UEDC ORIENTS NEWLY HIRED FACULTY ON EXTENSION FUNCTION

The University Extension and Development Center, in partnership with WVSU Janiuay Campus, hosted an extension orientation for the satellite campus ' newly hired faculty members on January 19, 2024 The event was attended by the campus directors of Research, Innovation, and Extension, as well as extension coordinators The goal of this gathering was to create a positive and enthusiastic environment for the successful implementation of extension projects in 2024 With everyone ' s combined effort and cooperation, we can anticipate a fruitful and productive year ahead.

JARO PARISH CANDLELIGHT PARTNERS WITH WVSU-COC FOR A JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

Jaro, Iloilo City- On January 20,2024, members of the Jaro Parish Candlelight conducted a Journalism Workshop facilitated by the WVSU-College of Communications held at La lsabelita Hall, Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral.

The participants were taught the basics of Feature Writing, the importance of the Hiligaynon language and how to use it properly, Photo Journalism and News Writing Such topics were discussed by Dr Ian Espada, Mr Raffy Galan, Ms Babelyn Cabalar, and Ms Lara Jeunesse Villaruel respectively who came from the Divisions of Journalism, DevCom, and Broadcasting

This workshop was conducted to enhance the skills of future writers and photojournalists that can benefit the Jaro Parish Candlelight.

THE FLAME IN FIRES 2024 REMAINS BLAZING!

The second annual FIRES conference has generated a lot of buzz among both students and faculty members. The program featured nine impressive presenters, including esteemed researchers, extensionists, and innovative leaders. Dr. Greta Gabinete's inspirational speech on the importance of maintaining a burning passion and unwavering dedication to knowledge and innovation was a standout moment. Notably, one of the conference's most exciting highlights was Dr. Souvenir Tachado's presentation on the crucial role of innovation and technology in the context of the COVID-19 vaccine This year ' s FIRES promises cuttingedge research and innovative ideas

TO ADVANCE WVSU GENDER MAINSTREAMING

WESVAARRDEC CONDUCTS TRAINING ON RESEARCH PROPOSAL WRITING FOR AANR SECTOR IN REGION 6

The WVSU-Gender and Development Center conducted a Training-Workshop on GAD Agenda and Gender Mainstreaming Assessment using the Gender Mainstreaming Evaluation Framework (GMEF) Tool on February 19-21, 2024 at the 4/F, Research and Extension Building I The activity centered on two main objectives: (1) Crafting and Implementing an Effective Gender and Development (GAD) Agenda and (2) Identification of Strategies and Action Points for Areas of Improvement The resource speakers were Dr Emily Dela Cruz of Iloilo Science and Technology UniversityGAD Center and Ms Josephine Khaleen Sasuman of CAO, Compliance and Monitoring Division and DOJ-Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

WESVAARRDEC continues to raise the bar in research and development for its 28 member agencies with the conduct of "Training on Writing Research Proposals" for the Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Sector in Western Visayas held on February 22-23, 2024 at Park Inn Radisson, Iloilo CIty. The training was facilitated by resource speakers Dr Victor Marco Emmanuel Ferriols and Dr. Geneveve P. Lachica

LEYTE NORMAL UNIVERSITY BENCHMARKS WVSU FOR UI GREEN METRIC UNIVERSITY RANKING

Faculty from Leyte Normal University visited West Visayas State University on February 23, 2024 for a benchmarking activity focusing on the UI Green Metric World University Ranking Dr Rommel L Verecio, Dr Las Johansen B. Caluza, and Jose Ismael Calamia presented their benchmarking inquiries on the following areas: (1) Setting and Infrastructure; (2) Energy and Climate Change; (3) Waste Management; (4) Water Management; (5) Transportation; and (6) Education and Research in Sustainability The benchmarking activity was facilitated by the Office of Quality Assurance headed by Director Elizabeth A. Magallanes.

