President for Research, Innovation and Extension office. It serves as a platform for showcasing research, extension activities, and innovations. This event is a valuable opportunity for

both

faculty

members

and

students to gain new knowledge and engage in learning.

The

second

annual

FIRES

conference

has

generated a lot of buzz among both students and faculty members. The program featured nine impressive presenters, including esteemed researchers,

extensionists,

and

innovative

leaders. Dr. Greta Gabinete's inspirational speech on the importance of maintaining a burning passion knowledge

and

unwavering

dedication

to

and innovation was a standout

moment. Notably, one of the conference's most exciting highlights was Dr. Souvenir Tachado's presentation on the crucial role of innovation and technology in the context of the COVID-19 vaccine. This year's FIRES promises cutting-edge research and innovative ideas.

TRAILBLAZERS The University President, Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, was thrilled by the researchers' unrelenting commitment to blazing new trails and making significant contributions to our country's cultural, social, and economic progress. He urged them to continue nurturing their passion for innovation and creativity as it will undoubtedly bring about a positive metamorphosis in our communities and the nation at large.

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Souvenir D. Tachado, a DOST Balik Scientist. The Balik Scientist Program (BSP) is an initiative of the Philippines to promote science and technology by inviting Filipino Scientists (or of Filipino descent) abroad to lend their expertise, knowledge and skills locally. Dr. Tachado is a medical doctor with extensive experience in conducting researches in virology, molecular biology, cell biology and immunology as demonstrated by his numerous publications in international peer-reviewed high-impact journals. He has received research grants from the US National Institutes of Health and has been teaching for 15 years at the East Carolina University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. As the founder and president of a biotechnology company, Souvie Biodelivery, LLC, he can share his expertise in strategic planning, technology development and product commercialization with the researchers of West Visayas State University.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Dr. Souvenir D. Tachado, a Balik Scientist of DOST, shared his insights on the vital role of innovation and technology in developing the COVID-19 vaccine. This groundbreaking discovery has the power to save countless lives, and Dr. Tachado believes that it is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of researchers. Despite the challenges they faced, he emphasized the importance of pushing boundaries and striving for excellence in all endeavors. Dr. Tachado's message to the researchers of WVSU was clear: remain steadfast in the pursuit of knowledge and progress. He encouraged them to keep their focus on their work knowing that every contribution is crucial in shaping and advancing the future through innovation and cutting-edge discoveries.
