KTTBDC stresses importance of tracking WVSU's IP assets

As a recently created office mandated to protect WVSU's intellectual property assets for efficient management and utilization, the Knowledge Technology Transfer and Business Development Center headed by Dr Ariel Secondes spearheaded a 2-day WVSU Portfolio Audit and Inventory Workshop last July 25-26, 2024 to account existing intangible assets produced by faculty research and innovation This activity is an initial step towards creating a strong R&D environment in the university through effective IP management

SUC Fair 2024 celebrates eco-cultural heritage of Mindanao

The CHED-initiated SUC Fair 2024 took place at KCC Mall de Zamboanga from July 9-11, 2024, hosted by Western Mindanao State University under Dr Carla A Ochotorena The event celebrated the eco-cultural heritage of Mindanao with various competitions and activities, featuring a Mi Casita booth and bazaar showcasing regional product innovations During the opening ceremony, WVSU President Dr Joselito F Villaruz presented a coffee table book highlighting SUC Fair 2023. The fair concluded successfully for Western Visayas, with Rainer Cosas from Carlos Hilado Memorial State University winning the grand prize in the Pintar poster painting contest

Gawad Kalinga, SEED Philippines and partners launched the Visayas leg of the nationwide BayanAnihan Movement via a 3-day summit held on August 29-31, 2024 at West Visayas State University Cultural Center The term BayanAnihan stems from the words 'bayan' (country), 'bayani' (hero), 'ani' (harvest), and 'bayanihan" (solidarity with others) The summit featured plenary talks, world-class cultural shows courtesy of the College of PESCAR, break-out sessions and a countryside fair held at the College of Medicine Gym and mini-forest area The well-attended summit saw the active participation of students from WVSU CAF-Lambunao campus and other SUCs in Region 6 The event brought together government, NGOs, academe and the business sector to promote food security, sustainability, community empowerment and economic freedom by supporting young farmers and agripreneurs. CON and BFP conduct Kiddie Fire Square Roadshow

The CON CARES Project, in collaboration with the Bureau of Protection (BFP), recently conducted a noteworthy "Kiddie Fire Square Roadshow" at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City This event, which took place on July 27, 2024, was designed to educate children on the significance of fire safety

The program commenced with a cordial welcome from Dr Madonna S Palmes, followed by interactive learning sessions for 55 young participants Dr Albert C Apilado delivered an informative lecture on first aid, while Mr Jevan Ben N Roquios facilitated engaging discussions on fractures The Special Rescue Force and the Iloilo City Fire Station executed compelling disaster preparedness simulations and mock fire drills Furthermore, personnel from the BFP presented informative sessions on fire safety The event received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the attendees

WESVAARRDEC JOINS RSTW 2024 IN SIBALOM, ANTIQUE

The Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVARRDEC) participated in the Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week (RSTW) 2024, held from August 22-24 at the University of Antique in Sibalom, Antique Organized by the Department of Science and Technology Region 6, this annual event showcases research and innovation, with this year's theme focusing on science and technology as partners for a stable and prosperous future To engage and inspire the younger generation to pursue careers in research and innovation, the event featured activities such as techno tours, discussions with scientists, and competitions A key highlight was the launch of the Science and Technology (CEST) learning hub

The University Extension and Development Center held the Extension Project Termination and Presentation on September 13, 2024, organized by the Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation (PlaME) section. The event featured presentations of ten terminated projects, each showcased through a sevenminute video presentation. The projects were assessed by three evaluators: John Raffy F. Hilario, Febie Ibojos, and Dr. Aljen P. Vasquez. Among the presenters, the College of Nursing's "Rays of Hope" was recognized as the best extension project, with Professor Sheila Beliran honored as the best extensionist Overall, the activity proved to be both fruitful and productive, as the evaluators provided valuable insights to enhance the projects undertaken by the faculty extensionists This event marks the beginning of a continued effort to acknowledge the dedication and contributions of our faculty extensionists in their mission to assist the community, improve the lives of grassroots individuals, and create a positive impact on society

Faculty-extensionists learn how to create IEC for social media

The University Extension and Development Center conducted a Training-Workshop on IEC Production and Writing for Social Media last September 19-20, 2024 at the Research and Extension Bldg I, West Visayas State University. Twenty-eight faculty-extensionists from WVSU's colleges and campuses attended the said workshop facilitated by resource person Dr Ian C Espada of the College of Communication The training aimed to update the skill set of extensionists not just in developing and producing traditional IEC but also in creating engaging publication materials for social media use

The participants were oriented on the types and formats of IEC materials as well design concepts and principles The topic on writing and designing IEC materials for social media was also lengthily discussed As a culminating activity, the participants presented their expected outputs using graphic design platform Canva and mobile video editing app Capcut

Aprojectproposalwriteshopwasconductedbythe University Extension and Development Center on October 14-16, 2024 at Smallville 21 Hotel The 3-day writeshop for faculty-extensionists discussed topics essential in project proposal writing such as extension project title formulation project rationale; project objectives; gender and development component; project logical framework; project methodologyandworkplanformulation Alsoutilized during the writeshop was the HGDG (Harmonized Gender and Development Guidelines) as discussed byresourcespeakerMs RosarioPanganiban During the last day of the workshop, project sustainability was discussed as well as organizational chart and linkages, and project financial plans The writeshop concludedwiththefinalizationandsubmissionofthe extensionprojectproposals.

