Welcome Probe!

to

the

instalment

of

This semester has been another challenging one caused by none other than Miss Rona herself, so we would like to congratulate you all on getting through it like champions! We have tried to capture all the wonderful moments that have happened throughout the second half of semester 1, so sit back, relax and enjoy this read!

Sarah Phang & Peter Nguyen

Greetings! I hope you enjoyed the latest cover of Probe - "Dentomon: Magnificent Dentistry"! Even if you are unfamiliar with the highest-grossing media

franchise

worldwide,

I

hope

you

can

still

appreciate my expression of fun and creativity from my latest design work. Did you know the title is short for 'DMD'? If you look carefully, you might even find more little references hidden here and there! People

often

say

is

a

blend

of

art

and

science, and I agree. Almost every problem can have

Most importantly however, we should try to enjoy this profession! Injecting a bit of fun can always make the journey more gratifying. But enough from me - make a warm drink, find a comfortable seat, and indulge in the latest news from the UDSS community!

2022 WA

Scientific Meeting The RACDS WA Regional Scientific Day was held on Friday 10 June 2022 at the Pan Pacific Perth hotel. The event was kindly subsidised for the DMD4 students, so there was no cost to attend. It was a great opportunity to interact with the dental community and learn about topics not normally covered in the dental curriculum. It was also nice to see some recent UWA Dentistry graduates attend too. Again, accompanied by delicious food! The presenters were engaging and provided a wealth of practical information useful for our future careers. The event was followed by an annual general meeting which was optional for the DMD4 students to attend. Annual

Research Day

The UWA Dental School Annual Research Day was held on Friday 24 June 2022 at the McCusker Auditorium, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. There were 19 research projects presented by DMD4, 7 by the DClinDent, and 6 by the PhD students. The range of topics included Biomaterials & Nano-dentistry, Craniofacial Biology, Oral Medicine & Pathology, Periodontics & Oral Implantology, Paediatric Dentistry, and Endodontics. Following each presentation were some thoughtprovoking question & answer segments. We also had interesting and informative presentations by Prof. Romola Bucks, Winthrop Prof. Paul V. Abbott AO, Dr Robert Nedelcu, and Prof. Jukka P. Matinlinna. It was evident that the students and their supervisors had put in a great deal of time and effort into their projects – and what better way to showcase this than a Research Day served with delicious food? Unfortunately due to COVID-19, some students were unable to present in person but their contributions have not gone unnoticed. Sheer intellectual curiosity and the desire to obtain and disseminate new knowledge are core values in research. It is no doubt that the research this year (and for many years to come) will be a positive contribution to UWA Dental School and improve outcomes for the wider population. This is especially relevant given the continuing advancement of technologies and the ever-evolving nature of the dental profession. Thank you also to Dentsply Sirona, Admetec, Colgate, Southern Implants Australia, Byron Medical, GC Australasia Dental, Amalgadent, Henry Schein, Rely on Us, 3M, Straumann Group and W&H Australia. sports report This past semester has been a great one in terms of social sports! We started off the semester teams. Volleyball, netball teams. All teams had great sports and we can’t wait to brings for all these teams.

strong with four social sport and not one but two soccer triumphs in their respective see what the coming semester

In terms of competitions, the annual badminton competition which had UDSS face off with PMSS saw a fierce competition between the faculties with a large number of dent students eager to compete. However, dent unfortunately was unsuccessful this year. Of course we also cannot forget this year's table tennis tournament with a special mention given to this year's table tennis champion Michael Karam. Soon after this we had the long awaited ice skating event, which saw a number of dent students having a great night with some of the Canadian students in particular showcasing their skating talents on the ice! Finally, to round off the semester we had welfare day which had students beaming due to the large quantity of free snacks that were present in the common room. All in all this semester was full of fun filled events and we are excited for what the next semester brings in terms of social sports as well as the annual pool tournament!
