Pledge & Officer Messages I pledge to uphold the Objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind's potential.”

Hey there fam! I’m Danielle, your CKI Treasurer, and one of my favorite things about Circle K International is how our club has the flexibility to tailor our service project to needs of our community. If there is a project or an event we want to do, no matter how difficult it might be, we can turn it into a reality. This is all possible because of our hardworking service chairs (shout out to Fatimah and Jose!) and our dedicated members for volunteering with us. Every semester we always find new ways to give back to our community, and with our CKI family growing we have even more help to make this all possible. I just wanna say thank you to all our members that have served with us, I am excited to see how much more we can accomplish this semester and the next!

- Danielle

We’re nearing the middle of the Spring semester! I hope everyone is doing well in your classes and enjoyed the past events we’ve had in February. In this issue of The Paw Print, I have a recap on our February events and results of our 2019-2020 officer elections! There’s also a peak of what March will be like so keep on reading!

MEMBER

SPOTLIGHT February Member of the Month goes to Alyssa Tran. Alyssa joined our chapter last semester and has been one of our most active members since the beginning. From her smiles and laughs, she's been a friendly member of UH CKI and isn't afraid to talk to members of other CKI chapters. Her "out of this world" CKI spirit can be seen during the Southeast Texas Fall Rally where she dressed up as Reuben from Lilo & Stitch! She makes the effort to attend our chapter events and even divisional or district events! She went beyond by teaching other members who were not able to make it to the DCON Talent show dance rehearsals their part of routine. Despite having a group project meeting for a class on Committee Chair election day, she rearranged her schedule so that she could come in for a bit and present her speech. She is now the recently elected 2019-2020 Fellowship Chair! We look forward to working with her and strengthening our family bond.

Coming into college, I knew that one of the first things I wanted to do was join Circle K. During high school, Key Club was a big part of my life. Initially, I chose to run for an officer position in my Key Club for purely selfish reasons. However, my love for the club grew over time, and by the end of my first year as an active member, I realized that this club was something much more than just a resume booster. The friendships and everlasting memories that I made during our service projects, meetings, and district events were invaluable. For the first time ever, I truly had something that I felt passionate about. Naturally, I wanted to continue my Kiwanis streak in college, but I was afraid that Circle K would not meet my high expectations.

Alyssa Tran

I was so worried about being disappointed by this club that I almost did not want to give it a chance. When I finally built up the courage to attend a meeting, I realized that I worried for nothing. Circle K has met and surpassed my expectations. Although it is very different from the club that I was used to in high school, UH Circle K has allowed me to continue making more friendships and everlasting memories while satisfying my yearning for service. The members are all very accepting and welcoming. All the service and social events are planned with great care. Right off the bat, I was able to tell that the people in this organization are just as passionate as those that I met through Key Club. I am very excited to get more involved in future semesters and see what more CKI has to offer me. Although I have not been able to be as active as I would like to, I hope that I will someday be able to give back to this club and watch it grow further. 4

FEBRUARY RECAP Mini Cougar Einstein Our Chapter invited Rodriguez Elementary students to attend a STEM field trip filled with workshops for the whole day. UH CKI taught physics, then students used toothpicks and marshmallows to build the tallest structure without falling down. We collaborated with 2 other University of Houston organizations, Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) and teachHouston. SASE led a catapult workshop where students made their own catapult from wooden sticks, and held a mini contest to see who can shoot cotton balls the farthest. teachHouston led a zipline design workshop where students were challenged to use as little materials as they can to carry a small object from one end to another. We also led a small tour of our campus, showcasing points of interest our campus has to offer. We would like to thank our student volunteers and Rodriguez Elementary for making this a successful event. We were able to inspire children to learn more about STEM while at the same time have fun.

The event was so much fun and definitely one of my favorite volunteering events I've ever done. We did workshops with the kids and to see their excitement while they were doing it made my day. It reminded me when I was a kid where I would be entertained by building towers with marshmallows (To be fair, that would still entertain me). It was also nice to hear all of the kids' different interests and stories. I had a great experience and I'm sure the kids had fun as well. I would definitely love to make this event a yearly thing, as I would definitely volunteer for it every year!

DISTRICT events SPRING RALLY

On February 9th, different Circle K chapters from the Southeast Texas Division met at Stephen F. Austin State University for Spring Rally. CKI members were given the opportunity to network and talk to members from other CKI chapters during lunch. Once everyone arrived at SFA, everyone participated in a game of matching baby pictures to their respective owners. Each chapter also had the opportunity to share their strategies and ideas on topics such as recruitment and membership development. Each chapter also brought one pair of jeans and were given time to decorate it for Destination Empowerment. The jeans were then kept until DCON where they would be auctioned off to raise funds for the Governor’s project. Spring Rally is also where members of CKI can run for the Southeast Texas Division’s Lieutenant Governor position. Our 2018-2019 service chair, Jose Leyva, presented his speech and was elected to be our 20192020 Southeast Texas LTG for Texas-Oklahoma! Congratulations Jose! We hope everyone had a blast at Spring Rally!