MasteringtheIMRADStructure forEffectiveScientificWriting

The University Extension and Development Center hosted a training workshop on IMRAD writingfromSeptember25to27,2024.Dr.Aris Larroder, a faculty member from the College of Arts and Sciences, facilitated the session, assistingfacultyextensionistsindraftingtheir papers, which will undergo three rounds of revisions. Following this, three reviewers Dr. Alexander Balsomo, Dr Mary Ann dela Vega, and Dr. Elias Olapane will assess the third draft.Therevisedproposalsgeneratedduring this workshop will be utilized in a technical review, where further evaluation will determine their implementation. While this rigorousprocessmaypresentchallenges,itis anticipated to have a substantial positive impactonthecommunity.

The 13th PASUC VI EMC Annual Regional Symposium and General Assembly (PEARS), held from November 5-7, 2024, was hosted by Aklan State University. The event's theme, "Sustaining Communities through Innovation: Advancing Extension Practices Across Sectors for Resilient and Inclusive Development," set the stage for a meaningful exchange of ideas. The WVSU College of Agriculture and Forestry's extension project presentation in the Agri-fishery, Food and Environment Cluster earned the First Runner Up award. The award-winning paper, "Progress through Economic, Socio-Cultural, and Agroforestry Cooperation Extension Program Upland Development Program (PEACE-UDP)," was authored by Dr. Joel A. Araquil, Sr., Dr. Eleodoro L. Alicante, and Jenard D. Tambong, and presented by Jenard D. Tambong, the Head of Campus Extension and Development at WVSU CAF. The event provided a platform to recognize outstanding achievements and collectively shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for communities across the region. The success of the WVSU College of Agriculture and Forestry's extension project presentation was a testament to the institution's dedication to innovation, community engagement, and the advancement of extension practices that make a real difference in people's lives.

FACULTY-EXTENSIONISTS REFINE PROJECT PROPOSALS FOLLOWING OCTOBER TECHNICAL REVIEW

The faculty-extensionists are revising their project proposals based on the feedback received during a recent technical review held last October 17-18, 2024. They are refining their objectives and methodologies to ensure the projects align with the evolving needs of the communities they serve. This collaborative effort aims to produce refined and impactful proposals that will secure funding and support for the successful implementation of the extension initiatives. The revision process reflects the facultyextensionists' commitment to excellence, community engagement, and delivering tangible and sustainable outcomes through their extension programs.

Dr. Becodo reelected as PASUC VI EMC Chair; officers take oath at NISU-Batad Campus

Batad, Iloilo The newly elected officers of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) VI Extension Managers’ Council (EMC) for the term 2025–2026 took their oath of office on November 25, 2024, at the Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) - Batad Campus

Dr Ricky P Becodo of West Visayas State University (WVSU) was reelected as Chairperson for another term, reflecting the trust and confidence of the region’s extension leaders in his leadership Joining him are Dr Adrienne D Veloso of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) as Vice Chair, Dr Joana Paula B Binas of Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) as Secretary, Prof Jocelyn S Legaspi of Capiz State University (CAPSU) as Treasurer, Dr Wilfredo H Muhat from the University of Antique (UA) as Business Manager, Dr Nenia N Bohulano of Aklan State University (ASU) as Auditor, and Dr Rene Jun B Belgica of NISU and Dr Margie Y Dela Cruz of Guimaras State University (GSU) as Public Relations Officers The Board of Directors includes Dr Roger Ray S Manzano of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), Dr Jimmy O Degillo of Central Philippines State University (CPSU), Dr Vanessa T Cayacay of Sibalom Northern Negros State University (SUNN), and Mr Paul S Magbanua of Philippine Normal University - Visayas (PNU-Visayas) Immediate Ex-Officio Officers are Dr Jeanette Bayona and Dr Marie Ann Raymaro

During Dr. Becodo's first term, the EMC successfully conducted research on the strengths, challenges, and areas for improvement in extension activities across Region VI. The council also focused on capacitating SUC faculty for third-party impact assessments and promoting researchbased extension projects through various capacity-building initiatives. These efforts have set a strong foundation for continued collaboration and innovation among SUCs in the region.

The PASUC VI EMC is committed to supporting each SUC in strengthening extension services through collaborative capacity-building programs, research, and symposiums aimed at enhancing the quality of extension delivery in Region VI

The oath-taking ceremony marks the beginning of a new term for the council, which continues to serve as a vital force in driving regional development through extension programs

27TH EXTENSION IN-HOUSE REVIEW CULMINATES WITH REVISION WRITESHOP

The second phase of the 27th Extension In-House Review, organized by the University Extension and Development Center, commenced on November 20, 2024, and concluded on November 22, 2024, with a focused Revision Writeshop.

During this phase, faculty-extensionists presented their extension proposals to a panel of evaluators. The review aimed to refine project activities and details, ensuring they were well-prepared for implementation in 2025.

The first part of the in-house review had been conducted on November 14-15, 2024, during which proposals were assessed by a panel consisting of Ms. Rosario P. Panganiban, Prof. Sheila P. Beliran, and Dr. Marlene S. Gloria. For the second phase, the evaluators included Dr. Aljen P. Vasquez, Dr. Julie Gay B. Quidato, and Dr. Marlene S. Gloria.

The two-part review reflected the university's commitment to rigorous project planning and evaluation, reinforcing the alignment of extension initiatives with the institution’s developmental goals.