WVSU COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CONDUCTS EXTENSION ORIENTATION

The College of Education (COE) initiated the conduct of an extension orientation for its faculty members on March 4, 2024 at the Center of Teaching Excellence, WVSU Main Campus Led by COE Dean Dr Lorey F Tanaleon, the activity aimed to bring clarity to the extension targets and deliverables expected of the college. Dr. Ricky P. Becodo, Director of University Extension and Development Center was tapped as resource speaker to discuss PREXC and strategic indicators as well as answer inquiries and issues related to the performance of extension activities of the college

COE is currently implementing the following extension projects: (1) 3Ps (Pagbulig, Pagbakod, Pag-uswag) Extension Project; (2) Project KAUPOD (Embracing Diversity in Strengthening) and (3) PAGKABALAKA sa mga Manunudlo, Kabataan kag Ginikanan

BPSU BeNCHMaRKS WVSU'S extension Services

The 17-man delegation of Bataan Peninsula State University- Extension and Training Services Office (BPSU- ETSO) visited University Extension and Development Center (UEDC) last March 13, 2024 to benchmark West Visayas State University’s extension services Dr Ricky P Becodo, UEDC Director welcomed the delegates during a benchmarking activity program held at the 4/F, Research & Extension Bldg I The UEDC presented its programs and services as well as best practices after which a lively open forum capped the activity

The delegates later paid a courtesy call to WVSU University President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz. Bataan Peninsula State University’s benchmarking activity aimed to address the university’s quality policy and to prepare for Commission on Higher Education SUC Levelling evaluation.

WESVAARRDEC JOINS ROOT CROPS FIESTA IN LEYTE

WESVAARDEC-West Visayas State University Base agency joined Visayas Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Program (VICARP), and Central Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (CVAARRDEC) in Baybay, Leyte for DOST-PCAARRDs Root Crops FIESTA (Farmers and Industry Encounters through Science and Technology Agenda) with the theme Sustainable and Effective Solutions for Climate Change, Urbanization, Research, Economic, and Development (SECURED)" Hosted by Visayas State University (VSU), the two-day event held last April 24-25, 2024 at VSU RDE Hall showcased root crops R&D technological outputs of Visayan cluster consortia member agencies

Technology generators, farmers, investors, entrepreneurs, students, and key officials of DOST-PCAARRD and regional consortia gathered to highlight the technological and commercial importance and potential of root crops through food product displays, root crop machine and process exhibits, plenary sessions, cooking demonstrations, and technology pitching Representatives from WESVARRDEC-WVSU Base Agency had a productive exchange of generated technology and knowledge with their counterparts from VICARP and CVAARRDEC Root Crops FIESTA is one of the initiatives of the Department of Science and Technolgy- Philippine Council for Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development in assisting regional R&D efforts in agriculture forestry and natural resources Through initiatives such as Root Crops FIESTA, farmers and technology adopters are actively encouraged to engage in sweet potato, yam and cassava farming as the economic future for these commodities are projected to have robust growth especially in Eastern Visayas

The University Extension and Development Center organized a Situational Analysis Training and Writeshop for faculty members The goal of the training was to provide them with the expertise and understanding necessary to perform meaningful research for extension programs Ms Rosario P Panganiban, a GAD Consultant, led a discussion on the utilization of GAD in situation analysis and provided tools for data collection. The training was wellreceived and demonstrated the faculty members' commitment to enhancing the community

Visayas cluster consortia holds root crops fiesta post evaluation and writeshop in Guimaras

Guimaras province played host to DOSTPCCAARRD's Root Crops Fiesta Post Evaluation and Writeshop on May 13-14, 2023 at Tely's Beach House in Buenavista, Guimaras. Participants from WESVAARDEC-West Visayas State University Base Agency, Visayas Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Program (VICARP), and Central Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (CVAARRDEC) gathered to assess the recently concluded Root Crops Fiesta held in Leyte as well as participate in a writeshop for publication production.

WVSU RECEIVES AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE FROM CHED ROVI

West Visayas State University was a recipientof several awards from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED ROVI) during the 3rd CHED Regional Quality Awards held on May 29, 2024 at the Urdaneta Hall of University of San Agustin The recognition activity is part of CHED's 30th anniversary and 4th Higher Education Day with the theme "Transformative and Resilient Philippine Higher Education "

The university received awards for excellence in community extension, research, internationalization initiatives, peace education as well as recognition for theprovision of supportto the CHED VI's endeavors and for being a model implementer of SIKAP.

Receiving the awards for WVSU were Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz (WVSU SUC President IV), Dr. Greta G. Gabinete (VP-RIE) and Dr. Ricky P. Becodo (Extension Director).

UEDC WRAPS UP SEMINARWORKSHOP SERIES ON SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

The University Extension and Development Center culminated its third and last seminar-workshop on situational analysis on June 19-21, 2024 at Smallville 21 Hotel. The trainings were held in three batches to accommodate faculty-extensionists coming from the University's colleges and satellite campuses. The training is part of the retooling process as WVSU shifts to becoming a research university that advances quality education towards societal transformation and global recognition.
