve as a gentle reminder of just how often I'm at OHCWA drilling teeth all day every day!
Hope you guys are doing more fun things in your 2 minute periods.
I also hope BeReal stays relevant for a little while otherwise this cover art might make no sense by the time the next Probe is released.
UWA Day
Explore UWA Day 2022 was held on Sunday 28 August. The Dental School set up its usual exciting stall to showcase the profession and our dentistry course.
The interactive hands-on activities were a simple way of demonstrating real life procedures. There was alginate mixing and moulding into shapes, light curing acrylic, composite fillings on frasaco teeth, and the Simodont Dental Trainer. We also shared our experiences with high school students and their families.
Thank you to Dr Alex Park for coordinating the event, and the staff and students for being great ambassadors to the school. Also, a welcome to Dr Manorika Ratnaweera for joining us this year.
Pauline Wong (DMD4)Quiz Night
On the 30th of September, we came together for the annual quiz night at Hollywood Subiaco Bowls Club. All the year levels came together to compete in rounds of trivia in categories such as geography, cuisines, pop culture and sports while munching on delicious food and enjoying drinks from the bar. The fun minigames between rounds were so much fun to play. We would like to thank everyone who got involved and hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as us. We would like to thank the sponsors of this event DPLA, BOQ, Aidec and ADAWA.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended our events of this year: Prime & Bond, GV Black Cocktail and lastly, Quiz Night. It's been a pleasure being your junior social reps of 2022!
Lilly Liu & Belinda Luu (Junior Social Reps, DMD3)sports report
Semester 2 has been one for the books, especially in terms of social sport!
Similar to semester 1, dentistry proved that they are a fierce competitor in sports including volleyball, netball and soccer. Our dentistry cohort fired up and took initiative to compete in these sports to their highest possible abilities. Everyone that competed should be very proud of themselves!
In terms of competitions, this semester we had the annual UDSS pool competition were we saw a fierce competition between students with many eager to take home to prize. However, there could only be one winner and a special mention goes to Bede van Schaijik (DMD4) for taking out the win this year.

education report
13th July 2022: Hospital Dentistry
For our third journal club, Dr Emma Turner zoomed in online from Melbourne to deliver a talk about Hospital Dentistry.
She is a recent dental graduate from UWA working at Monash Hospital with many interesting experiences to share.
She covered topics on dento alveolar emergencies, cardiac patients and dental oncology. She emphasised the importance of how time sensitive dental trauma can be so immediate treatment leads to better prognosis of the tooth and how we can manage dental emergencies in general practice to relieve the pressure on the Hospital for true emergency cases.
27th July 2022: All of Prosth
We were honoured to have Dr Janice Kan for our fourth and final journal club for the year. She was a former dental graduate from UWA, who now specialises in prosthodontics and is also the director of her practice; the Centre for Prosthodontics Australia Having a wealth of experience and knowledge, Dr Kan shared insights on a range of topics such as the consult process, the art and science of treatment planning, aesthetic assessment and design, as well as the management of worn dentition that student could implement in practice right away.
It was an amazing introduction to what could be a series of lectures, which students have already shown great interest in, so stay tuned for future updates.
Lastly, we would like to give our thanks again to all the guest speakers that have taken the time to share their wisdom and inspire students to continue to learn.
